@@TheCruisingKiwis Thanks to Zatara I started to follow you from Dampier OZ. Then I realised Rob was a Famous Oarsman. Great Guy & your Family is a credit to you. Great to follow Kiwis.
Just do it from time to time. But no worries, even in this vlog, talking about important things, you made us smile. Like, for example, the chocolate part. I guess it doesn't last long the reserves you might add to the emergency kit each time you get new tablets😂 And the cards!! In deed, keeping busy and calm is a very important thing in crisis (something you know how to manage very well 👍😀). Also, I loved the part were you advise aunty Hilary to stay away, haha. I'm saving this vlog to review the rest of the items, specialy the thing to filter the water. Well, hopefully this is the ladt time you show all of this, and the floating tent (way more claustrophobic than a cave!). Safe journey, team Hamill!!
That seemed an impossible mission! Did they completed, or it took so long that they resigned to find the raft? Declan assumed Finn's safty role, while Ivan seems to keep the laughing role to "disestress" everyone haha
Has Rob found the life raft yet? I’d avoid a life raft at all costs because it hasn’t got sky TV for sports🤣 I last remember doing life raft drills at British Airways when I was flying the 737 more than 20 years ago. Can’t imagine there would’ve been much chance of getting to it in reality. Only one Hudson River I hope. Put quick drying fleece Beanie hats in the grab bag 🤓
Yeah good call. We would also prefer a vhf that takes AA/AAA batteries. The ones most common these days are the rechargeable slab shaped batteries that only last about 24 hours in standby.
A Heliograph (mirror) works really well. If you don't have one a CD disk works quite well. Think of it as a trillion candle power torch that even the dumbest helicopter crew will see from miles away!!

Really informative guys. Agreed Whittakers is the way to go. Must have REAL chocolate. I have some in my bed side drawer (and some cashew nuts) for emergencies. Strangely I have an emergency most nights...... Think it must be a Christchurch thing.......
Well that was freaky. Was reading the official report into the SY Platino accident where the two crew were killed by an accidental gybe, when this video from you guys pops up. About safety on boats and safety gear! Somebody is trying to tell me something here. Good on you for posting this. What alot of people would probably like to see would be a Cat 1 inspection if you have any footage of that. It's something that seems to intimidate a lot of people. At least this time Rob doesn't seem to have injured himself! Are you still hoping to head off to Fiji soon?
Hi Owen, we have been hearing lots of stories about whales hitting yachts or yachts hitting whales which has us on hyper alert. The videos are in real time now and we hope to be heading out to Fiji next week weather permitting.
Yes, originally there were eight bars of chocolate for this vlog. Four mysteriously disappeared before filming. The other four have since suffered the same fate. Time to go shopping.
Cool video, I like the idea of the self defense flare, but I think i'll stick to my Glock 17. I did see it on that movie with Nicole Kidman, Dead Calm, but I doubt it would happen like Hollywood depicts!
VHF radio - CHANNEL 16!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's what everyone is listening. If you're in Indonesia, that's where fishing boats broadcast their horrible music to each other.
I was referring to the NZ passports. My passport was the burgundy European one Declan held up with the others at the beginning. No Finn on board but we will be taking a couple of extra crew.
Where are you based? We are amazed that duty free shops here in Malaysia sell Whittakers, and at a very reasonable price. There's bound to be somewhere near you: though it might cost an arm and a leg.
The nearest food store is like 20 miles away, I have a small dollar general store close but they don't have much. I am going to google "where to find Whittakers" Lol.
I have found a place online to buy the chocolate, it is a place called Kiwi Corner Dairy, and a block is 6 dollars US. I am also going to go to town and look in the stores there, so maybe I will be able to enjoy some yet, I am a chocolate freak, love me some chocolate. Lol.
To summarize: Rule 1. Those five will stay with the boat evem after it sinks. Rule 2. This family has a plan like every NEVER. They sailed 2,000 miles from Fiji to NZ to buy a boat and... didn't buy a boat. Who's in charge of abandonment - RACHEL. BUT!!! Allow at least 2 hours for her to finish asking - why EXACTLY the boat is sinking - what is the name of the Fountaine Pajot worker who made the part of the boat that's leaking - is he married - is he married happily - do they have a cat or a dog - has Rob ever met him during his travels - what EXACTLY is the sea temperature - what did you say was the channel we should be transmitting SOS - what's the number of the naval detachment that's flying to resque us - where is Ivan - did he eat Rule 3. It never works. Especially if you have a life raft that is intended for EXACTLY the number of souls onboard. Your life raft is TINY! If you have five people onboard, get a raft for 12. Yes, "the erg" goes overboard. ALWAYS opt for SOLAS 2. It has scissors (which you don't need) and FISHING KIT (which you do). ALWAYS check the batteries in your "emergency" flash-lights. AND check the compressed CO2 bottles INSIDE your life jackets. Bet you didn't even know they are there. They DO rust and fail. So when you're thrown out of the boat, you pull the cord and nothing happens - NOT FUN. And the main rule - DO NOT think it'll never happen to YOU. Think about it as "it will". Then if it happens, you'll just be oh there it is, let's go. And a little secret just between us. Children between ages of 12 and 15 are the tastiest. Older teens tend to be a bit bony and adults are outright chewey. You know what to do. Heeey, Iiiiivaaaan. It's time for diiiinneeeeeeeer.
6:20 DO NOT use those as weapons. One, if you are being attacked at sea, THEY are prepared, YOU aren't. DO NOT resist and definitely don't shoot at anyone. And two, look at how Rachel holds it. If she tries to fire it, she is much more likely to injure one of her cherubs or her long-suffering husband than whoever she's aiming at. Come on, people, dont give bad advices. Stick to bad examples.

Agreed. And if you see the end of our latest video you mightl suggest 'complete with cooking utensils'. Thanks!

Great information! This is very helpful with lots of good tips. Don't forget the shark repellent.

Informative and entertaining. Loved Declan's take as he paused to find the passports!
All best, Daniel Wardin.
Thanks Daniel! Being informative is probably one of our weaknesses. Probabaly need to share more knowledge, at risk of becoming boring.
