@onionskid no and it's annoying me! I keep getting lots of high 40s and getting into the 50s, but just can't get past 60. It will happen but I had a really bad 6 months playing where I have struggled with cueing straight and been bad. I have played better again recently and did a small 4 red lineup this week and cleared it all the way through including the colours...but missed the last black! What a wally.
Thanks again Steve, I could not wait to try this today. I instantly started to improve, I was getting out of position after getting about 16/17. But today trying this I am back into the twenties, the highest was 29. Yes I know not brilliant, years ago when I played every dinner time I was in the 40’s, highest was 50, that was years ago. Being a pensioner I can not afford to go everyday even though my club offers discount to us pensioners. Anyway thanks for this, at least I am improving again after the covid out break I kind of lost the plot. Chris.

One of my fave snooker vids from this series; simple fact of the matter is that the shots on here were simplified to effectively drop shots and applying plain ball. There has been over time a lot of knowledge and learning gained, but the Pros out there make it look easy and investment in time and practice is essential to be able to figure what you play on the ball and where the cue ball will finish.

You definitely make the best snooker instruction vids on TH-cam! "The cue ball" graphics where we can see where of hit the cue ball, your explanations etc. It's top shelf!! Suggestion: Could you consider doing a vid on how to predict where the cue ball will go after hitting the target ball? I find that to be extremely hard to do. Anyway...Thanks for uploading this vid...Greatly appreciated!

@@BartonSnookergreat video. In the spirit of showing the graphic of where the tip hits the white, perhaps also a speed meter so we can see how hard relatively you hit it? Granted that it's possible to kind of estimate based on both balls travel after the hit...

The line up is by far my favourite practice routine and I have made a few total clearances on the line up but I do tend to over complicate like you mention in the video. After this I think I’ll be able to it more often and more consistently. Thanks for the tips

I noticed you get the cue ball in a channel around 9 to 15 inches from the cushion avoiding too near the cushion and also not too near the middle of the table. I haven’t heard you talk about this in commentary. Are my observations correct. Yet again another simple but effective lesson, thanks Steve.
Thank you for your video. I saw your demonstration of screwing back from brown to blue without running through the cushion, but still applying left-hand side spin. You also applied side spin when going from pink to black, but also not ran through the cushion. Why is that? Is that any effect from side spin even not run through the cusion?

It still amazes me how simple you can make it look.
I'm yet to clear a full line up but i have had my one and only century this way, 108 and missed the yellow 😢.
I'll be taking trying this approach on my clubs tables to see if it helps 👌🏻
108 is fantastic. It's great fun now to try and push yourself and get that total clearance. Honestly this rolling in was the biggest thing that helped me on my journey. Give it a go and let me know how you do 👍
I need to do this more, I mainly play UK 8 ball pool and I'm getting a good Potter however Ive started to try and make the white do too much which jn turn makes me miss the pot. Alot of the time there's no need and should just concentrate on the simple shots like on this video.

Hi Steve. Brilliant tutorial again. I am curious ... I did think side only came into effect after hitting a cushion but with some of the soft screws you played here you applied a little side without the cue ball coming into contact with a cushion. Have i been miss informed about side coming into effect ‘after’ coming off a cushion? Thanks.
Hi. Side spin has the biggest effect when the cue ball hits the cushion.
Most professionals use a touch of 'helping side' on lots of shots.
It does two things:
1) naturally feels good for a player to apply the side and 'kick' the ball towards the pocket. The side applied on the cue ball throws the object ball a little wider.
2) it's speeds up the travel on the cue ball very slightly. It doesn't change the direction, it just speeds it up a little bit. You don't have to do it, but lots of professionals do.
So in summary, you are correct, without the cushion, it's only having a small benefit, so it is not compulsory that players do it.

It sounds like in a lot of cases a player will use a dab of side sometimes to help both cue ball and object ball on its merry way - as opposed to playing dead centre and risk putting unwanted side on. Is that right? It’s great you share you knowledge like this. Very helpful. Thanks. 👍
@@bbwnpat you're absolutely right. Instead of trying to be like a robot and be perfect, players just allow for that dab of helping side, and then it's already accounted for, and the behaviour of the cue ball is more predictable.

