"(Shamanic aspects of medicine) are so stitched into our anthropological consciousness that replacing them will really mean the death of human beings." Way to drop a bombshell, Dr. Mukherjee...

No offense, but you should try doing cancer research yourself instead of going the wrong way about describing how people are dealing with this dreadful disease.

I also had invasive lobular cancer, stage 3C. I'm still here after 8 years, and hope you wife fared well, too. I loved this book.

      1. You are quite wrong - it's not a deficiency disorder. 2. The FDA is not lying to anyone. 3. You should not be making your uneducated comments on this site.@deprogrammer

Every cancer patient should read this book, and every family member of a cancer patient should read this book as well.

Couldn't resist any longer. Watched this and decided to finally buy the book. Just did on Kindle. excited to start reading. As a biomedical researcher (with interest and some working experience in cancer) this is a must-read to finally tick off!

It's a good book but could do without lapsing into digressions like describing Dorchester, Massachusetts. Such irrelevancies mar what would otherwise be a great read. Sometimes, while reading, I just think, "Get to the point!". The book does have a lot of great information and is otherwise well-written. Highly engrossing and interesting.

I’ve become very pessimistic about curing cancer. About a decade ago when the promise of stem cells was the rage I was very optimistic but now ten years later most of the stem cell research and companies funding it have folded and with it the promise of a cure. The truth is we really do not understand cancer and as these researchers found out that the more we learn the more we discover that the less we know. When I look at the state of cancer today and most frontline treatment is still radiation which was the main treatment 60 years ago is a very sobering reality at how little progress we have made. Yes the earlier detection and screening is better but once you have cancer it is really generally a death sentence. Even the hope of immunotherapy is limited to one type of cancer and recent trials with pancreatic cancer showed no improvements. The problem is that we really do not understand cancer and the various forms and stimuli which makes it so difficult to beat. When I hear idiotic politicians of both sides with the latest being Joe Biden saying we will cure cancer in 4 years if he’s elected is as Sid said stupid. It’s not a political issue. It’s something that will still be here In all of our lifetimes. There is no cure round the corner.

@westfield90 I hear you! This is 2020 but still neither a definitive cause nor a definitive cure has been found for cancer. Every passing decade there's been an increase in new types of 🦀 cancers!
How many thousands of doctors, scientists, biologists and oncologists, nutritionists have been working on cancer cure since 1950s?
As long as there are trillion-dollar pharma companies trying to cure cancer, it will only increase and not decrease; I hope you got the clue.
