@@jizz5373 I don't know actually. I finished Gintama a couple weeks ago, and I actually think Jirocho is just better than him. Enraged Gintoki is just as good as calm Gintoki. If anything, he's at his best when he's enraged. Part of what makes him fight in a way that he's called Shiroyasha is his spirit. Everytime we've seen him mad, or take a fight as personally as this one, he's overcome impossible odds (at least until he fought Jirocho). His rage is another fuel for his will, which fuels his ferocity. Besides, he did make a strategic decision in the fight, disabling dominant arm. Granted, Gintoki did win their final duel though, so I don't know. But he didn't use his bokuto for that. He used a real sword.

I know this is a late reply but to answer your question he's already familiar with Utsuro's fighting style since gintoki is with him ever since he was a kid. Second Jirocho is a beast on his own and he's comparable to Gintoki and third, Gintoki's rage is a blind rage, Gintoki is much stronger when he's calm and collected.
Like real life. What would you choose to do majority of the time ? Gintoki chooses to goof off with his friends. But when someone threatens his friends The show changes... A lot
I initially tried watching Gintama and it felt so stupid. Like the first episodes spoke without introduction as if the viewer knew everyone. Maybe I started at a bad point, but I was certain it was episode 1. I dropped it two episodes in because it wasn't funny, but if it has badass moments like this, I'll give it another try.
You should always look into what you're watching. First 2 episodes are special episodes to celebrate the anime adaptation. After that, it's the proper start.
The first and two episodes were to celebrate the manga in being adapted into anime. The third episode is the real introduction to the anime. Yeah, for the early part of Gintama, the jokes didn't land well and the series was still trying to find it bearings. But believe me, past around 50 episodes or so, the jokes are getting better and you will throw your guts off laughing but at the same time you would cry at the sudden punch to the gut backstories of some of the side characters. Gintama is one of those shows that it might seem like a total chaos in the beginning but managed to actually put the stories in a well put manner and capable in introducing in the most memorable main and side characters that always being prevalent throughout the story.
And don't worry, there are so many people like you that dropped it in the beginning but they picked it up back and managed to watch until the last movie and each and everyone of them doesn't want this anime to end because how much the characters speak to their souls with genuine life lessons and heartfelt connection. If only I could erase my memories to experience this anime from the beginning until the end all over again, I would like to have the adventure again watching the journey of the cast of Gintama. So if you ever want to pick it up back, just watch it at your own pace and if there's episode that you feel like too slow for you, do like what I did by skipping that episode and move on to the next one until you feel like you want to come back to the episode to find if you missed anything.
He shouldn't have lost like this. This crap doesn't make sense. I'd have praised if there was even a bit of logic behind this but nope. The old dude had punching force of Superman or something. It'd have been awesome to see Gintoki losing because of lack of experience against the old man.

Aside from _ (not gonna spoil the name) and Oboro, Gintoki probably has the third most experience in fights (excluding non-human characters like Umiibozu, Kamui, and Hosen.) He literally grew up on the battlefield killing for survival, was taught by Shoyo, and fought in the Joi War (while making a name for himself as the White Demon.) He also fought Hosen and Jiraia before this (both of whom are stronger than Jirocho.) Experience is the least of his worries in a fight.
