- The PLAN (People's Liberation Army Navy) Type 054A frigate is a class of multi-role frigates that serve as key surface combatants in the Chinese Navy. They are designed to fulfill a variety of maritime duties, including anti-ship, anti-submarine, and air defense missions. Here's a technical overview of the Type 054A frigate:
General Characteristics
Displacement: Approximately 4,000 tons full load.
Length: About 134 meters (440 feet).
Beam: 16 meters (52 feet).
Draft: Approximately 5 meters (16 feet).
Speed: Capable of reaching speeds up to 27 knots (50 km/h; 31 mph).
Range: Able to operate at a range of about 8,000 nautical miles (15,000 km; 9,200 mi) at 18 knots (33 km/h; 21 mph).
Crew: Accommodations for 165-190 personnel.
Propulsion
The Type 054A is powered by a Combined Diesel And Diesel (CODAD) arrangement, featuring four SEMT Pielstick diesel engines that drive two shafts, providing a balanced mix of speed and endurance.
Armament
Main Gun: A single 76mm gun mounted on the foredeck, capable of engaging surface, air, and shore targets.
Anti-Ship Missiles: Equipped with 8x C-803 anti-ship cruise missiles.
Air Defense: Features a 32-cell vertical launching system (VLS) that can launch the HQ-16 medium-range surface-to-air missile.
Anti-Submarine Warfare: Armed with 6x torpedo tubes and 2x triple 324mm anti-submarine warfare torpedo launchers. Additionally, it can deploy anti-submarine rockets and has a flight deck and hangar to accommodate a medium-sized helicopter, enhancing its ASW capabilities.
Close-In Weapon System (CIWS): For point defense against incoming threats, it is equipped with at least one Type 730 CIWS and may also include decoy/chaff launchers for soft-kill defense.
Electronics and Sensors
Radar: The Type 054A is fitted with an advanced phased array radar system for air search, surface search, and fire control. This includes the Type 382 Radar (air search 3D phased array radar) and other multifunctional radars.
Sonar: Equipped with bow-mounted and towed array sonar systems for anti-submarine warfare.
Electronic Warfare: Features a comprehensive electronic warfare suite, including jammers and decoy launchers to enhance survivability against missile attacks.
Aviation Facilities
The frigate includes a stern flight deck and hangar capable of accommodating a single medium-lift helicopter, primarily used for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and search and rescue (SAR) missions.
Operational Role
The Type 054A frigates are integral to the PLAN's modernization efforts, providing a capable platform for defending China's maritime interests and enhancing its blue-water navy aspirations. Their versatility allows them to be deployed in a wide range of naval operations, from peacetime presence missions to high-intensity conflicts.

I work on subsea cables, We took a few synchronized cuts last week on 3 separate segments in the red sea around the hanish
islands. some shenanigans are afoot
@@ts757arse Maybe. It wasn't a straight cut, just a few bursts of FEC errors on the data signal and then it settled down a bit after while.
If it was from the anchor I would have expected the cables to go down one at a time, but these were synchronized pretty well. Its almost like something was screwing with the repeaters on multiple cables at once.
Though to be honest I dont know for sure
No bro, Chinese didn't do it and Americans are paranoid
A little correction: the missile "Eagle Strike" doesn't get its name from "being designed to hit USA planes". All the Chinese missiles get their name from Chinese peoms, this one particular was from a poem written by Mao.
是的,鹰击长空
The name just seems too fitting for that purpose so i can see why this oversight would be made lol
Very nice brief. But just a couple of corrections:
1. There are 40 Type 054A commissioned as of December 2023, not 30.
2. Yu-8 (incorrectly referred as CY-5) is the VLS launched ASROC, while Yu-11 is a different ASROC for angled launchers.
3. Mineral E may be able to track 30 targets, but the 4x AJK-16 fire control radars are only able to provide guidance for up to a total of 8 HHQ-16s. This was only improved from 31st hull onwards when they switched to a new phased array FCR.
4. The ASW depth charge launchers are actually not stationary. They can rotate as shown in some videos.
Thank you.
Not really sure how he messed up the thing with the depth charges
This is a very handy ship. Not many Navies can boast a 32 cell VLS on their runabouts.
All four Pakistani Type-054A/P frigates are in service...China certainly financed the deal on credit, but the important thing is they're all operational.
Didn't they buy 8 with 4 to be built in China and another 4 built in Pakistan under license?
@@Jkl62200 that's a submarine deal you're talking about

