    • @catguy4996

      @Amit Prabhu Dumbledore is supposed to be mostly a calm, old wizard. Richard Harris... this amazing man even had a voice that is *exactly* how J.K Rowling imagined Dumbledore's voice to be. Also, Richard Harris was quite capable of showing Dumbledore's "powerful" side. Look at how he bellows "SIIILENCE" in the Philosopher's Stone. Yes, Richard Harris was the man. Also, Richard Harris would've made Dumbledore's death much more depressing.
      Michael Gabmon however, he just ruined Dumbledore. He was so rubbish at acting anything like Dumbledore. Hell, Micheal Gabmon didn't even have much of an idea about Dumbledore's character. Partly because he didn't read the books. Michael Gabmon would be more fitting for Gandalf.
      Most of the Harry Potter cast were "bloody brilliant". But Micheal Gabmon just didn't cut it for most fans.

      And how am I mentally retarded? I read the books. Yes, I did. And Dumbledore is mostly a calm old man. Ask literally any Harry Potter fan, let alone J.K Rowling. Now Dumbledore doesn't have that much "action" scenes in the first two Harry Potter films, which is why Richard Harris remains calm. But Richard Harris had proven that he can be energetic sometimes, as shown in the scene of the Halloween feast in the Philosopher's Stone. So he could very well easily be an aggrivated Dumbledore when necessary.
      But in the books, even at dark times, Dumbledore is still mostly calm. Yes, he is. Even at the end of the Order of the Phoenix, when a lot of shit has just gone down, Dumbledore is still a calm old man in the books. So I don't know where you got the idea that Dumbledore is more aggrivated.
      You're the one who doesn't know shit. Your other reply somewhere else in this comment section just proves that you're truly the one who has a brain of a toddler. And you need fucking help!

    To those people who think Richard Harris wouldn't be capable of showing Dumbledore's "powerful" side:
    Remember in the Philosopher's Stone? The way Richard Harris as Dumbledore bellowed "SIIILENCE!" It was perfect. I can definitely imagine Richard Harris doing very well as Dumbledore in the later Harry Potter films.

    BOOK 1 CH 1: "His blue eyes were light, bright and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twice." THIS IS DUMBLEDORE. Gentle and thoughtful on the surface, but brilliant, clever, and perceptive underneath. He never yelled in the books. He didn't have to. Just his presence with his soul piercing eyes were enough to silence a room.

  • @thelouisfanclub
    @thelouisfanclub 9 ปีที่แล้ว +185

    But in all seriousness... both actors have their defects. Dumbledore is an immensely complex character - probably the most in the whole book. He is a bad ass fighter, a shrewd manipulator, but also cultivates a cutie pie grandpa persona (which may be partly put on, but only partly. I mean, he really does love sherbert lemons and making zany inappropriate comments at odd moments).
    His true personality hadn't been revealed in the first books so we have no idea how Richard harris would have gone on to portray him in the future.
    Gambon has his merits but I just don't think he was subtle enough. Yes, plenty of people were afraid of Dumbledore, but it wasn't because he went around shouting and slamming doors.

      You mean Harris isn't as pompous?
      The best issue raised I read on another site was that they would have a hard time imagining Harris locked in battle.
      because he's too old but I don't know what they are referring too.
      Besides if special effects and imaginative directing can make Steven Segal seem like he's still a fit martial arts master why couldn't they have done the same for Harris. Its fiction its not like there is "magic" so Harris could be written to be able to do anything, they would just have to draft the effects. I'm okay with either.

    • @jebstuart1475
      @jebstuart1475 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not the point its an academic issue of who was the better Dumbydork.
      The argument I mentioned is pure "what if" Harris had lived a couple of more years would he have been able to play a more physical role if he was alive. My point is you can take an almost dead actor and make him look good with special effects. Or make an over the hill to fat to move martial artists look good by framing the shots so the enemy dudes are doing all the action. If Harris had been alive for another episode or two they could have made him look up to the part. But in all fairness I did not know where the guy who brought it up was getting his idea from. I don't remember the other DD did much requiring a physical role.
      Its an interesting question because Stalone canceled Rambo 5 because he got more attention doing the Creed movie without a lot of physical prep and Rambo would take a lot of physical prep but because he does the part.

      Nah. Even in the later books, to me Dumbledore was still the embodiment of calm and and wisdom, regardless of the seriousness of the situations they were in. Harris wasn't able to show how he would portray a serious Dumbledore but I think he would've killed it. As Dan L rightly said Gambon was way too over dramatic and hyper and with that he lost this aura of wisdom and silent power that would've made me truly believe that he was the only wizard that Voldemort feared.

