I totally agree too with you we mess with them too much I'm trying to not mess with them too as I have had lots of issues with year Take care and good ponding days
Totally agree with you. I used to feel guilty not doing things that you get advised to do but I didn’t and my fish are fine and I used to think I’ve been lucky. Or like you say have they just developed their immune system?? The main thing I do is ensure my water parameters are good and they seem to look after themselves!!
Great content Johnny! You are on the right track. Over treating your Koi’s isn’t good, it stresses them. Same is too much filtration. That is the reason why I love brush / multi bay filtration so much. 👍
I’m thinking along the same lines as you, Johnny and coming to the same conclusion, it’s a big industry with profits to be made. I’ve currently got an inground pond probably 25 years old with six Coin, the six Koi are over 20 years old also, never had any treatments, previously run off a small box filter and now offer pressurised filter, they’ve been fed on average food sticks, and look a little large for the pond which is probably under 1500 L, there’s a small leak in the pond so they get lots of water change straight from the tap with no filtering.
Super interesting Woody mate sounds like you got it perfect pal. Thank you so much for the support mate. And so far so good glad to see it works for you too 🙏
Hi Johnny. I think there will be arguments for, and against on this subject, but my personal thoughts are I’m with you on this one. Water quality is the upmost importance in this hobby. BTW, there are some nice fish in your pond, but that shirt has to win the prize for best colouration 😂.
Hi mate 👋 Thank you so much, I was a little nervous about putting this out so thank you 🤩 It working for me mate and I am happy to hear it works fo you pal. Take care and thanks again
Every time you net one treat the pond or whatever is a stress event. They will do the odd flash now and again. I was throwing handfuls of silkworm in when I got them again. Caused a slight ammonia read and with my high ph it always has an effect. There was slight flicking and pec flapping but filters stepped up a few days later. Others would have netted scraped and caused undue stress. Everyday is a school day we're always learning mate 20 years keeping koi and this season has been a hard one for me. The hardest thing for a koi keeper is sitting on our hands and leaving the F alone hahaha. Glad things are going better for you dude.. 👍🏻 saw one of your shorts in Porte Des Torrent. Cracking beach, we spend a lot of time there it's stunning.
Porte Des Torrent was lovely mate, making me want a holiday now. Thank you so much, I was a little nervous about putting this out so thank you 🤩 It working for me mate and I am happy to hear it works for you pal. Take care and thanks again
Johnny good to see you back again, good video , what you are saying is right ,I’ve kept koi for many years and have tried many popular treatments but found them lacking basically most of them don’t work and are too expensive ,I don’t mollycoddle my koi they go straight into the pond and if anything appears on them I always use salt with maybe the odd additive , a drop of whisky does them the world of good ! 😂 love the shirts❤
Thanks Tina ❤️ Thank you so much for the support. And so far so good glad to see it works for you too 🙏 And super happy you like the shirts I have made my first sale :-)
I think we all go OMG when a fish flashes or does 'something' that we don't expect. We need to try and just take a step back, take a breathe and maybe watch instead of freaking out. Not easy to do but maybe we need to do this. I do use PP in the spring just as a 'clean out' after the winter and I am pleased to say that up to this point I have had no parasite issues this season despite the weather. My water is not absolutely perfect..ph has gone up and down this year and I do have a very very slight nitrite issue but zero ammonia...but I am happy.
So true. i have koi for 8 years never treated them for annything. yes sometimes in the spring they have some flashing but it always goes away. they are still going strong.
Hi Johnny: absolutely spot on what you're doing I believe. I txt you on here while back saying how mate's of mine never do anything as such and koi doing well: and I'm faffing round doing this n that. Anyway I've since changed: I only clear filter if it's blocked and I've taken 2 of the chambers off my 3 chamber tap into pond filter: so only decolonisation now not the other sand n metals things: it was making my already soft water too soft ( I didn't know any better) and I only top up for evaporation . All is great with water and fish and like you said: my fish have also healed themselves from little ulsers they had because of what id done previously. That's my new way in this hobby anyway. Good luck to you and all us koi people.
Hi mate 👋 Thank you so much, awesome to hear about your pond mate and thanks for the text. I was a little nervous about putting this out so thank you 🤩 It working for me mate and I am happy to hear it works fo you pal. Take care and thanks again
Shirt looks great! Nice update. I think Ive been hyper vigilant on my pond too. Probably because I have had so many issues and fish losses. I tend to jump in every time I see a problem. I’m trying to not do that as much. At times I’ve just basically thrown my hands up in defeat. I currently still have several poorly koi. But it’s so stressful and takes the joy out of koi keeping, as I’m sure you know. We are building a new sleeper pond with a window and it’s almost ready for koi! Yay! I’m not giving up yet😊. Keep us updated
HiSusan 👋 Thank you so much, I literally just made my first sale of Hawaiin shirts on ebay 7 minutes ago. BUZZING. I was a little nervous about putting this episode out so thank you 🤩 Stay strong with your pond keeping and make the best decisions for you. Good luck with the sleeper pond take care and thanks again
I agree mate used to panic every time a koi flashed. Had 3 knocks n all healed this year by themselves just checked through the window to check the wounds were'nt going red n getting worse. Wild carp n free koi live in a huge amount of water compared to our ponds so it isnt an exact comparison but yes we can toughen them up by seeing how they get on n interviening obly when we need to.