Thanks for the informative video, Aaron.
Very detailed brief. I know speed isn't everything but US ships were doing over 30 knots way back in WW2.
But the DEs in WW2 can not do over 30 knots in WW2, and Oliver-Perry class can't either
In the naval gun era, a few knots greater speed meant being able to engage and disengage at will, cross the enemy's T and soforth. A lot like in air combat. Today in the missile age, 30 knots is more just an international standard. But it's slipping. Most amphibs including US big decks do more like 20-25 knots.
Old River class DE's can do 32 flat out. Nearly boiler popping.@@banerda2334
I love these briefs. I stick to land but love the info.
5:56 All 4 were delivered in 2022 and the question of not being able to afford these hulls is very misinformed. We are currently constructing 8 type 039 B class subs for 4-5 billion dollars. If we couldn't afford these subs, then the 4 054A hulls would be out of the question.
We can't afford..... It's Chinese generous Chinese loan facilities which helps us afford these major platforms. Thanks to our luck every ship operational in our Navy serves Chinese interests
We got the LCS because the Navy was influenced by the US Chairforce (not to be confused with the USAF). You know, the same guys that designed the M-2 Bradley and wanted to refit the Iowa class battleships into ICBM platforms. The brighter ideas people that occasionally escape from the dungeons of DARPA.
6:30 I watched enough Chinese independent media outlets talking about this ship, never have I heard anyone say this 054A can do more than 30 knots… The top speed being a big problem with this ship is common knowledge… Not sure if it’s the 054B that can managed a top speed of over 30 knots.

Very well presented! Much appreciate your time making these briefs!
When are you going to discuss the 054B? I heard there are great deal of upgrades than 054A.
And more expensive. It won't replace 054A as 12 more 054A ordered.

30 knots is required to keep up with carriers. You don't need 30 knots if you don't have carrier, see most European diesel powered frigates.
But it does mean these Chinese frigates can't escorts their carrier, but that's the job for their destroyers.
Perhaps their frigates will do the job of the LCS?
@@danielch6662 frigates are generally ASW vessels with other support work
@@danielch6662 They would be closer to OHP than LCS. These 054A have no land attack capabilities or means to deal with swamp attack by small boats.
OTOH they have very good AAW and decent ASW capabilities for a sub-5000 tons frigate, which is good for picketing duties.
With nuclear carriers maybe, Diesel carriers can't sustain those speeds.
It doesn't make sense for china to build fast frigates if their carrier groups will never actually travel that fast outside of an emergency.
@@hughmungus2760 Not true, carrier needs to be fast to generate headwind for launching aircraft. Even more so if you don't have catapults. Even a WW2 era Essex class does 30+knots.
Needless to say it's a bad idea to outrun all of your escorts whenever you need to launch aircraft.
The Kuznetzov class are steam turbine ships with similar displacement and installed power as an Iowa, so likely also a 30+ knot ship.
I hope you can introduce 052D/DM/DL. 055/055A. 039B. 075 Attack Ship. There is also the newly launched 3000 ton class stealth frigate.
The newly launched stealth frigate, 054B, is 6000 ton class, and is the direct successor to the 054A mentioned in the video.