      Why do people think Harris wouldn't be capable of filming as the story got darker? It is a stupid assumption, Dumbledore never really lost his cool in the books, except during the cave potion. Also, Dumbledore didn't need to be an athlete to duel. They didn't make justice with that battle in Order of the Phoenix, the battle in the book was way better and detailed. Even Harry and his friends had a more interesting adventure in the Ministry in the books than in the film version.

    Yes Michael Gambon was terrible. He even said in a interview that he just reads his lines and thats it. No thought or anything behind them. Where as, when I see Harris version of Dumbledore, you can see the pain in his eyes. You can see that he holds many secrets and there is a lot he is not telling harry. Every word is controlled and thought out, Gambon turns Dumbledore into a street hippy who is flying by the seat of his pants. I laugh whenever I see Dumbledore throttle Harry in goblet of fire. Because I think of one of my favourite scenes from order of the phoenix (the book) that wasnt in the film. Where after the batltle in the department of mysteries. Harry freaks out and starts smashing alot of dumbledores posessions. and dumbledore says "by all means, destroy my posessions, but I must warn you, I have many". When I think of how Gambon would have played this scene, he probably would have thrown harry across the room or knocked him out.

      In the book scene you mentioned from "The Order of the Phoenix," the quote from Dumbledore is, "By all means, continue destroying my possessions. I daresay I have too many."
      And the remarkable thing is that it's Prof. Dumbledore's implacable serenity that actually sets Harry off in the first place. Harry snaps when Dumbledore calmly tells him he understands how he's feeling, because judging by his serene demeanor, Harry is sure he can't possibly understand the agony of guilt he's suffering.
      No wonder they never put that scene in the film, after having portrayed Dumbledore like little more than a stressed and freaked-out parent in the GOF, virtually the antithesis of his actual character.

    • @drakenfist
      @drakenfist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      HopeUnquenchable very well put!. The thing is Dumbledore as the head of Hogwarts has to be switched on and alert, he carries his cards close to his vest. Sure his has doubts, he had many when it came to his plan of leaving Harry with the Dursleys in hopes that Harry grow up normal instead of spoilt and famous all his life, but he doesn't doubt or go off the rails that bad!. In my mind if THIS Dumbledore run hogwarts, the school would be closed LONG AGO. He is so agitated and paranoid he would just be a loose canon. If any student got in to a fight this dumbledore would be more likely to punch the kid in the head.

      @rachaelschilling6471 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      " In discussing his portrayal of Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series, Gambon has given detailed accounts. Particularly, he was quoted as saying that when portraying Dumbledore, he does not necessarily "have to play anyone". He further states, "I just stick on a beard and play me, so it's no great feat. I never ease into a role - every part I play is just a variant of my own personality. I’m not really a character actor at all." This suggests that Gambon chooses to act his performance based on his own intuitive interpretations of how a character would respond to certain situations. In short, Gambon has not deliberately aimed to follow the specific characteristics of Dumbledore, as referenced in the books, but rather developed an acting style in which he combines his own personality with that of his character."
      I pulled this from an interview with Gambon I think he was an amazing Dumbledore

    Richard Harris was brilliant, you could tell he cared about the part, took his time with it and researched the role between himself and Harry.. Whenever you watch the scenes between Harris's Dumbledore and Harry, you can tell they have that father/mentor relationship as described in the books. While Michael Gambon is a great physical Dumbledore, I really never got that special bond the two characters had, and every time I watched him, even the scenes where he wasn't, it always felt like he was angry at Harry. It's a shame Richard Harris had to leave us so early, 1 & 2 will always be my favorites.

    If I had to describe Dumbledore, I would say he is a very old and wise man but with the spirit of a young man. He was calm and cheerful, the kind of person who would plop down next to a student on the floor and offer them sweets. At the same time he was a powerful and commanding presence who strikes fear into Voldemort himself.
    The thing about Dumbledore is that he never loses his cool and you would never guess he was so powerful until you see him in action. Book Dumbledore can be terrifying without shouting and waving his hands around angrily like Gambon does and it's much more impactful that way because you are taken off guard.
    Richard Harris manages to capture that kind grandfatherly nature that Dumbledore has as well as being able to come off as serious and powerful without having to shout all the time. Unfortunately, due to his age and illness, he was unable to fully capture Dumbledore's youthful nature and probably wouldn't have been able to do so well later on when things got intense.
    Gambon on the other hand, while being able to retain this youthful nature that book Dumbledore had, he completely ruined this by acting like a short tempered, aggressive politician who doesn't get his way. Gambon uses shouting and anger to try and convey a sense of power but it makes him look weak and unsubtle compared the the real Dumbledore who was scarily composed in every situation. To make matters worse, Gambon never even read the book and dismissed it completely, opting to just act how he thinks a headmaster would act rather than how Dumbledore would act. A part of me blames the direction on this however because they could have simply told him how to act rather than let him loose. Alan Rickman, despite never reading the book, actually tried to act like Snape and paid respect to the character rather than try to make his own character.

