These are fabulous philosophies and great advice. I’ve been longarming for a shop for 3 years, and just got my new machines delivered so I’ll be breaking out on my own. I feel so blessed that I already have that passion. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!
glad you learned the insight in your 40s.! Took me until 62! Love your passion & love of sewing! I subscribed today although I know this is an older video. Great wisdom & a beautiful soul.
Thank you for your ideas. I am starting a quilting business but I am feeling a little shaken. Thanks for your words. I will listen to this video over and over ! 😊
Pam Bartels th-cam.com/video/QclrMzrI5yA/w-d-xo.html. Don’t be shaken if you do the work you will be successful.. you will make money and you will be ok.. just be patient and do the process.. if you do the work you will be ok!
Fantastic video Lorena. I agree with you on every point. Thanks for sharing. I am going to get back into my long arming business and selling my pieced quilts again. So true to do what you love and brings you joy.
Lorena, I wish I could just jump into your videos and give you a big HUG ! You have added so much to my life; especially. your "Victorious" video. Love you girl.
Lorena I've been watching several of your videos. You are great to watch, you have such a great personality. I'm just trying to start a longarm business and will take this info to heart. I love, love, love this. It scary to take a leap doing peoples quilts. Thank you!!
You make me feel like your my new best friend and we should go to lunch at least once a month. I am a fashion designer and I raised my children designing for others out of my home, so I know what you are talking about working alone. I don’t have girlfriends I hang around with, I don’t have time for that. Most women I know are not creative and they want me to entertain them or spend my day chitchatting and I don’t want to do that. I am a teacher, a minister, fashion designer, jewelry designer, a mother and a wife and I always have creative ideas in my head. I love what a great teacher and minister you are. By the way your videos do minister to people. God Bless you my Dear, keep up the great work you do. I am originally from San Antonio but live in Houston now. Blessing, Izzy Martinez.
A lot of good advice. My problem is that I have no idea what to charge for a quilt or how to make money in this business. I am a cancer survivor and would like to work from home doing this but intimated by the start up.
Theresa Vance Yes, the start up is high! You can buy a machine that is used they are a whole lot cheaper! You can make quilt tops where the client purchases the fabric and you build the top and then have them pay for the quilting! I know a lady who just does binding.. she loves to do it.. she charges $25 a quilt which is real cheap but another lady charges 65$ to do he binding on people's quilts!!! I know some lady's that make t-shirt quilt the client pays for fabric and asks for 1/2 up front so they don't lose any money for the time to make top.. there are ways to make money without having to purchase a Longarm.. I started with a small sewing machine and made bible covers .. I also would make wedding pillows.. I ended up making curtains too. I started making aprons for mechanics ... I know a lady who has her home business making dresses.. and another who makes curtains for her clients. There is a large market out there just look into what you would like to do!
Absolutely word of mouth is THE BEST form of advertising. I did my first"paid" job for a friend. She was thrilled with the outcome! Then I got a call from HER friend....and her friend...and on and on. I also worked up a flyer of what I am good with and the services I don't do. As you, they go away knowing exactly what to expect. Very good video!!! I love ALL you videos. God Bless
this is a great video! passion + integrity + preparation = success. It is a great truth. And having been in the beauty industry for over 20 years, again, another truth: if people are happy with your work, you will never be hungry for they will tell many of their friends about your work. HOWEVER...if 1 person is unhappy with your work, they will tell everyone they meet. Word of mouth advertising is the best, and every client you work for is your best advertising, or your biggest nightmare. And so, work with passion, with integrity, with preparation...and when the complainers complain, no one will believe them. I have also not charged someone for a service they were unhappy with at the end - even though I did exactly as they requested. I told them go on, and if they wanted, they could pay me next week. And when their unhappiness came back to me from others, I would say, "...did she also tell you that haircut was free of charge?" Of course, she had not. Thank you Lorena, for sharing your insight and experiences with all of us. Anyone interested is starting their own business - regardless of the type of business - would do well to hear your words.
great information.the only way you learn your machine is to use it.so many people including myself don't know what we are buying into.when we buy a long arm.did you hesitate at all in buying one.
I think I asked a lot of questions to different friends. Before I got the machine. You can also rent a machine and see how it works. Honestly I had a dream that I had the machine in my room before I ever got it. So the dream told me to get it.... I know it sounds weird what i'm writing, but I dreamed the machine and the lights. For me that was God telling me that it was a good machine. I also asked questions a friend who had one in her home gave me a lot of counsel. Don't be afraid to ask... and keep asking. Its a huge investment and you don't want to have something that your not happy with. Also a lady told me this advice and I am so thankful; for her... Don't buy what you can afford. Buy What you really want. She told me she bought a machine- then was unhappy- bought another one and feels that if she would of waited and gotten what she wanted it would of saved her money. So when I got my machine I got what I wanted and I haven't regretted it. The computer is wonderful it saves my back, arms, and shoulders. It wasn't hard to learn and I started making quilts for my kids and myself with beautiful designs because of the computer. The machine is industrialized and has all metal internal parts so I have never had the machine break on me. I have the longest throat space, hydraulics, and even painted. Which now 8 years later I am glad I got what I wanted not what I could afford even if I had to wait. I was worth it. in the end. I don't think or regret getting the painted machine or the computer system or even the hydraulics after 8 years your not going to remember the 1000.00 you used on the paint, but in those 8 years I have loved the color and how it looks like a sculpture in my room.
