The John Deere 9510R is back! Time to get the turbo, EGR cooler, and exhaust manifold fixed right!

- The 9510R made it through spring planting! We were able to get the oil contamination in the cooling system under control with replacing the oil cooler (oil cooler tested bad) and the fan drives replaced so it could finish up this spring. The tractor had to finish spring with a terrible noise coming from the turbo, an exhaust manifold leak, and a cracked EGR cooler. With the weather window we had there was not enough time to stop and fix the rest. Now I can go back and fix it right. Got to replace the turbo, remove the exhaust manifold, and extract all the studs, including one that is broken off in the head. Also, in the middle of repairs, I get called to go look at an 8R 370 that had a full blown engine harness meltdown.

Copper grease the saving grace of exhaust studs ! Broken studs in a head, the things bad dreams are made of, good job removing the thorn in the system !
Thank you!
An old mechanic taught me a trick with exhaust flange bolts, you heat it up then you zap it with cold water.Thermal shock 😊
Thermal crack 😂
I'm an old farmer. My experience ends with a John Deere 70 diesel with a pony motor starter. These new tractors are just fantastic. Now some even drive themselves, I'm told. Unbelieveable!
Was watching a fishing video, but saw the pop-up for your video and instantly switch to watch.
Thank you for the upload!
Awesome! Thank you!
Best organized service truck in the USA!
I really enjoy your videos and commentary. I also really like that I can work on big tractors vicariously rather than hands on. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks 👍
Awesome job young man. It must feel good to have no leakage .
I always enjoy your videos and commentary. The “Hard as woodpecker’s lips” was so funny. 😂
Glad you like them!
I pulled a 9500 combine 3 mille home one night behind a half ton chevy.
You know without power steering those combines are kinda gnarly, lol.
Just had the motor go out in our 9510R. Ugh! New one on its way and hope to get it back this fall. I enjoy these 9510R video’s. Keep em coming.
You’re doing real good
I love seeing all your tools and tricks of the trade
Thanks!
Zeth, cant tell enough how much I love your channel and all the great content, be safe.
Glad you enjoy it!
Jealous of your tool collection. But hey, you can have all the best tools in the world and it won't help a thing if you don't have the knowledge. That's why you are the master of the green iron machines!! 🚜🚜🛠️😁🇿🇦
We have a spray here in New Zealand that actually freezes things. The idea is that if you spray the bolt or stud that it will shrink it enough to break it loose. I haven’t tried it yet but am very interested in seeing if it works.
Really enjoying your content as I used to farm in the 1970"s and 1980"s. I do have a question regarding the exhaust manifold installation, why did you not use anti-seize on the studs ? When I was still working, I used that on anything that might be an issue in removing later on. After farming I drove truck cross country for26 years and we used anti-seize many things that could be hard to remove later and I can attest to the power and usefulness of this product. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming.
Good job,I'm a John fan in Australia,I did a few hours in the old 8650 4wd and then some more in the old 9400 4wd,I loved my time in the 8650
Johnny fan
Grabbing handful of tools n loading your tool bag I was thinkin “ oh boy this means war”. 😂😂
Great job!
You are a good man. Keep up the good work. Job well done.
Another great video can’t stop watching
Great video!
Once you open up Pandora‘s box, you just never know what you’re gonna get the time-consuming part grinding of Exhaust studs off
Another remarkable video, thanks!
Forget the loto ticket. Your luck has been used up!!!😂😂😂
Another great tool for turbo clamps would be the new Milwaukee fuel M12 Insider ratchet. It has pass thru sockets up to 15mm - 9/16sae. Its thin profile is great for tight spaces.
What would you say is the total worth of all your tools?
Zeth, du machst immer eine gute Arbeit 🇨🇭😇
Shake n break air hammer bit for getting those studs out I think would work well
I'm sure you already know, and probably have done this but to clean out a oil contaminated coolant system I'll use dishwasher tablets or powder. Run it for a few hours and drain it, flush 4-5 times with straight water before a final fill with coolant. Works like a damn charm every time.