      Gambon shows the very human side of dumbledore, Harris was almost too calm and mystical to really show the infallible side of dumbledore, this video was definitely biased and didn’t show his incredible acting. He is an extremely talented actor, being one of the original members of the Royal national theatre. He was even knighted for his acting skills. The director was mostly at fault for that scene in the goblet of fire. Apart from that one scene, Gambon showed more of the complexities of dumbledore.

    The fact that Harris, who cared for the character deeply enough to continue in the role despite serious illness during the filming of Chamber of Secrets, was succeeded by a man who cared so little about doing justice to the original story or to Harris's potrayel of Dumbledore, that he apparently never even bothered to read the books, is truly sad.

    • @godriczimmerman
      @godriczimmerman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      ***** Its my honest opinion, and i couldn't care less if you think it is disrespectful. To me, Gambons performance was atrociously bad. It hardly resembled the Dumbledore i know from the books at all. Its all well and good to have artistic license to tweak the character here and there, but when the character being portrayed becomes unrecognizable because of your changes, then you know you've gone too far. I already knew Alan Rickman was an incredible actor, but if he didnt read the books and still managed to remain so faithful to Snapes original character, then he's even greaster than i thought.

    • @JTinGR
      @JTinGR 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      The Dumbledore you "know from the books" is only in your head. Everyone comes away with a different perception of a character when reading a story. Just because yours is different from others, it doesn't mean that the portrayal of Dumbledore by Gambons was bad.

    • @godriczimmerman
      @godriczimmerman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      JTinGR If everyone comes away with a different view of a character, with most views being contrary to the authors intentions, it must be a very poorly written character indeed. Thankfully, Dumbledore from the Harry Potter book series is not one of these, and his distinct personality comes through clearly in every scene he's in.

    • @miguellorenzo3726

    • @cadenza23
      @cadenza23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      JTinGR there are specific things that he did that were exactly contrary to things explicitly stated in the books. For example the line “Harry, did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire” was to be “said calmly.” Not “HERRY DIDYA PUTYA NEM INDAGOBLAFIYA??????” Stuff like that happened constantly, which just made it painstakingly obvious that not only had Michael Gambon not read the books, but he clearly did not know the character of Dumbledore at all.

    For me - Richard Harris will forever be 'Dumbledore' He personified Dumbledore as JK described him in the books. He was soft spoken, showed a wisdom & caring for Harry that Gambon's version was unable to in the first few movies he portrayed Dumbledore. The way Gambon was dressed as Dumbledore made me laugh. Wearing long dress robes, little hat, pulling the robes up when he walked/ran, his long fingernails were a turn-off. I liked him towards the end of the movies but I can see why JK said Dumbledore is gay. It was a dark day for HP fans when Richard Harris passed. His version was still the best ever.

    I hope you guys realize they're really the same person. If Harris was alive, and had played Dumbledore for the whole series, he would have become rash and angry,and whatever you all think the other actor is. It just seems like Harris was more of a calmer person because Dumbledore's real personality wasn't revealed in the films Harris was in. If Harris was indeed a great actor, than he would have portrayed Dumbledore as the current actor displayed him, fierce and whatnot. That's my opinion.

    Richard Harris was Dumbledore, hands down. When I first saw that he wasn't playing DD in Prisoner of Azkaban I was furious, especially when I saw his replacement. Harris acted as Dumbledore, he was always calm (occlumens), and he even looked like the book drawings of DD. Gambon on the other hand yelled a lot, manhandled Harry during the Goblet of Fire scene, and was generally grumpy. DD never lost his cool, even when dealing with Crouch

    There was an interterview with gambon where he explained he saw no point in reading the books, he did it for the money, and just read the script as himself. When he read his scenes he came across as a grumpy old man, and yes credits to him in the fight scenes he came of as badass but not in a protective way like the books portrayed him as. With Harris he plays it with so much complexity with the qualities of an adoring grandfather, yet still a feirce one. Most say that they couldn't imagine him in the darker scenes that Dumbledore goes on to do, but we didnt give him the chance. Harris has played that kind of strong character before and i think he would have pulled it off. The thing that is annoying me the most is how little care Gambon had for the role in movies and fanbases built from pure joy from the series.

  • @X_A_ic
    @X_A_ic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The thing is, Dumbledore was NEVER supposed to be angry when fighting Voldemort. That's not how it's shown in the books, he never breaks the guise of a cool and collected wise old man. I think that's where Gambon made his mistakes, he shows too many varying states of emotion. Harris had it down perfectly.

