I'm going to go one step further and say that Nintendo lied about dynamic lighting making it impossible to implement a sunset. The thing about dynamic lighting is this - you're not baking your lighting and shading into your textures, you're actively simulating light beam tracing. Which means your light source can move and you can dynamically adjust its color temperature and luminosity on the fly. And sure, the Switch probably can't handle something like the thousands of simultaneous iterations that you get with RTX raytracing or the "brute force" method used by commercial renderers like Iray or EEVEE, but it can still handle enough iterations to do basic dynamic effects like that - after all, that's what it's doing normally.

It's funny watching this video when the Mario Kart Wii community has expanded into Wiimmfi and online play is STILL possible 16 years after the game's release. There is literally a MKWii mod out there that has ALL the retro tracks (DONE BETTER THAN BCP) from SNES to 3DS plus a couple Wii U and Tour (Retro Rewind).
the biggest crime nintendo comitted with the bcp was that they added new tracks and characters, but not new vehicle parts despite having fucking hundreds of them in tour, and god knows that the one thing MK8 lacks is kart variety

Like, 2023 me saying Funky Kong has a higher chance of being in the roster than either Diddy Kong or Pauline simply because Nintendo would want to add the "Mario Kart Wii guy" so they could pander to all of the Mario Kart Wii fans as much as possible... I think I have been onto something with that one.

So like hear me out, Yoshi Circuit is a top 20 track. Not because it's shaped like a yoshi, but because of how good that layout is, plenty shortcuts among that can be taken shroomless if you are good enough at the game, a somewhat challenging layout, and the uniqeness of the layout compared to other Circuit tracks.
God this community sure is SOMETHING. I recorded my tier list back in December of last year because I got insanely tired of half-assed, bare-bones takes based not even remotely on evidence and although the continued oversaturation has pushed me to improve as a creator in more ways than I ever expected. In the world of track design, there genuinely is so much to talk about, but instead most people aren't MANIACS like me who put 1k+ hours into this game to tell you the nuance of how every single one of these tracks plays. I wanted to make the first tier list that uses careful observation and experience to really see what each of these tracks do for the game balance-wise, but at this point I can't help but wonder if I'm just another "so-called free thinker" who's contributed to this oversaturation.
In my other comment, I mentioned that Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed introduced the concept of dynamic tracks to the kart racing genre. Thing is, SEGA got it right the first time, and when Nintendo tried to copy it with the city tracks from Tour they screwed up big time. You see, with SEGA's implementation, the track _actively_ changes. For example, Sky Sanctuary crumbles around you as the race goes on, almost like Grumble Volcano actually, though the slowly crumbling track actually changes the route you take through the structures rather than simply adding more hazards. But then on the third lap, the entire course has fallen apart and now you're in flight mode for the third lap following the route of first lap except for where the course would go inside the sanctuary structures. And these changes to the structure of the course make it physically impossible to get lost. Nintendo could have followed this example (to a less dramatic degree) and made it so that roadblocks start to appear along the course or draw bridges open to block off the road, while things clear up in other areas to reveal new routes. But instead they just used arrows.
Well this wasnt what i expected to watch when i first clicked on the video. I'm a "competitive" time trialer across the entire series and when i saw "96 track rankings" in the thumbnail i thought you were gonna talk about the fiasco of the community trying to figure out how to expand their time trial rankings for all the new tracks and all the controversy that came from the balance patches in waves 4 and 5 that fundamentally changed the entire meta™. Still i really enjoyed listening to this and getting a slightly more casual? take on things? I mean, all of us in the communities were gunning for our own tracks to make it and hating on tour just like everyone else but you did bring up some points I didn't think about. Also i was an early alpha tester for Tour and WOW i did not like that game and haven't given it another chance since. I might be wrong but I'm okay with that! Great video, makes me want to get back to karting content again myself.
idk, I'm happy just being oblivious to all the drama and enjoying the new tracks, maybe discussing it with my friends I feel like you're probably just gonna make yourself miserable if you're constantly fighting with people about this stuff (although, i can't speak for everyone, some probably enjoy the discourse but tbh I would rather stay out of it)
When I got the Wii back in 2007 or whatever, I used motion steering for probably 3 years before my friend came over and asked why I wasn’t using a nunchuck😂 didn’t even know that was an option
This is a really well made video, in my opinion, I personally think that the BCP hype cycle is just a more tame version of Smash Ultimate's hype cycle in terms of speculation, and honestly I can't wait to see what's in store for the future of Mario Kart!