If you're that easily offended, take it up with NATO as that's the official designation for them. He's just reporting that
But what if an Asian comes up with the name? Is it still Wong?
Always interesting.
19:30 the question is how many rounds are loaded in weapon, doubt 10000. Probably more like 1000-2000. Much like CIWS, they don't have a minute of ammo, 10000 will give you half the time to shoot it down. Time to target probably same, so you are wasting twice the rounds.
Smooth is fast, fast is slow.
ADS is great for a navy that is expanding while designing future ships. While waiting for a full capable CVN which create a larger AA umbrella, ADS mix with conventional DDG is the way.
It can be either DDG or FFG depending on where the Fleet operate.
For a small Navy 2 ADS 2 FFG 1 DDG 2 SSK can control up to 300 Nautical Miles of water. If supported by for example we have FA 18 D and SU 30 MKM the ranges is extended with CAP or ASM can be done by the air force before the navy take over.
CVN is great when you are playing in a vast ocean which enable the group to hide from any hunting fleets.
Yet within 500 NM well the air force umbrella is sufficient. With or Without Land Anti Ship Missile.
If place within like 20 to 30 NM to mainland those fleet can have an additional Medium and Long Range Land Based SAM which can be replanish faster than ships SAM.
Smart concept indeed
Right on great video
I believe Australia invented the rocket assisted torpedo, after several beers and a play in the bathtub. We called it the Ikara. The US offered us vast sums of money plus a couple of destroyers for the rights to make it. The ALWAYS very wise Australian government said "No, we would like to keep it to ourselves, thanks. We will build them and sell them to you."
The Americans shook their heads in amazement at the very wise politician's choice and decided to make their own version, which they called ASROC.
So, not only did the Yanks pinch the design but we also missed out on a LOT of goodies.
Anyway, that's what I was told as an RAN tech and I'm sticking to it.
You forgot the H/SJG-206 towed array sonar
They also send the 7.5K ton type 52D 'aegis-class' destroyers regularly to Djibouti.
Thanks from Germany! BTW: you guys know a secure online meeting service? I'm asking for a friend. :)
For that motor to make 28,200 hp @1050rpm that's 141,000ft/lb of torque @1050rpm. Wowza.
1 every 2 weeks... Dam! That's a high pace during peacetime, imagine during wartime when they are really cracking the whip.
This is 054A primary AWS not air defense. New version 054B first two ships were launched a few months ago with higher speed, new radar and similar weapon as a low cost AWS in carrier group. Older 054 were all converted to coast guard.
You may also want to check out an experimental corvette China launched recently, pretty secretary, not a lot of info available.
Good stuff bud 👍
Pakistan's Ministry of Defence (MoD) ordered four frigates - two in 2017 and an additional two in 2018, as part of the Pakistan Navy's collective efforts to augment its capabilities in naval warfare.[12][13] All four ships of the class have been commissioned. The first two, Tughril and Taimur, were commissioned in January and June 2022, respectively while the last two, Tippu Sultan and Shah Jahan were commissioned in May 2023.
@SubBrief @24:00 you showed the "Type 54B / Type 57" and showed the new ship to be a lot larger physically, but said that it was based on the same hull, so for future reference please either make a note of this, or use a different picture as this picture shows that the new ship is not just longer, but also wider, so not the same hull, and everything else that is common between these two ships shows that the Type 54B / 57 simply has this ship being shown larger rather than a serious upgrade to the hull, the ASCM, VLS missile sizes, larger calibre gun etc.
The ASW mortar is an upgraded version of the "Hedgehog" from WW2. It was very effective against German U-boats, but I would think modern subs would run too deep and too fast.
I guess nowadays it's for torpedo defense?
It’s called eagle strike not strike eagle. Doubt it’s named for the U.S.
It's named after a Chinese idiom. I believe it is just a nice coincidence when translated to English.
鹰击长空
Many countries have eagles not just America. lol
The hedge hog was the primary yboat hunting weapon during WW2
Type 54Bs have already replaced the 54As in the production queue.
These are in fact generally used in the anti sub role within SAGs.
I think the 054A frigate can reach a speed of 30 knots. If it cannot reach a speed of 30 knots, how can it follow the aircraft carrier for long-distance combat? In previous exercises in China, the aircraft carrier formation was equipped with 054A
