It was merely about being able to do better than one's ancestors if one chose to do so. The idea of expanding it to owning a house or car or business or being a 'stay-at-home-mom' or retiring at 35, etc are expansions depending on the time frame.
Post-WW2, the government pushed home ownership. They pushed black home ownership in 1990-2008. Influencers pushed early retirement very recently.
Basically the motto has been co-opted by people trying to sell us things. "58-inch screen TV! It's the American dream."

Red Lobster should have shut down years ago. That "Endless Shrimp" is Chinese farmed nasty antibiotic filled shrimp. They helped put American shrimping/fishing industry out of business. China sells that crap for almost nothing because it's horrid. Coming from a Florida shrimping/fishing family I hate Red Lobster! Close 'em all down.

It's taken out of your w-2 paystub automatically. 6.2%. Your employer also pays another 6.2%.
The government doesn't trust you, so they ask companies to withhold that money from you, so you can't use it for debt and pay the government later. If companies fail, the irs hammers them.
Remember, taxes are the prerequisite of any transaction. Not the result. If the taxes can't be paid, you can't have the thing. Even if the thing is your money.

I worked at Red Lobster as a busboy at 15 years old. That was my first real job. This was in the 80s. America was a completely different place then. People actually cared for each other and worked hard to provide for their families and loved their communities. MTV was the channel and Remote Control was the game show along with Headbangers Ball, Dial MTV, and music videos that were brand new. Crazy what America has become.

As the comptroller and cashier of a bank the tracking of expenses was paramount and when we built a Branch bank a complete folder of contractors and miscellaneous expenses going into the construction and readiness for operation had to be maintained. When he had Cuomo on his show for the first time I was very disappointed with the responses PBD gave to him, he did not do a very good job at questioning Cuomo’s answers. Extremely disappointing. He allowed Cuomo to smooth talk and bs his way out of all his hypocritical actions and statements. I love PBD, he’s a massive force for good but he dropped the ball on this one.

In my small town in iowa my teenage son walks around town with friends, they hang out at the local park, they walk the trails in the woods. It was that way when I was his age. I just did it even more cause I didn't have as many options as he does today for stuff to do.

Buying local can be done with some advanced planning, just in the past year my wife and I bought a whole cow from a local farm - meat for a year. We get our poultry and butter from the Dutch Amish the next town over, our eggs from a local homesteader, and we started a vegetable garden with seeds and plants from a local nursery. This of course was more time and labor intensive than just going to the grocery store but the quality of the food is light years beyond the chain grocers and we’re slowly integrating into the local eco system. It’s all about priorities!
