I am absolutely here for the ongoing saga of Samanthony finally having a supportive adult in her life and the adult not having a clue what to do. Good concept for a novel, honestly, I would totally read a book about this.

I tried writing a story where the chosen one's parents aren't dead. 50k words in, I put it aside for later. Tough.
Yeah for younger characters it’s really hard to figure out why their parents would stop them from going on the QUEST it so much easier when their just not a problem
I have one novel where a twelve-year-old with kind of extreme magic powers just told her mom "I'm going to (place), and you can't stop me, because what are you going to do?" They got into a horrible fight and both felt bad about it for a long time, but it worked.

I guess you basically have to chase them up a tree so the only option is to quest. The parents don't like it and will help when they can but also the chosen one explodes if the mystery is unsolved.
Or I guess you can make the chosen one not tell their parents for a similar reason. The parents would be in danger, they don't trust the parents, maybe they have a reason to believe their parents are in with the bad guys.
Lastly you could keep the parents in the dark. Imagine magic as a secret and the parents aren't in on it. The chosen is invited in to learn and quest and they can't tell their parents so they can talk about things as if it's a normal school experience with them but not about the secret parts. And that tension in there relationship is interesting

I think that might only qualify if you're in the Fae realm. Not sure the rules concerning food from the Fae realm that's been brought to the human realm
Right!! I was watching along like "aww that's a sweet gift" with something tingling in the back of my ear that something was wrong. Then "courtesy of Thad the Fay..." while holding the apple made my heart DROP! "NO! Don't eat that!!"
@@Amy_the_Lizard In terms of eating their food specifically, yeah, but the underlying concept is that for magical reasons it is impossible for a human to violate Fae etiquette, and that etiquette dictates that all gifts and favors, no matter how small, must be repaid. The fun thing about that is that in many stories it works both ways and makes them easy to extort if you're clever enough, because they can't ignore their debt to you either.
Time moves more slowly for the Fairy Realms. If you eat their food it puts you in sinc with their Realm's time. If you try to return to your own Realm you will eaither turn to dust, or rapidly age (it depends on how much time has passed in your Realm).
That's why you don't eat their food.
I love that the Dad is completely baffled by this whole magical world but is still adamant on helping his kids and their friends to make sure they're safe and get what they need.
Also love the idea of the kids getting set up for super trope-y plotlines, like running away from vampires as an obvious setup to have a climactic battle in the next town, then the Dad just steps in like "Nope. No. Not doing that. I appreciate what you're going through sweety but that's a Bad Idea and we're gonna do something that actually keeps you safe, m'kay?" It's like his complete lack of fore knowledge of YA tropes is his superpower that lets him just instantly spot the obvious solution.
Also-also love that even if he low-key thinks his kids' magical nonsense is silly he still supports and loves them and does what he can to help them out. Unironically, as someone who's had very mixed experiences with father figures, this series is very cathartic in letting me see what a decent dad ought to be like, and experience some of that positive influence vicariously. Would love to see some clips of him just chilling out and having a good time with the kids.
This has, in roughly two days, shot up to one of my absolute favourite things on TH-cam

I was very very young during those vampire hunting trips and didn't really know what was going on... thought vampires weren't real and grandpa was a bit odd, turns out he knew things 😅

Woaw, just discovered the serie yesterday night and binged watched it. I was a fan of greek mythology when I was a teen so naturally my grandma's christmas gifts for years were Percy Jackson, so nice to enjoy it in a new way, so much more appealing as an adult ! I'm having a lot of fun here, thanks a lot for all the amazing criticism of YA parenthood 😂