Just because they want it to do something that requires better capabilities doesn't mean it magically has those capabilities. If it is keeping up with the Chinese carrier, then the carrier is not doing over 27kts. Warships extremely rarely, even in wartime, dash around at top speed. You may well have seen video or source material indicating the carrier has a 54A escort, but that doesn't automatically mean the frigate can match the carrier's top speed.
US Navy regularly runs at high speeds.
Aircraft Carrier, Carl Vinson, can do close to 50knts. DE Could do 32 flat stick, definitely can't keep up.
If the Carrier is going to have a functional Res/Des it needs to slow down.😁😁 @@mikearmstrong8483
How are these things so light? At 4000 tons they're anywhere from two to three thousand tons lighter than comparable surface combatants like the JMSDF's 1990s Mursame class DD (~6000 tons full), modern Asahi class DD (~6800 tons full) and our upcoming Constellation at ~7300 tons. Do they just have paper for armor? What's the deal?
@@Tsarbomb117 You are comparing Japanese destroyers with Chinese frigates, so of course destroyers would weigh more; Chinese 052D also weighs 7000 tons. Regarding the Constellation class, the US designs heavier ships because of the need for endurance to travel long distances. Examples would be Arleigh Burkes being at 10,000 tons and Zumwalt being 15,000 tons (Still called a destroyer btw). Plus, different countries designate their ships differently, so you can't always compare tonnages, but rather their mission goals and equipments. Also, modern ships don't really have armor other than maybe at vital places like the engine and missiles compartment.
054B is addressing the short comings of alpha variant plus now has supersonic Yj-12 which has greater range but few number not sure why perhaps heavy weight donot allowed 2x4 launcher
"Eagle Strike" means the eagle strikes. The missile itself is the eagle.
Great vid! Is the 5-inch gun on a Frigate an advantage? Like the Anzac, Hunter, or old Knox Frigates? Cheers
Maybe the USA can copy these ships and have S Korea or Japan build them for us?
Also Yu-7 are being replaced by Yu-11 torpedos
had no idea they named a ship after their arch nemesis, chiang kai shek, leader of the KMT that was later defeated and founded Taiwan.
Will you be doing a brief for the Type 054B when sufficient info comes out about it?
Hey Sub Brief, been a long time viewer of yours(since 2020). Could you possibly do a video explaining what dry docking and what repairs look like? I know it can be lengthy process but not sure what that all entails, thanks!
Thanks for the brief, I think the Russians use RBU hoping to break guidance wires of wire guided torpedoes, it's appears doubtful to be able to hit incoming torpedo with such an unguided weapon unless if it's running in the opposite direction in a straight line and the torpedo is trying to chase it down.
Constellation would be a great platform, probably a benchmark for others for decades though.
I think we bought the LCS's due to lobbying/and shady used car salesmanship (which overpromised with no hope of really delivering) by the big MIC's
I haven't followed the LCS's. But wouldn't be surprised if it played out like the Bradley in the Pentagon Wars book.
27 knots (in "normal displacement") is not bad for a all diesel propulsion (CODAD) ship. You would see the same number in all the convinced Chinese information sources.
Its going to be bad i a war starts with them. 2 yrs.... hmm. How long does it take to make a arleigh burke class? Or other ships. 7-9 yrs? How many a month can they make? What i am concerned about is we look more like Germany ww2 with fewer highly advanced pieces of equipment and china looks more like the us in 39 with a booming industry.
US, UK, Australia, Japan, Korea. Later, if necessary, France, Germany, etc. The Japanese had a bigger navy too, after Pearl Harbor, but they didn't have the edge. Bottom line I just would not mess with the USN and USAF who have entirely pivoted toward the Pacific.
UK doesn't have a military to speak of of maybe at best 50k. Japan isn't much better with a ground force of 150k with 46k reserve. Australia 57k. Buying boats from the US if I recall correctly. I think ohio class but don't quote me.. Germany and France both more worried about Russia.
@@christophermorris6386Australia is buying a version of the type 26 with more VLS from the UK, built in Australia. .. eventually
@christophermorris6386 I am not expecting troops from UK, France or Germany. What I do expect is ships and planes from South Korea, Japan, and Australia.
The US and China cannot fight each other directly. Just like NATO and Russia cannot fight each other directly. What you are talking about is highly hypothetical
And the Constellation is already delayed… smdh.
that's usual timeline in u.s MIC.... delay then over budget then more delays and huge over budget..... j

