What makes Janet Baker so mesmerizing a performer is that she has no desire to show herself off but rather makes herself a perfect instrument for expressing the music.
I met Ms Baker at the 1968 or 1969 Aldeburgh festival in England. As I remember, she was singing at a county church, as the festival hall in Snape had burnt down. It was sweltering in the church, so many people retreated to the church grounds during intermission. Ms Baker circulated amongst the throng, and stopped to chat with the (English) people I was with. They introduced me to her; she was very gracious-a lovely lady and a consummate artist. Thank you for providing this wonderful video.
Stunning.....She is at her best with the quieter moments ......the last "reviens ma bien aimee" is so touching. I have an old vinyl disk (that I would need to dig for) of her singing (maybe with Barbirolli) with the twitches and secondary noises of the orchestra giving less distraction to the beautiful voice.
Janet Baker is one of the very rare singers to have such variety of repertoire. Here she deploys an immensely deep emotion which her voice rends very well with a deep comprehension of the French text. Her sense of phrasing and legato are of rare beauty, always towards music in one of most amazing compositions by Berlioz. With intensity and integrity she conceives music and poems as a complete entity and incorporates every possible detail. Her musical accents are so intelligent & emotional that makes this performance exceptional, especially due to the poor literacy poems by Gautier. Thank you for posting this wonderful video (especially since it is a much better rendering than her studio recording)
Why should this be faster and more detatched? The whole song is a pleading for the return of the beloved. I doubt we'll hear many comparable or superior readings for some decades if ever.

sorry to leave a negative comment, she sounds beautiful and her words are very clear! but I just tried to IPA this for diction and a lot of things were wrong, plus she said "montagnes" twice instead of "campagnes" but we all make mistakes :]