It's kinda funny. Nintendo goes on and on about not being able to do anything new with F-Zero, yet it's Mario Kart that's becoming stale. Granted, that's partially because F-Zero hasn't had a new game (not counting 99 which is just a 99 player battle royal version of the SNES game for the most part) since Climax, but if you look at games like Aero GPX and XF eXtreme Formula there are definitely fresh directions that F-Zero can be taken in and that's not including the possibility of expanding the custom vehicle options first introduced in the F-Zero X expansion kit and later used in GX into a full-on CAC based campaign. Meanwhile, the most significant innovation we've had in the kart racing genre in the past decade wasn't even in a Mario Kart game, and that's the dynamically changing tracks of Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed.
As someone whose been rather critical of Mario Kart fans since the BCP era, largely in part to how much of it reminded me of the god awful Fighters Pass era albeit not as bad, I think this is a great video. However it doesn't address one of my personal concerns, which is with the characters. You nailed the discourse over tracks perfectly fine, but the discourse over the roster... I witnessed firsthand Mario Kart fans adopting some of the same arguments as Smash fans. For example, any time someone puts Geno on their roster, they get hit with the argument "nobody cares about Geno" which is an argument that only started because Geno got revealed as a Mii Costume in Ultimate. Heck any time the RPG characters, be it Geno, Fawful, or Vivian, are put on someone's fake roster period it's hit with waves of harassment from what I've seen. Like sure some people claim to fix the roster, but others are just making their own fun what ifs and getting put on blast for it. I personally don't like gatekeeping, so even though these characters aren't likely anytime soon I don't think there's a reason to constantly force the idea they'll never happen. When it comes to these roster what ifs, largely from the "I fixed it" crowd, there's also arguments over which characters count as filler and which don't, like for some reason some people see it fine to have Baby Mario and Luigi, but not the Koopalings and they get really heated about it, often making their only compromise to make them alts of Jr. like in Smash even though they all have completely different weight classes and body shapes. It's a whole mess really, especially when the Nintendo Kart discussion gets involved, which I'm personally very against.
nice video, you covered the discourse perfectly! as a diehard MKWii fan i was hoping for a few more tracks in other games, but at the end of the day they're mario kart tracks and i'm gonna play them anyway lol
Regarding the pre-DS/Wii era, check out Geek Critique's video, Mario Kart Double Dash: Losing the Narrative. It's not the main focus but it talks about the community opinion of Double Dash, 64, and Super at the time.
If MKWii = Melee, then MK8DX = Ultimate. There is a lot of beloved content from the franchise but the "sanity" of the game's basic handling makes it bland to me.
The current state of the Mario Kart community isn't too surprising, given the state of most online fandoms in the modern day. Just look at Pokemon or Star Wars.
I clicked off of this video because of the first part around the time it dropped and nine days later I'm clicking back on it and realizing that it was a bit 😭
So my 2 cents on the DLC courses and packs: 1) I was extremely disappointed with the art direction and visual quality of the added tracks. They give a toy feel from Tour that is objectively a lower quality. The fact that there isn't a consistent art direction is also unappealing. Not to mention, I dont like the fact that the added tracks also took a hit gameplay-wise that doesn't resemble the courses in their original games (minus Tour. Tours' gameplay just sucks). 2) Regarding the point about the number of Wii tracks and the Wii focus: I think it has to do with MKWii, in the current year, still having a massive modding and competitive scene. And I guarantee Nintendo hates that fact, and they desperately want to move those players to MK8 Deluxe. But due to the gameplay of modern MK, those players will not budge. The quality of the added Wii tracks is also not convincing them. And tbh, the only Mario Kart content I watch is from MKWii. Any time I do watch MK8 gameplay, I feel like im going to have a seizure from the item spam and the visuals of the tracks.