Very fast indeed, and when ccp have a plan on something, it usually achieved the targeted objectives within time frame.
It is a challenge but recruitment has been in overdrive for a number of years now. They try to target STEM graduates which makes it even harder.

23:15 The Z-9C has a Thales HS12 sonar because it is a licensed copy of the Eurocopter AS565. It dates back to when before the US became anti-China. Yes, I know, it's hard to believe today. But the older folks here (who don't suffer from long term memory loss, perhaps because of covid) will remember a time when China was America's friend. Not it's bff. Not an ally. But it was friendly. Back before the US had the oh-s***** moment when it suddenly realized that China's economy was going to grow and grow, and they're not going to stop and be satisfied with staying behind the US, because friends don't overtake friends. 😁 But that was obviously insane, because China had a population 5x larger than the US, and for them to stay behind the US would mean that their population would be permanently doomed to earning less than 20% of the average American. The trouble was not that China was hell bent on overtaking the US. It was because the US was growing too slowly, and China came up from behind and bumped up against the US. It's like when you're driving at 200mph on a 90mph highway, and then there's this guy in front of you going 90mph who wouldn't let you pass because he wants you to follow the speed limit. 😁

I read somewhere an improved Type 54B is already work in progress... How does this compare with the latest Arleigh Burke Class III? Most people don't know the forte of the Arleigh Burke Class is air-defense/attack originally designed to protect US aircraft carriers while those of the PLAN's is anti-ship defense/attack. Recently both the USN and now PLAN are moving in the opposite direction with PLAN improving its air-defense/attack systems while the USN its anti-ship attack/defense system....
The way I see it, a war in the South China Sea favors the PLAN while in the vast oceans of the world, USN. But in the long run the trend definitely favors the PLAN. Both countries have the technologies and resources to compete but the Chinese are much more efficient than the American, meaning its MIC. American MIC is profit orientated while the Chinese national interest....
Type-054b is a frigate. The type-052D is more comparable to an Alright Burke, albeit it still lags behind.
"Chinese presence dissuades pirates" While I am not expert, I am pretty sure they don't help others. At best pirates visibly see a Chinese warship and go the other way, which is something like a 5% assist while they motor around. In comparison Chinese warships will regularly escort groups of fishing vessels as they go about obliterating whatever aquatic life they find in somebody else's fishery.

1.The idea of hide weapons under the deck was first came up by Soviet Union on Kirov class, not US or "NaTo".
2.The "two years" time period is from "launched(into the water)" to "commissioned(in the navy)", which has nothing to do with building the hull or whatever he mentioned.
Im kind surprise u dont even know the difference since u claim yourself as a submarine veteran.
Whats more is that the Zhou Shan hull number is 529 so the pic there is also wrong.
3.About the top speed I believe he is right, thats a big flaw of 054A. And that is why the PLAN is building and have already launched a 054B.
4.Yu8 and Yu11 is not same thing. Yu8 is a rocket assist torpedo with Yu7 warhead. Yu11 was first seen in 2016, and first 054a was launched in 2008, hence Yu11 wont be there on 054a.
5.The range of HHQ16 can be diff from 40/50/70km based on what variant(HHQ16A/B/C) they are, there is also a latest variant HHQ16F with 100+km but im not sure if that variant can fit on 054a.
6.Z-9 is a license-produced Eurocopter SA365/AS365 Dauphin. At the same time they introduced the Aérospatiale SA 321 Super Frelon as well, which known as z-8.
How is China going to keep all these ships they are building serviced properly? This is a problem all other navies are having, the lack of port facilities to service their current ships. Is China building a massive amount of dry docks to cope or are these effectively one shot ships designed simply to do a mission then replace them with the next load of ships coming down the ramp. I just don't see this massive fleet building programme being sustainable.
One of Chinese ship yards are as big as seven American ship yards.