Hi I’ve watched many koi videos seeing scrapes treatments etc. I do same I have never ever scraped or treated small water changes / filter cleans / don’t over feed and they have never had issues. I believe same no one goes to these rivers lakes. I also watch fish behaviour and the same. Totally relate.
Exactly that mate. Look after the water and the koi will look after themselves. To a point. Costia and whitespot need to be dealt with asap. The others they can cope with at low levels and if the water improves they can fight whatever it is off. Wanna see this body art now if hes as good as you say he is 👍
Cheers BobbbStar. Mate you will love it, Tattoo video is awesome mate Im really really happy, comes out at 4.30 today just finished it. Put a lot of effort into it.
This is only my second year koi keeping and I’ve stuck to just maintaining the water parameters I treated twice from recommendation from my local koi dealer but still had some flashing so I just tried leaving them along and within a month no more flashing that was 8 months ago and not had any issues since I’ve seen the odd couple flash always seems to be the same few that flash the others never flash this will go on for a few days and I just reduced the feeding for two or three days and once stopped flashing I go back to feeding again it’s working for me I really would rather not interfere as much as possible also, I also had one escape through the skimmer no idea how as it was a big fish I just putting him back in the pond and left him to heal on its own few people recommend all sorts of treatments but as I was still learning and was nervous handling them I left him to sort it’s self out and you’d never know it ever happened
I've had trichodina for over a year...all doing fine. Couple of injuries from flashing, healed fine. One thing i would suggest - to build an ecosystem, get some more plants. To keep good water, you got to complete the nitrogen cycle and the best way is plants rather than constant water changes. There are floating baskets and things you can hang in there. As for PP, its a horrid treatment. Its a disinfectant and it wrecks the ecosystem as well as hampering the slime coat coming back.
Brilliant points there mate and Im 100% going in the plant direction. Thank you so much for the support mate. And so far so good glad to see it works for you too 🙏
Absolutely. I let them get on with it unless it is something I see as very serious. I lost 3 new fish last winter because of the cold while my 25+ year old fish went through it no problem. I've found koi coming from koi dealer's aren't very tough whereas garden centre koi, tough as old boot's ! Just my opinion.
To be fair mate your dealer doesn’t keep koi. They get the fish in and they are all mainly sold within a few months. We have got the hard job of keeping them. It’s always a fighting battle when they are tosai. Most of the time it’s if we are lucky. I don’t mess with my koi and I don’t put treatments in. I have in the past and lost load of fish but after 4 years I am on top of it now. You are more than welcome to come over to my channel to see my set up. Thanks Paul
trouble with keeping koi is every body is a expert and has there own opinion you have to find what works for you and your koi ive kept koi for over 30 years and for me i havnt treated my pond for years i purge my filters twice a day in summer once a day in winter clean my filters properly once a year and get in my pond once a year and clean the bottom drain as i say this works for me koi i really hardy if in healthy water gotta enjoy our hobby
I think you could be on to something mate .. you think back to years ago people did nt have all the treatment s test kits we have today Many used to just leave to get on with it and take a chance 👍👍👌

100% been flirting with it and want to sort of cover the whole lefy side if I can. I want to try and pop something like rope or tube down and fill the left side surface with pond plants. But I missed it this year really
@@koifishjohnny Hi Johnny. Hornwort is very good plant for oxygenating and balancing the water, its also non invasive .. It has no roots so can be thrown straight into the pond or can be placed in a container and held down with gravel/ pebbles. It will also help with controlling nutrients which cause algae and blanket weed. have a look at the Velda Overgrowing Mat which you might be able to adapt for your pond. good luck Aengus
@@aengusfoley6694 That mat is well interesting mate. I might have a look for the start of next year. And will look at hornwort too mate, cheers. Have a great day pal
Completely agree with everything both you and most of the messages say. I've a in ground pond enough filteration to keep the water at the parameters good, waterfall with bowl that contains alfagrog, the only thing that goes into my pond is declorinator and twice in 20years blanket weed clearer i believe the only reason i don't get problems with blanket weed is it doesn't get much direct sunlight lots of large plants around the perimeter gives shade the only downside of that is i never get temperature in the pond above 18c but fish still feed well look good and grow slowly. When you were going to put duck weed in pond container and many including myself told you about the spread here's a thought in my waterfall basin i grow water cress. Gwen 🧓