    Michael Gambon played in the sad going movies, and made Dumbledore a less mad and more powerful. Only in the first two movies he got a little bid too much anger. In the last ones, exceptionally the 6th movie, he became calm, and started to go more like the book. His speech from Cedric Diggory made him stupid. Richard Harris however, showed calmth and peace. He was a great actor. But how would scenes like the "Big Escape from Dumbledore" or "Journey to the Cave" look like?
    They're both even great, but Harris a little more. It is difficult to replace Harris in the same character with a different person. I find this a very good choice since I had a Dumbledore in my head like him.

    I am great admirer of Gambon's creation. His outbursts of ire agree with air and situations. He shows powerfull but tired man, what makes him so human, true, and complex. But in the and of the day, in climax moments, in Ministry of Magic facing Voldemort, and on the top of Hogwarts tower facing deatheters he is the only truely calm being, knowing what he must, what he should, and what he will do. He is in control of himself, and therefore in control of situation. Gambon is one of the greatest movie assets.

    Richard Harris had the Yoda quality - the wise old master who was reserved, quirky and gentle despite possessing insane levels of power. He matched the novel description much better in appearance (beard, clothes, glasses) and mannerisms (calm, soft-spoken). Michael Gambon suited the style shift of the third movie, and although he works great in some of the more dramatic scenes it's at the loss of the mystique Harris always brought to the character. I have no idea who thought a standard gray robe and yellowish beard would be a good move for the character though, it made him seem like a hobo at times.

    The first two movies obviously had their dangers, but the movies that followed became increasingly dark. I thought Richard Harris was brilliants in the first two & portrayed Dumbledore perfectly. Even in the books, Dumbledore always made you question your thoughts because of how oddly calm he was. But books are different, they can have those certain elements & depths to them, whereas movies a little more complicated. Reading books means you have to completely open up your mind & imagine everything, as well benefiting from Harrys personal thoughts. When it comes to on-screen adaptions, what you see is what you get, its a little bit more complicated. From the book, we deduced that Harry was in constant danger but I personally never felt particularly worried about him. There was still an air of innocence to the books. It is sad that Harris passed away, but as for movie wise, I believe that Gambon's portrayal was essential to the franchise. His acting made me truly see why such a series as 'Harry Potter' could actually have been created for Adults.

    Looking back I get the feeling Harris played Nikolas Flamel, not Dumbledore.

    OK honestly, think that Richard Harris should be the one and only Dumbledore but, he died right after the second movie. On October Twenty - Fifth two thousand two. Then in two thousand three a new actor for the role of Dumbledore, known as Michael Gambon. Richard Harris is a calm, mellow, kindhearted, and loving actor. On the other hand, Michael Gambon is a stern , loud , and somewhat loving person. If I were to choose between Richard or Michael to be the one and only Dumbledore it would have to be .... drum role please. Do do do do do do! Richard Harris!!!!! OK back to the point. Now not to be on the DARK side, I just thought that Gambon is a very loud. Have you seen this man in the last six films. Now I'm watching the fifth movie and Mr. Malthoy is very persuasive..... not. Now to get back on the basis. So if you think Richard Harris is the BEST Dumbledore vote as many tallies as you want. Everyone who disproves do the same for Michael Gambon.

      I think Michael looks more like the strong, powerful and mighty Dumbledore who can defeat Voldemort

    My theory is that after Chamber of Secrets, Dumbledore used his magic to reduce his body's age by 10 years or so, coz he didn't want to die until AFTER he made sure Voldemort was finished. That's why he seems so much older when Richard Harris does it.

    I agreee, Harris was truly fit for the role. But I have to say, i was glad I didn't see Harris portray the cold and calculating Dumbledore in the final movies where he shows he didn't care as much for Harry as he had acted.

    I personally liked the Richard Harris version better. I think that he fits the book-version dumbledore better. I also liked how his words were very comforting like a parent or grand parent. When he says "it does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live" infront of the mirror of erised I always feel enchanted. It would have been fun to see what he could have done further on in the movies. I liked that he was a little more mysterious and in control.
    But Gambon made a clever choice by showing more emotion in his version of dumbledore since it was necessary as the series progressed.

    I feel like Gambon never bothered to read the books. My kids are 7 and 9 and they were appalled by his portrayal of Dumbledore - impatient, no subtlety, no twinkle in his eye. Dumbledore should not be shown flying off the handle - he was thoughtful and wise and almost god-like in his knowledge of what was going on and his restraint was such a fascinating part of his character - not reactionary and cranky like Gambon played him / was directed to play him. Gambon had zero warmth.

      Oh scrolling down people said he didn't read the books. Well - it shows in his portrayal - how lame!

      LOL you think gambon chose what to do? It was the 100% the director that told him to shout.
