Play with them, cuddle with them, get them a new nook to hide in, find toys they love. For humans, the answer is actually therapy. People that are obese often have mental illnesses or disordered eating (because healthy people can't tolerate the massive drop in quality of life being _that_ overweight brings you). Those illnesses need to be addressed first, or any attempt at making lifestyle changes fails fast and results in relapse

I know of this cat, he made it to the news here (Russia)! His name is Kroshik, he weighted 17 kilos when he was sent to get better and he's about 14-15 years old (his age is difficult to tell due to him being a street cat originally and his fat making it difficult to tell for sure). He sneaked into a hospitals basement one day and the workers decided to let him stay, while feeding him. He was actually a really fierce cat, a true street tom, and because of that his interactions with humans were limited to him being fed. Overtime, it was assumed that he didn't have much to do in the basement to help with boredom and what not, except for eating, which the workers were happy to help with. Which has led to what he is now today. He got his name from his cute face, and he actually dislikes people interacting with him, although at the moment he can't really do anything about it (except bite whomever getting near enough to his mouth XD) That vets that work with him are actually rather possitive about his situation! Despite his weight, that has affected his healty already, he already lost 1,1 kilos, which let him even try his escape! Cause when he was admitted, he couldn't even stand. So, all in all, Kroshik is in the right hands, let's hope he gets his full recovery ¦3
Remember guys: not every cat is fat because people force them to be A lot of times they are newly rehomed and their new owners are already doing what they can to help them drop the weight Other times people could be accidentally overfeeding them. Like people with Alzheimers or dementia who forget they've already fed them. Or well meaning people who can't play with their cats to exercise them(think disabled people like wheelchair users or folks with extreme body fatigue) Of course this doesn't excuse the animals gaining weight like this. It's not healthy AT ALL and actually puts them in pain due to the constant pressure on their joints and bodies that are meant to be small and lithe but I do think that a lot more people could be more aware of how animals get to be to this level of obesity. If people are not able to exercise their animals, they should ask for help. Take them on walks, get another animal that they can play with, or teach them tricks so they have the mental stimulation they need. SOMETHING is always better than nothing. And a lot of disabled folks DO properly take care of their animals but with rapid onset disabilities that you aren't prepared for, it can be harder to continue to do the things that you're used to doing before while more things are changing If people overfeed their animals due to memory issues, the people taking care of THEM should put away/hide the food, get help for the animal to exercise and remain healthy, and in more severe cases, rehome them. Either to another family member who can properly take care of them or to someone else who is able to take on the responsibility of weightloss and diet plans. All of this is just to say to please be respectful when asking about animals that are suffering from severe obesity. A lot of times, the people that are taking care of them ARE actively doing all that they can to fix it. They only need time.