Nintendo doesn’t give a sh*t about mkwii players LMAO. Why attract like 3000 people when you can appeal to casuals and gain millions? Most casuals (the major selling point) don’t care about the track’s visuals and just want some extra content, so Nintendo doesn’t really need to try at all.
@@madrid_drive_enjoyer advertising? Sell more consoles? Maybe they don't care. But I guarantee they would rather you spend money and attention on their current systems and games rather than an old game from the 2000s.
@@asadburden1621 Very sorry for the aggression, I’m just tired of people saying Nintendo actually cares about their older games and whoever plays them. It’s just wrong because if they DID care, well RIP mkwii community.
But i love Peachette, Rosalina Ice World, Shroom Ridge, Daisy Circuit and Wii's classic controller, come on. >:( On Mario Kart Tour, say what you want on that game but i really love seeing characters in different costumes though and i like the city tracks.
I had fun with some of the Booster Course Pass like a few tracks (Ninja Hideaway, Sydney Sprint, Yoshi's Island, GCN Waluigi Stadium and SNES Bowser's Castle 3 quickly became some my favorites) and the banger of an OST it has, I will 100% admit that this DLC was pretty bad. It feels like Nintendo had no idea what they were doing and just threw a hunch of Tour stuff in a blender, hoping for a good outcome.
I mean, I had fun doing my track rankings without the impact of other's influences during the process. After viewing one 96 ranking video, I was more like: I should probably not watch any more until I actually do my own so external bias doesn't change my opinions midway through! lol In the end, as long as you're having fun ranking what you love just as a cool exercise, isn't that the point? :)
Fun fact: If you include the games' respective retros, Mario Kart 7 actually had one more track return somewhere in Mario Kart 8 than Mario Kart Wii. Mario Kart 7 had 16 tracks come back while Wii had 15. Sorry Wii stans
A bit late but I don’t know man, there are plenty of tracks in Deluxe that are worse than Toad Circuit. I would go as far as to say that Toad Circuit is not even a bottom 10 track is you have courses such as Sky High Sundae, Toad’s Turnpike, N64 Rainbow Road, Baby Park, Excitebike Arena, Kalamari Desert, Mute City, Choco Mountain, Rock Rock Mountain, Tokyo Blur, and Paris Promenade.
I kind of feel like Nintendo is including tracks people don't really remember to try and make them like them, so they don't eventually run out of fan favourite tracks and just have junk left over. "Shroom Ridge! You remember that don't you? You loved that track back in the day, of course you did!".
DID YOU JUST SAY DS TRACKS ARE NOT AL GOOD?? neighter are wiis id argue ds tracks selection is better airship fortess, ticktock clock, dk pass, bowsers castle, peach gardens
Am I the ONLY person who actually thinks Peachette is cool? They didn't need to give her unique voice lines, they could have just reused Peach, yet they made her sound slightly more like Toadette anyway. Nobody appreciates her. :(
Man, this Grin guy is really collaborating with Twink Golden Freddy (aka that loser Golden)? This has got to be your worst yet..

What makes you think it's NOT gonna be in 9/10/X/ whatever the next game is
fundamentally WHAT!?
38:31 This part legit caught me so off guard I almost spat out the food I was eating
Wait, thats this guys actual voice and not just a hyper self aware yet cringe parody of children? Eww
Is that your golden Freddy sona
why, I’m flattered!
I think you’re the second person that compared my character to Golden Freddy.
The booster pass looks like shit compared to base game yall can forgive it but I will never
So my 2 cents on the DLC courses and packs:
1) I was extremely disappointed with the art direction and visual quality of the added tracks.
