I'm pretty sure we use a couple other bugs in different dyes too. As long as they aren't toxic and have almost no health risks, then it's fine. There's other more pressing things in our food to consider, bug extract dyes are the least of concerns.

Quick note, because I've seen cochineal refered to as "parasitic" multiple times on shorts. Insects that feed on the juices of plants, like this insect, are NOT parasitic. They are herbivores. Calling them parasitic gives the idea that that they are dangerous to people or animals.

I eat these fairly regularly, yes, but not everyone in the audience will. My aunt is vegetarian, and so she checks ingredients labels and doesn't buy ones with carmine. I'm pretty sure we use a couple other bugs in different dyes too. As long as they aren't toxic and have almost no health risks, then it's fine. There's other more pressing things in our food to consider, bug extract dyes are the least of concerns.

I eat these fairly regularly, yes, but not everyone in the audience will. My aunt is vegetarian, and so she checks ingredients labels and doesn't buy ones with carmine. Maybe there are vegetarians for whom something like this doesn't count, but I'm also sure that my aunt isn't alone in that.
Also, even for me, it's hardly every day. Like, today I had blueberry yoghurt, grapes, banana bread, a meat pie, a croissant, lasagne, broccoli, and a chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Some of that had beef, I'm sure some of it had other bugs, but none of it had carmine.

I feel it's a bit misleading to call it a 'parasitic' insect. Scales feed on plants. Some scientists have compared them to ectoparasites, and yes Wikipedia calls cochineal a "sessile parasite," but they are not so different from other plant pests like aphids, and we usually don't call plant-feeding things parasites.

Not really, since a parasite is something that sucks out and steals nutrients(Generally the case). There are plants that parasitize other plants as well. Technically, aphids and scale insects are like the lice and ticks (I know those are in the arachnid family) of animals but for plants. Copying from a source that I found down below.