Greetings from Spain (Canary Islands). I have been following the channel for quite some time and I love the work you do, a true professional. I work in a state company where there is an agricultural department, in which they have Jhon Deere 6320SE and 5515F tractors; tractors with very good performance in terms of quality of their components. A comment as a fan, the guitar theme song has to be part of all the videos.
Greetings.
Saludos.
Mayhew makes a REALLY good stud extractor, I use it on manifold bolts all the time and itll pull them right out, plus its impact rated and its lifetime warranty, my Snap on guy carries them on the truck. I think its somewhere around 120$ but 100% worth it. It can even grab some small broken stubs unlike other extractors ive tried.
Also give Spyder drill bits a try, ive been using them recently and really like them. Havent needed it on manifolds yet but have drilled out spot welds with them fairly easily
Awesome job!
Great awesome video
Love watching your videos, did you use any anti seize on the studs when you put them back in for the “next” time?
Cracking video 👍🥃🏴
Nice Vid!
Good job
John Deere should buy these videos from you and use them for training!
Que arsenal de ferramentas grande🤩🤩🤩🤩
You’re truck is what I hoping for in heaven 😅
You let me know how you are doing. I think you are doing great. Thanks for sharing 👍. Happy subscriber 😊!
Thanks for subbing!
The Blues. Indeed.
No 'never-seize' on the studs ?? Screws up the factory torque specs ??
Did you ever try a Mag drill? a magnetic base drill, once in place it acts like a drill press, change drill sizes and stay on location
Awesome.
Does Deer say no Antiseize on exhaust studs?
These new gen JD's are nothing but trouble. Makes me glad i'll never get rid of my 4450 or my 4650...no computers, DEF, DPF, just trouble free farming.
Opening pandora box is ever day occurrence for me work in apt maintenance 😢sometimes I wonder why I do this?😢
I thought you were going to do the wax trick on those bolts. I want to know if it really works.
When do we get a truck tour if FAV2 now that you’ve had time to get it all set up
You already done with out extracting those bolt tale it out assembled
can anyone tell me the part number of the milwaukee 3/8 high speed ratchet softgrip cover please
When you were torquing the studs into the block, what set up were you using?
Snap on tech angle 3/8
Fire it up, fire it up, fire it up. Taryl fixes all. 😂😂😂
I use jb 80 nd it works a hell of alot better then wd 40 Kroil pb blaster
Egr cooler wouldnt be needed if not for the tree huggers. You know the egr is going to coke up.
46:50 it kinda looks like the tire has a bubble at the letter "H" the customer should get that looked at if they don't want it blowing up
What about an air hammer for the turbo exhaust? Not suggesting... asking
Are all those neat tools yours, or the Co.?
His
Hey zk I know you’re a technician but I’m very interested in getting a career in parts with John Deere do you have any tips or anything like that
👍
U should get a ford service truck that 7.3 is ford zilla.
Bet your Snapon guy would trade you a new extractor for that one if you leave it like it is so he can show other techs the value.
once you got that broken bolt out you might as well go home.
It won't get any better than that.
👏👏👏
Thanks for another great video ZK.
It was interesting and informative and enjoyable to watch.
Wow. You are having a busy busy schedule. Of course planting time so any tractor breakdown that involves a planter is fix right away type call. I do understand.
Well, anyway nice going with your dodge ram truck pulling the wiring harness tractor back to the farm and getting that farmer a rent tractor to use until parts are available for his. Believe you said your dealership was looking for parts.
Now back to the original tractor you were working on that needed a turbo and a few other things. Getting all that apart proved a challenge of sorts. Broken manifold studs are the worst. But knowing you, you did a fantastic job of getting it out. Yeah!!!!!!! Then pressing ahead. Lifting that turbo up there was no easy task. Was a learning experience seeing all the stuff you had to take off to do that. Once again, you were a great teacher and we learned lessons from you on the process. Wow. Not easy. Too bad you couldn’t use your crane. Low roof in the shop but it was air conditioned so that was excellent!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice going ZK on the one. You sailed through it in good time plus helping with another tractor.
Hang in there. My compliments to you for moving right along on the turbo project. Wonderful John Deere service again by a highly qualified technician. Nice 👍!!!!!!!!
Thanks for teaching us again. Was a good one to watch.
Thanks ZK.