@@asadburden1621 No sh*t. Plus Nintendo’s inactivity in mkwii is the reason CTGP and the modding community is thriving so be grateful for that
@madrid_drive_enjoyer why are you disagreeing with me and being so hostile then?
@@asadburden1621 Very sorry for the aggression, I’m just tired of people saying Nintendo actually cares about their older games and whoever plays them. It’s just wrong because if they DID care, well RIP mkwii community.
I main Mii outfit A in mkwii, even on online.
41:03 made me die in laughter
But i love Peachette, Rosalina Ice World, Shroom Ridge, Daisy Circuit and Wii's classic controller, come on. >:(
On Mario Kart Tour, say what you want on that game but i really love seeing characters in different costumes though and i like the city tracks.
I love Mario Kart :)
But seriously, there was no reason Airship Fortress should not have been included.
It feels like Nintendo had no idea what they were doing and just threw a hunch of Tour stuff in a blender, hoping for a good outcome.
didnty talk about bagging smh
3:40 scott the woz?
Your not the only one who loves super circuit
26:24 THATS WHAT IM SAYING
As someone who did a 96 track ranking, this vid is 100% right ngl
Don’t be hating on the DS tracks
I mean, I had fun doing my track rankings without the impact of other's influences during the process. After viewing one 96 ranking video, I was more like: I should probably not watch any more until I actually do my own so external bias doesn't change my opinions midway through! lol In the end, as long as you're having fun ranking what you love just as a cool exercise, isn't that the point? :)
13:09
Ay, I’m playing the Delta emulator right now!
Fun fact: If you include the games' respective retros, Mario Kart 7 actually had one more track return somewhere in Mario Kart 8 than Mario Kart Wii. Mario Kart 7 had 16 tracks come back while Wii had 15. Sorry Wii stans
Now rank every Mario Kart Live Home Circuit track
How
Wh… what..?
R.I.P Piranha plant pipeline
It may be bastardized in Tour, but I am still very salty Airship Fortress was omitted from the BCP over DS Mario Circuit.
Moral of the story: If you rank Toad Circuit above 96th on your MK8 course ranking, may god have mercy on your soul
Up theirs
A bit late but I don’t know man, there are plenty of tracks in Deluxe that are worse than Toad Circuit. I would go as far as to say that Toad Circuit is not even a bottom 10 track is you have courses such as Sky High Sundae, Toad’s Turnpike, N64 Rainbow Road, Baby Park, Excitebike Arena, Kalamari Desert, Mute City, Choco Mountain, Rock Rock Mountain, Tokyo Blur, and Paris Promenade.
super circuit is awesome
also piranha plant pipeline deserved better
Bradtendo seems to be my type of guy

New sub, plz do more vids like this 😂🔥🔥
I kind of feel like Nintendo is including tracks people don't really remember to try and make them like them, so they don't eventually run out of fan favourite tracks and just have junk left over. "Shroom Ridge! You remember that don't you? You loved that track back in the day, of course you did!".
Rosalina Iceworld is not mediocre >:(
What is that song you use in the outro?
Hot take: I absolutely fucking hate Koopa Cape
@Brad766- sexiest Pokémon?
Still waiting for mariokart Wii 2 to come out
Y’all should take a look into the geometry dash community LOL
I personally have had a pretty rough experience with this fanbase, so IDK, but it seemed kinda chromosome heavy
DID YOU JUST SAY DS TRACKS ARE NOT AL GOOD?? neighter are wiis id argue ds tracks selection is better airship fortess, ticktock clock, dk pass, bowsers castle, peach gardens
I dont disagree w the teirlist but i dont disagree either
$25 dollers?????????? Glad I passed
Haha, funny racing game go brrrrr
Am I the ONLY person who actually thinks Peachette is cool? They didn't need to give her unique voice lines, they could have just reused Peach, yet they made her sound slightly more like Toadette anyway. Nobody appreciates her. :(
