Glad you enjoyed most of Na’vi River journey. I’ll pass that along to the team. We chose projected water in the Running Root scene as we call it for two reasons. The first is forced perspective. The waterfall is actually much closer to the ride vehicle than you think it is, but the scale of the projected water makes the feature appear much further distant. The second is running water is invisible under UV light. We used a very small amount of visible light to accent certain elements in the Canoe ride, but adding enough visible light to illuminate a water feature that large would foul the UV in that scene, as well as the ones before and after.

@Joe Cashman you should tell the team that they should paint all the dark ride ceilings with Vanta Black paint, that doesn’t allow light to hit. It would make the sky’s look much darker and harder to see. This could work for Pirates, The inside of the Mexican Pavilion, and other rides set at night and are inside

The Indiana Jones one really did blow my mind. It absolutely feels like the car moves backwards, and even though I've experienced that illusion in real life (parking the car just as the driver next to you starts to back out of their space & you slam on the brakes because you think your car didn't actually stop) I never would have guessed it was used to such fantastic effect on the ride.

I think one of my favorite mirror effects actually is sadly new defunct.. Just before you dispatch on Indiana Jones Adventure there is a large wall of mirrors on the left hand side of the tunnel. When the door segment actually worked, the mirrors would move on the side of the wall to disguise the room moving positions for the next vehicle. The mirrors still remain to this day, but no longer move since the door feature is in B mode permantley. I hope one day this gets fixed in a way that it can be returned to it's former glory, it was such a small detail not everyone noticed because it was when your seatbelts were being checked.

According to my Keys to the Kingdom tour guide, the metal thatching on the Tiki Room was because they couldn't find available/affordable authentic thatch artisans at the time (thatching has to be done to rigid and exacting standards to withstand the elements). When it came to creating Animal Kingdom, however, they were able to bring in real African thatch builders, and the roofs there are made of real straw thatch. It was pretty awesome to see her clang the metal "straw" of the Tiki Room roof, too.

I remember floating between the ship and the fort being mesmerized and wondering if we were going to be hit by a cannon ball. In fact my imagination went into overdrive when telling friends about it and I said one landed in the boat and we had to get get it out. I was only 4 or 5 so cut me a little slack please.

When I was last in DL, the Indiana Jones ride broke down while I was on it right as the ball got to the end of its movement. Lights came on and we sat there for 15 minutes or so. Was super cool to see things with the lights on, but also kinda strange to see how far the Boulder actually was, and to see Jones just dangling lifeless lol.
We also got a cool super fast pass for our trouble that worked in any ride any time. Wish I would have kept the FP, as I've not been able to find a picture anywhere, seems like they are rare.

im late to the party but a lot of the same effects are on monster's inc!! there are mirrors in the door room scene and the locker room/bathroom scene similar to those at 8:14 to make those rooms look bigger, and the randal animatronic that disappears and reappears in the bathroom is similar to that at 2:14 or at 16:55, except the mirror is angled so you dont see your own reflection, you only see the randal animatronic be lit from behind the glass. Also, there's an example of pepper's ghost with the "beauty and the beast" rose in Be Our Guest restaurant in florida and in the beast's library in animation academy in california adventure (both roses use the same effects, I believe. It's some glass with a projection of a rose and sparkles around it, plus a music cue). also in the beast's library in ca, the fire place uses a mirror and puts a projection?? screen?? animation?? of fire on the logs. I would love to say the same effect is at be our guest, but I cant entirely be sure (im not from florida lmao). great video explanation!!

In the Adventurers Club that used to be at Pleasure Island, they had a character named Beezle, a genie whose head appeared in a floating box in a cupboard. It was actually an actor sticking his head in from behind. The back of the cupboard was a mirror, which was actually larger than the cupboard, allowing the actor behind it to move it around without it looking like anything but the box was moving. Consequently, they had to keep the mirror as clean as possible so that the illusion couldn't be given away by a stain that moved with the box.

I remember being 10 years old and seeing 🧚 the Blue Fairy 🧚 wooden figure behind the scenes surrounded by mirrors and not the actual illusion 😅, on Pinocchio’s Daring Journey in Disneyland Paris, summer 2006.

So the question on the hitch hiking ghosts that never gets answered on how it's done is how they keep the ghosts synced to the speed of the doom buggies all day long. It's got to be an actual mechanical connection,

That makes so much more sense. As someone who has bartended in that lighting, i can verify that moving liquidof any kind has to be watched veeeery closely to be seen. Its why most bartenders just " count the pour"

    Two of my favorites:
Disney Tokyo Sea: the Shiriki Utundu idol disappearing right before your eyes on "The Tower of Terror".
Disneyland Paris: the shifting parallax scenery on the Ratatouille attraction.

I think the fake waterfall in Navi River Journey is to avoid extra noise. Even just a little water falling is really loud in an enclosed space.
Also, it reduces maintenance costs greatly as they don’t need an extra pump or plumbing.

At 10:19, I’ve more often heard it pronounced “SMELL-ih-tie-zurrs” with four syllables, with an unstressed “tie” located between the second and final unstressed syllables “ih” and “zurrs” - but they could be wrong and you right, I don’t know… I’ve never even seen it spelled! 🤷‍♀️

The Monsters Inc. rides use a lot of mirrors. The ending of the Ride & Go Seek with Boos door is NUTS how good it looks.
The stretching mirror in the Belle's enchanted encounter is also amazing.
As a magician, I would be remiss to not mention a cousin of the peppers ghost: The "Girl to Gorilla" illusion. Which uses two way mirrors and lighting to make things transform from one thing to another. Disney uses it a lot as well.

Story time: One day, I was having a great day at Magic Kingdom. The line for The Haunted Mansion was short, so my sister and I went on it. I have been on it many times, but this time, when we passed the floating candle, I loud boom sounded and jump-scared everyone, which was a very funny yet terrifying experience.

I got to ride on haunted mansion with the lights on years ago, I was so flabbergasted that there was this screen covering the whole ride. You would never notice it unless you knew it was there, now everytime I go on the ride I can’t unsee it

The giant Boulder traumatized me as a kid lol. My mom had said the Indiana Jones ride is like being in the theaters and just the seats move. I was like 5 or 6 years old back around 1996/1997. I went on and screamed when the Boulder came at me and shut my eyes. Then when I opened them everything was dark which made me freak out even more because I thought we had died 😂 never trusted my mom again.

I just called them to explain and my mom said “everything I know is a lie.” We thought the boulder was flat and the lights just made it look like it was rolling forward, never would have thought the WHOLE FREAKING HALLWAY MOVES

How did that waterfall get approved? The idea was to project the image onto an actual waterfall to give it an otherworldly appearance, but then some penny pincher in management said, "If we're using a projection then we don't need the actual waterfall. Water pumps are expensive and require maintenance."
    Pure speculation.

Rey from Rise of Resistance. Another MIRROR!!! It’s set above the guests eye level so you don’t see your own reflection and gives the illusion of depth. Her “hologram” is projected on the mirror.