The Iowa farm boy. Steve
😊👍👍👋🇺🇸🇺🇸
How many hours were on the turbo the oil cooler heat exchanger I can only imagine the cost the parts alone would be in the thousands
"harder than woodpecker lips" lol. I've been there Zeth.
So the real question is- what was the total bill from the start to repair this due to a leaking oil cooler? Plus what was the hours on the tractor?
So do you have a 2nd mortgage with the Snap on guy ???
Saying that customers don't understand the tools alone much less the knowledge to correctly fix things today.. Which reflects in the price or bill for a job like this..
Great job keep up the good work.
Wow! What a awesome vid! Your knowledge is so appreciated! Keep the deere's running! Stay safe!
Really love watching your videos. I’m in the John Deere Tech program and I’m close to graduating with near all A’s however this is the stuff they don’t teach you. It’s great to see some tricks since service advisor doesn’t show you every way to get it done. Keep up the great work!
"This will fight you to the bitter end" I felt that. I know exactly what you mean.
Great job and content!
I had a new JD turbo. The tech put it on and it kept leaking oil on the return line gasket. I tried. The tech tried. We tightened till we thought it was going to break the 2 bolts. 2 new gaskets. No change, still leaking. Turned out the new turbo had the threaded holes were not tapped deep enough and the bolts were bottoming out with about 1 mm left as clearance at the gasket surface. Our solution was to grind the bolts shorter. So much for JD reman quality.
I can put a turbo on but you got to pay a tech to CB one out and programs the computer to calibrate it. 😡😡😡
Hey, I've always used deep creep. And it works good! But CRC came out with a penetrant called screw loose and it works even better, should give it a try aswell!
Some nice work there zeth .those bolts put up i fight to come out.
Like you say easier to fit a new part than trying to drill out the bolts .👍👍👍
All that's left to do now is the birds nest fire damage 😯
Your doin great! Keep em comin
Thanks! Will do!
This is why I never aspired to be a mechanic.
Rust never sleeps nor does tractor problems 😢
Deere got it wrong on the get go with emissions.
Thanks for the videos.
If you use the finger snap, it makes things so much easier.😊
I’d have started the extraction with a center drill, stiffer and easier to get started, then with its taper leaves a great place to start larger drills
Good job
Bless What really helps you is your tool assortment. Thanks 😊
Have you ever used Zep-45 with Teflon, I've had really good results with it. Thanks for another great vid!
Great video! Well done...absolut great work!
Thank you very much!
Another great video. A true master tech. Thanks Zeth
Really Enjoy All Your Videos and Everything You Get To Work On YOUR SO AMAZING AND MAKE THINGS LOOK SO EASY WISH YOU COULD MAKE MORE VIDEOS BUT UNDERSTAND THAT SOMETIMES YOU CANT KEEP AS MANY VIDEOS COMING AS YOU CAN THANKS FOR LETTING US SEE INTO YOUR WORLD OF FIXING JOHN DEERE EQUIPMENT
Awesome work on those exhaust manifold studs. You call it luck, but it looks like skill to me!
Great job once again
Like your videos, your very good at your job 👍👍
Another great video Zeth!
Another great video ZK! I must say that Ram of yours pulled that tractor a lot better than I thought it would! Is it 4WD?
Yes it is!
Excellent workmanship!
Great content, the bolt extraction procedure was worth the watch for inexperienced mechanics......patience is the key, and getting lucky really helps too.....:)
Tell the truth! You just wanna milk the air conditioned shop. 😂
It was very nice!
Just near the beginning - sorting out tools: you have to use BOTH Metric AND INCH sizes on ONE Machine ? Thought they' all be AF Spanners ( no metric stuff at all on Waterloo builds ).
following from the uk 👌
Dear Sir ZK MasterTch! Youst like to say, you are the real deal man! After 5 minutes of first TH-cam video i watch, i know this is man with knowledge! 😊 CEO Peter Eriksson, Falun Maskin Service, Dalarna SWEDEN EUROPE!
I have the new metaphor "harder than woodpecker lips" added to my list of "tighter than, colder than, hotter than...! Hey, the turbo and EGR look rebuildable. Does Deere give a core charge on these and remanufacture them?
