Today I decided to toss out some giant lures in search of a big fish and we got not one, but two massive pike in todays video.

@@benpurcell4935 Snakes(hammer handles) will still hit a lure their own size, they'll never swallow it but they'll hit it.
@@frogsnacks I understand that but it relates to the original comment in that there is a lure to big for a juvenile.
@@benpurcell4935 And I'm saying there is not, I've caught tiny pike on big lures all it takes is for a pike to hit it and a hook to stick. I 100% stand by the original comment. There is no lure to big for pike, even juveniles.
I use larger baits for Muskie and large northern Pike in Ontario. While working as a guide in Northern Ontario, on a regular occasion had 45 + inch pike attack and hold onto 15 inch Walleyes I was reeling in. On several occasions I was able to also net the pike which had refused to release the walleye. One of my favourite baits for Muskie is a homemade 15 inch “strawberry” paint pattern glide bait. I’m not surprised to see that the larger pike are hitting the smaller ones and striking your glide bait.

@@NASPELTZ I agree there is nothing more exciting than catching Muskie or Pike on surface lures. I’ve seen Muskie actually take ducklings while they were swimming in a group. If you haven’t tried a surface fishing for pike go get yourself a prop style surface bait, something that makes a lot of surface noice, and try it. Your heart will really start to beat when you see a large “V” coming across the surface heading for your lure.
I have the same experiences. I too worked for an outfitter in northern Ontario and quite a few times while fishing for some eater walleye I have netted some big pike alongside them that just take a bite and refuse to let go all the way into the boat!
Big pike take small lures. Especially in the summer when all the new born fish are their main diet.
I was in the boat the day my Dad caught two fish with one livebait. He had a Koheru baitfish under a balloon, a Kahawai took it, about 300mm so not a big fish, but they are fighters He took in in towards a reef, to try to break off in the weed, and dad said "Damn, it got into the weed . . . hang on . . . oh, it must have just got caught in some, I am getting it in, but it is heavy . . ."
Wound it up to the boat, asked excitedly for the net, and then landed a HUGE John Dory, far and away the biggest any of us had ever seen. Once in the bottom of the boat, it opened its mouth and out popped the Kahawai it had not been hooked at all, because the Kahawai had the hook right in its mouth.
Dad was not prepared to kill such a huge old fish, the old fish are always the best stock, so he put it back.

It has been a while since it flooded like this. This year was a good year for monster pikes and walleyes there when it flooded. I missed my 4" swimbait on a monster pike there on a kayak when i was there. Glad you recorded this flood!

5:32 Pike are notorious for missing the target despite a lure being fairly large. This comes from someone who caught a limits worth of pike in Canada. Had the same situation happen to me twice back to back.

You should try a rubber ducky lure floating on the lake.
Try a hellhound. It’s my favourite glide for musky. When the colour wears off the lure gets more bites

I don’t know how it is in the us but here in Sweden pikes will take lures the size of themselves all the time. I usually never use baits smaller than 9 inches for pike. Size just doesn’t matter for them, as long as it swims it’s food
Northern pike don't get enough respect. I fish for both pike and muskies and pike are just as cool as muskies are if you ask me.

There is no such thing as "too big bait" when it comes to pike, it either work or not, i am not a pro or expert but the only thing i've noticed is that you can catch more on slow lures in winter. I caught my biggest one on a 3.5 inch silicone fish and the last one i got was a 4-4.5 inch pike on a 5.5 lure.. they are just different, sometimes they feed on the top, sometimes in the bottom, sometimes on metal lures, sometimes on wobbler sometimes on slider.m etc. When i got my pb i was fishing in a 30ft wide/long pool of water and i got it after about 40minutes of fishing the same spot with the same lure on the same angle of casting, i only caught it because i was getting bored and just let the lure sink in the 5ft deep water slowly and for some reason that gave the pike enough time to attack(i guess). Sorry for the long post, i am just waiting for the time to give my baby the last meal of the day

Yes that’s correct. Statewide starts may 14 here in Minnesota. But I’m fishing border waters, this area is flooded, but the water flooding it is the Mississippi river which is bordering Wisconsin here. So different regs

Do you think I could catch something like that with spinners and spoons and whopper ploppers? I don’t have anything heavy enough for those lures and I don’t want to spend so much money on another combo.
Absolutely, big fish love big baits but they will also chase smaller stuff. Especially if the body of water has lots of smaller baitfish

Sorry brother but that bait is big but it’s not 12” or 1’ whatever you prefer! There is no way you’re hand is 10” bc that thing didn’t hang far past but good fish! The fish have bite marks and ich. What pound test did you use to throw that monster?
It’s 8 I think I said it somewhere in the video, didn’t mean to say 12 at the start I was using some 12 inch glide baits and switched to this smaller one
Try using a live crappie on a treble hook and float that works great for me

The pike probably weren't fighting hard due to the time of year, weather conditions and by the look of it not well oxygenated water.
It’s probably the color the color makes a huge difference they aren’t able to see certain colors well in certain conditions and can’t find the bait