Fabulous instruction….and I can play every one of those shots. But how do I move past the mental hurdle that builds, and makes the 20th shot so much more difficult than than first, or the fourth?
It's not about the shot, it's about the process that that player takes.
I don't think about the break or that specific pot, only the process I go through every time.
Ah great tip that, thanks Steve 👌🏻 when I do the line up I tend to play screw back shots most often, interested to see how I get on with more run through shots

@BartonSnooker I had a go this evening, I found I wasn’t able to get into position to play the run through often enough and still had to play screw shots and stuns, but when there was a chance to do it the run through helped with it being simpler - I was looking for those shots more and they helped 👍 I got a 75 in the line up first try which doesn’t beat my record (93) but I’ve never scored that high first try! Thanks again Steve, loads of your videos have helped me improve not just this one 🙂

Great video as always, how come you use side when stunning, Is side still effective when the cue ball is not hitting a cushion ?
It's feels better to pot the ball, but it also speeds the cue ball up VERY SLIGHTLY. So I can hit slightly softer and the side will help the cue ball on it's way.
You don't have to play like that, but most professionals do.

Hi Steve, how do you deal with the sticky cue scenario, you mentioned it was sticking to your hand yet you didn't wipe it at all, my cue wasn't cheap, but in the summer months especially i feel like i'm constantly wiping it after every shot almost, and if i dont i start to develop a blister/friction mark on my bridge finger.
do you have a process you follow i.e sanding and oiling and if so how often so you can cope with these situations while you're playing?

I would normally wipe the cue with a slightly damp towel, and then a dry why to remove and grease and dirt, that then helps it glide better.
I would have normally wiped it, but obviously I was filming so I didn't want to stop.
I put cue wax on my cue every few months to keep is smooth. But the general wiping with the damp and dry cloth is all I do mostly.

@@seanditch4419 no. I never sand my cue. I don't even use wire wool on it. You'll be removing wood from the shaft and I don't want that.
I have difficulty by using Roll in to pot balls because the table cloth is so slow, I lose the cue ball control 😢

i managed my best so far 14 reds and 13 colours , just landed awkward on the Pink , and had to play with an extended cue from the baulk, making the angle difficult to see with the white so close.

4:27 - I notice the graphic shows bottom left on the cue ball, but you're not playing a swerve shot and the white is not contacting a cushion. Why the side?
That's a mistake in the editing. It should be bottom right. The right just helps to speed the cue ball up very slightly as I'm forcing a bit more of an angle 👍

im guilty of always thinking i need to add something to the ball usually screwing down to the next red or colour ,im gonna try this "simpler" run through technique more ,no idea why but i feel constantly trying to manipulate the ball is what will make me better and it isnt because i miss so many pots i shouldnt because im trying to manipulate the cueball too much 😂😂

You're exactly right. You don't want to hit balls too carefully and Hendry was a great example of that.
Too many club players hit everything with stun of screw (like I did). Then when I learned to find the natural angle, it improved my game out of sight.
But isn't it better to not put to much mileage on cue ball which Kieran Wilson does or did ? Alan McManus kept going on about it ,Williams rolls nearly every if he can I find this ruins my game if I try to play like this I understand it's not always necessary to play with screw or stun but find it more natural maybe it was because my 6 ft table wasn't level when I was young so had to play like that
@@johndean8295 you're absolutely right about mileage. I don't want the cue ball moving big distances.
But if you can roll a ball, there is no timing involved in that at all. Whereas a screw or stun requires extra timing (it's not JUST a judgement of pace).
If you can keep the shots as simple as possible, you'll see better results.
As you say, not as great test on a smaller table without a slate bed, as things will roll off a lot on those types of tables. It's not like 'real' snooker.
I knocked a few big breaks in when I was 13 or 14 ..60s and 70s well quite big ..the manager of the club Ron Sunderland was a good billiard and snooker player he said he wanted to play me and said wasn't playing enough shots with top around the black and pink so I know where your coming from ..the world billiard champion used to play in my club fella from.india geet his first name I used to love watching him ...also Nigel Gilbert I used to love watching and playing if I was lucky ..
