My bucket list goal in life is to throat sing while doing the moon walk ... it is my retirement goal!!! Probably won’t be a pretty sight.
I tried throat singing while doing the worm and now I have no sensation whatsoever below the waist.

As a singer (amateur), I've always been fascinated by throat singing but thought I'd never be able to do it without decades of formal training. With just this video, I was able to do it (badly) about the midpoint of the video! I heard the beginning of your next video and you were criticizing this video about how formal, and thus hard to watch, it was. Speaking for myself, I actually appreciate the formality and structure. I watched quite a few "learn throat singing in x minutes" and learned nothing from any of them, so thank you for the formal video because it put me on a path that I thought I'd never be on!

I think this video conveys really deep insight that goes beyond singing of any kind. As a 30+ year practitioner of martial arts, taiji and qigong, the advice and admonishments you mentioned are almost verbatim what I have been taught. The synergy amongst pursuits is truly striking.

I absolutely love your videos, they give me goosebumps by making me wonder at the beauty of our natural instrument and nature itself. They make me have deep conversations, it's hard to explain.
Today I was attempting to sing overtones when I noticed this cat that was staring at me, almost as if entranced. I changed location, all the while still humming, and then again noticed it staring at me from behind a bush through leaves: maybe it just wanted food 🤷♂️

Wow, nine minutes in I thought to try out singing "E." I think I throat sung, but I definitely heard my first little overtone! I was putting this on my bucket list, but now it's probably going to be one of my hobbies!

It's wonderful how relaxed your mind becomes when you let your voice do it's thing. How at start you try to make the overtones by consciously moving your mouth, but after short times of practice, I only imagine the sound and it is produced without any effort. It feels like your mind and body is finally at rest after a long day.

This is so awesome, very meditative too makes me feel grounded. Working on getting those overtones louder I can hear them but they are quiet only started yesterday though so time will bring it.
I used to be a singer. I kinda gave up though. This form of singing is new to me though. Makes me want to give it a try.

I just started studying music about 9 months ago and I just wanted to tell you this video really helped me put a bunch of the pieces together and I wanted to say thank you. The overtone stuff was awesome and that’s why I came here but I believe it’s called “music theory” some of the things you were talking about and it was very enlightening for me so again thanks this was awesome! You’ve got a new subscriber.
Interesting. Overtones have a higher scale than what is typically found upon an instrument. However, it does explain why I much prefer to play very deep tones on stringed, bowed, wind, and reed instruments. I find the overtones add a certain depth to the sound. I've found on the keyboards I have, typically the lower notes have a major third (or at least what I'm most sensitive to) on the lower tones, if stacked, create an augmented triad. Combined with the other overtones, they have quite a unique sound. I enjoy the overtones too as for me they create much more melodic scale than aolian and ionian.
I honestly never thought I could sing because I was either singing in overtone series (not throat singing, but actual singing using the overtone scales in my singing voice), or I was singing in different modes altogether, long before I even knew they were a thing! I also had a very quiet singing voice, partly because of the shame I had over singing in different modes and scales which got me scolded several times, but also because I have a smaller lung capacity and had a respirator down my throat for several months as a premature infant which caused some scarring. Then I discovered some white handed gibbons at the local zoo. I started imitating their calls, and while learning to speak gibbon I found my singing voice as a more opera style of singing. I find that also uses some of the tongue, cheek and lip positions as throat singing. Then I found your videos!
Thanks Alex! You are a great vocal teacher and I enjoyed the lesson I had with you. Trying to "not suck" at improv has taken up quite a bit of my time the past couple of years but I hope to get to a point soon where I have the bandwidth to try to "not suck" at overtone singing too. Maybe someday Buffalo will have an overtone choir which would be cool! 😀
Always visit the uncomfortable areas that "suck". By visiting those places you'll get the results you want. Playing and practicing well is always for those who have the courage to suck, and relish it, dwell in the sucking spaces, and emerge with at the very least appreciation for the ugly beauty of those spaces, which will disappear the longer we linger within them.

I was fascinated by this last night and I tried following your advice this morning. I trained the I-U-OU-U-I the most because it felt like something was there and it developed into something bigger. Now it's 7pm and I can definitely hear some strong harmonics in the U vowel (I'm French, maybe that helped!) Thank you for this amazing video, it's so soothing and brings us back to the essentials :)

Thank you, I learned how to basically overtone sing by reading an article written by a japenese guy, but just the basics of producing a few and getting comfortable with it, then I saw your video. Prior to that, I hadn't seen any non-tuvan/western mongolian sing overtones that well. I was blown away by your 7 styles video. Thanks for putting this out, just started but already helping so much. I hope to go to Tuva some day. I play jaw harps as well, one thing I notice about the Tuvan style of playing is how they create only the overtones which sound purest, ie those which mimic their singing the most. Thanks.

By far the best tutorial on overtone singing! Will def contact you for a lesson once I have nailed down some basics. Right now I am beggining to hear the overtones slightly, when going from "ee" to "u". One thing I find difficult is to avoid singing nasaly, I have to constantly remind myself to focus on the throat.

Hello Alex, first off I want to say that I love this video. It gave the most useful tips for overtone and throat singing, are you going continue with more tips because I want to learn how to significantly lower the volume of the fundamental tone and mostly hear a single over tone.

Hey Alex. I just really wanted to thank you for putting your efforts out in the world. I'm 25 now and I found your video when I was 16. You got me into something I've enjoyed so much over the years. It's by no means a passion, but definitely a joy and splendor. It ended up pointing me to look into not just singing, but the spiritual backing within many practices as well. Without that I would be someone very different, and I don't know how I would've gotten through so many things that happened growing up. I really appreciate it very much. Thank you.

Ok so...I came upon this video looking for ways to develop some intentional raspiness in my voice to be able to sing some parts with more "emotional" touches. Had already been talked about the fake vocal folds being essential to achieve "screams" that won't strain or damage our real vocal folds etc etc etc....then somehow I bump into this and ended up watching the whole thing, the WHOLE 37:35 mins video, as I found myself more and more deep into the whole practice of overtones....
What kind of sorcery is this??! Loved it from minute one. Such a clear way to explain and show... and by far, the best explanation I've seen of proper breathing that I've found on youtube. Now I want to know it all!