This is a good ship for it's performance, a balance between price and performance and has enough endurance for long voyage. I imagine this ship is fully capable of data link with the 052 and 055 series.
On what do you base your supposition that this frigate can data link with China's newer destroyers?
Because they have this technology for decades and it be really stupid if they didn't use it.
So that's what they mean by "slow boat to China."
How many toilets does the type 054A have ?
“…this torpedo will never hit an American submarine…”. That’s true since the frigate will not have a chance to fire it as it sinks to the bottom after a precision coalition strike.
Pakistan pays for everything it buys so that’s a freaking low thing to say anyway. All procurements are made within available budget by MODP and defense assets are paid for by soft loans. So do mind what you say to your audience specially things you don’t have knowledge about.
No countries included NATO wants to spend more & more on Weapons but have no choice if threat from others perceived. IN provoked more defense spending by PK when it acquired more such as the Rafaels. All three IN, PK & CN need to resolve all of their differences or disputes so more can be spent on economic development instead. CN has the US' threat thus it had no choice but to match as close as it can to US'. Try not to spend on weapons from other countries as such sucks out funds from your economy.
US Navy has no frigate. They are small. Any navies with sufficient budget would use destroyers instead.
I’m wondering if the mission here is to gather intel on how Taiwan or other nations could use the same tactics as the Houthis against PRC shipping?
China is probably thinking the same and learning from the houthis. Taiwan is suicidal if it thinks about declaring war with China.
I'm sad..... No deep intel ?
Unreliable & not battle trsted, made of mild steel. Cannot stand & depend itself on first strike. Purely for showroom
Pajeets in comments are seething 🤣
I lived the life for over twenty years. The only metric that matters is the crew. Do they do their job to the best of their ability, or do they complain about the taste of the food or about being told what to do by a white guy?
Factomundo
the west struggles to recruit people to join.... so what crew?
Aaron, appreciate the hard work on this, but right now I'm more worried about Russia/NATO. Putin appears to be approaching section 8 if not already there. And the crazy MAGA's siding with Putin is also insane.
NATO and US has no business in a former soviet republic. If Russians were on our border (oh wait, it was called the cuban missile crisis) and no superpower allows that given the potential of nuclear missiles 5 minutes away from their capital. US should never have overthrown the Yanokovich presidency in 2014, if we believe in democracy how come we keep overthrowing them?
@@magnaviator That former Soviet republic is an independent sovereign country that received security guarantees from the sigantories of the Budapest Memorandum to assist in the event of aggression fron a foreign country. Foreign aggression JUST as the Russian invasion. If anyone has no buisness of being there, it's Russia.
@@magnaviator "US should never have overthrown the Yanokovich presidency in 2014"
I agree. Good thing it _didn't_ .
Sarge you mean article 5 section 8 is housing assistance. I think you reading your mail.
No one is siding with Putin you loon. If MAGA were siding with Putin, they'd switch their votes to Biden, because that's who Putin wants, in his own words. Putin may be an evil man, but he isn't stupid, he wants the weakest US President possible to be sitting in the Oval Office.
Nice fishing boat
Made of Tofu
keep thinking that way
is your iPhone also made of Tofu?

These Chinese & Pakistani frigates will be facing TALWAR CLASS frigates of Indian navy......And next generation models of these Chinese frigates will face Indian navy's NILGIRI CLASS frigates in future......In both cases Indian navy has upper hand in Armaments and systems.
Lol relax buddy if anything we know about india and weapons is the Arjun and Tejas 😂
so 6x Talwar vs 30+x 54A..... superpower india again?
Average Indian with least nationalism be like:
@@fatdoi003 Those 30 should be able to reach Indian ocean first 😂
Indian navy standing strong in Andaman and Nicobar Ireland controlling strait of Malacca......learn some geography first.
@@whiteshark450 Yeah.....keep thinking that way😂
Meanwhile India operating Nuclear submarines, Anti ballistic missile defence system, Hypersonic missiles and many more.
Believe me ARJUN is way more better than cheap Chinese copycat tanks which India going to face😜
Tejas has achieved milestone of 10000 Hours of accidents free flights, does any other jet achieved that? Definitely not the cheap Chinese JF17 😂😂😂
054 is too weak. Indian warships are much stronger. People all over the world are envious of them.
absolutely... their toilets are splendid
China's navy has better quality and quantity of vessels than India does. India's progress on building a top tier indigenous military industry has been very slow.
You forgot the H/SJG-206 towed array sonar