As time goes on rates rise any way .. so as I was learning my clients knew they were getting a discounted rate due to my inexperience but they also knew that it didn’t mean the rates would stay that way.. I have a business based on me deciding if I want to work or not.. not the client .. my clients know after time my rates would increase.. but they also saw my work that it was worth more than they paid., example Walmart has sales.. the people who see the sale benefit from it.. but then after a while the product goes of sale. If people like the product they will return regardless .. so sometimes I have I guess a sale come now and buy type of thing .. but then on other seasons I don’t have the sale.. so they can wait 3. Months till I open the sale of get the work done they wanted now.. after a while I raised my rates slowly but still have incentives.. like maybe not on on sale but bring 3 items get one for the old rate.. after a while people knew my work .. loved me for my generous rate and appreciate me enough to understand hey she worth paying more. But I still did something for free or gave something extra.. like batting- or thread charge was discounted or removed or gave an item for free but raised my rates in other areas. ..
I've invested and this year I learned my machine. I took classes and will continue into 2017. I practiced making things and I'm doing it. I'm going into my craft room after work and bring diligent.
Mary Fagan Yes some people are hard... but I have found some great people too... it's just weeding out the weeds from your garden! Water the good flowers and pull out the blood suckers!! 😂just saying ..
You were so inspiring.... With every fiber of your being ,you do love your craft. I wish I lived close to you. I miss positive people. I'm getting ready to sell my home due to loosing my husband to cancer n me being a cancer survivor......Going to FL and can't wait......this place is so negative and I too have been ripped off from customer's too I pray I meet people like you there....been in a deep depression from loosing my best friend n love of my life. Your video has modtivated me SOOO. much......From the bottom of my heart. Thank you n God bless you.....
Theresa Morgan I hope that you really find joy it there... I was real depressed and that’s how I found the gift of sewing and how much peace inside it brought me... I’m sure your husband wants you to live a hopeful and happy life .. in the Bible it says we are earthen vessels.. the Jews used to hid treasure in the earth in glass containers. And dig a whole in the earth and hid the vessel that had treasures inside of them..I feel like some times we are vessels hidden in this world that ... God one day digs up the vessels which are use.. and the breaks the vessel.. brokenness can seem the worst moment and hopelessness fills us.. but the times God broke me.. he really was releasing the hidden gifts I didn’t know I had inside myself..I hope in your brokenness that their is a wonderful revelation of love and gifts of peace in your like.. I hope this is a new beginning for you 🌸
lorena, I have no speech, and the woman asked me right in front of the crafty crew, which is 8 women quilters, sewers and well crafters. they have been known to hurt people at the club we all belong to and I have heard all and not wanting to hear. she cornered me. and I will take your advise. 25/hr and rent it. ...thank you so much..that woman put me on the spot in front of her friends. I belong to the aries of eagles, they are auxillary. not a problem but they are mean for 2 years to me. I almost walked away but I cant, I believe in the club and every year I do the Halloween party to donate my quilts and party for the kids for cancer. I make about 2,500.00 every year and its one of the biggest event. out of my heart. love your video's, never seen them before...love your gammel too...have a great evening sweety, hugs chris bergeron
My grandmother paid 4,000 for the machine and she passed & I wanted to keep it up and sew in memory of her with her machine that she didn't use but for about a year before her health stated to Decline. Hope you may be able to give me some info. Thx
I also just bought a vevo machine it's small basically for small crafts but I really want to do a quilt but don't know what size needle and which foot to use, really haven't sewed that much but I know the main concepts.
I'm sorry I have no idea is it a sewing machine or embroidery or a longarm type machine... I wish I could help -- you can get the serial # from you machines and put it online and you may be able to find a Manuel
I know what you mean about people who want everything for next to nothing and will look at your quilts with a critical eye. I made the mistake of showing my latest quilt to a neighbor. She loved it, and wants one, but I told her I make them for family only. She disregarded my policy. She tried to coerce me 2 times, but it would be a can of worms dealing with her. You're absolute right to just give them their money back and don't do any work for them again. Maybe these are the people who need a blessing.
Mary Donovan Sometimes people just don't understand how much work and time is involved in making a quilt.... I try and make sure I do things with the right heart !! I rather not do the job if I'm complaining in my heart about it! Being free is very important to me... and the blessing is not letting money be a factor people can use to control me when I'm doing something creative! If the Lord places it in your heart bless them with a quilt but only then do I do quilts and give them away! Thank you for your comment!
I kept foster children for 12 years. Your video was so good. I bet you are an awsome mom. Part of the things you are saying sounds like the things I told my teens through the years.

Power Tools with Thread Yes the ladies at that business are real sweet! I don't mean to say anything while being as honest as I can be! I appreciate your comment!
thank you for saying all this, I love my long arm and I am not a pro. I just love quilting on it. god says share your ritches but I do with my quilts making money for the eagles to donate for sicknesses, not quilting for people.
