Recommendation, don't grind off the helmet lock retaining screws. Simply tap them counterclockwise with a chisel or punch and the retaining screws come right out easily. I also cut off the stock metal bracket holding the lock.
the left side OEM turn signal bolt (6mm x 55mm) is not long enough to pick up the bracket, subframe, subframe support, spacer and 6mm nylock nut. I am annoyed because this will require a trip to the hardware store. My bike is a 2015 for the record
i prefer the tusk highland X2 rackless.. for the XR650L it fits the bike much better, is much better suited for what the user is using for and is lighter and less weight on bike plus is a TUSK product... panniers on an xr650L is not what the main buyers would want! imo.. but ive just been riding and racing for 52+ years.. i had the X2 rackless on my vstrom 1000 and loved it on that but i could use more space on the vstrom.. the xr needs a compact system in which the X2 is! just my 2 cents..
@@rmatvmc where is your "how to" on the highland X2? need me to do one i guess.. :) every item i bought with my hard earned dollar.. so if it didnt or does not work i dont use it. no bs, no punches pulled... i plan to do a video even tho they are prevalent. none in my opinion really put it all together with a purpose and followed it thru to actual full use.. not just a test ride... i plan to take the xr650L on a 900 mile ride here in the coming week. On the CenCaBORL an 1100 mile looped route here in central California. the Central California Backcountry Off Road Loop..

RH subframe support was a 1/4" too short for my 2006, close, but unfortunately steel is pretty unforgiving and doesn't stretch. Going to consult the manufacturer on Monday.
On my xr650l 2007 My LH subframe suppourt slot to the oem bottom passenger peg is 1/4 in too short. And my kit didn't include blinker wire extensions. Returning the kit completely. Loved the idea but poor execution.
When are you going to do the install video for the Honda Rally...?? I am trying for a medium black box set.. Because the Silver and all other TUSK pannier parts for the Honda Rally won't be available till mid October..lol
Put this on my 2018 xr650l and the left hand subframe support hits the chain when I go over the smallest bumps and only weigh 200 plus my 20 pound tool kit that was on the rack so i dont know what i would do if i had it fully loaded. And the Chain guard is toast. Anyone got a fix or know why? but currently dont recommend the subframe supports but the rest of it was easy to put on and works well.
*Jake Ratliff* Thanks for contacting us about your issue. Can you please send me over some detailed pictures of the mounting and damage caused? We will look into this for you. Thanks, Vinny - vinnyg@rockymountainatv.com
I have bought and installed this kit with my own time and money. Installing the aluminum boxes went well, the rack on the other hand has not. The left hand sub frame suppourt arm is not compatible with my xr650l 2007. The bottom slot that bolts to the passenger foot peg hole is too short by 1/4inch. As of right now I am looking to have a shop machine the slot larger to fit. The kit also did not come with a helmet lock, turn signal wire extensions, and a bolts/washers/nuts for the turn signal mounts. I would have returned this kit but the vurban industries would not take it back, even though the product is incomparable with my moto and came missing parts. I have contacted tusks suppourt and they have been very unhelpful. They say the arm needs to be flexed to fit, which is not the case. It has been a week since I requested the missing turn signal wires and they have not arrived nor have I been contacted about them. I would highly suggest looking into a different rack, or be sure to go over the parts list when you receive the kit. Do not buy elsewhere other than straight from rocky mountain industries, if you have problems you have to deal with another company as the middle man and it is a pain. Having the kit on the bike now I am pleased, if i over look the customer suppourt and missing parts. Good luck hope this helps someone.
Use to be that you could buy the top rack with subframe supports, then later add on the pannier racks (this was my plan). However now I cant seem to find just the side racks. Any chance this is still a possibility?
Hi Jordan, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately this method of piecing the complete kit together isn't an option. My suggestion would be to sell your current top rack kit separately and recoup some of that cost of getting the complete pannier and top rack kit. I hope this helps. - Wes
Sorry, unfortunately we don't have this available for the XR600R. There are not many pannier racks for the XR600 that I'm aware of but I have seen quite a few bigger rear racks that could hold plenty of supplies. Cycleracks used to make a heavy duty rear rack so maybe check that one out!
Any idea when the tusk pannier rack for xr650l will be available? Last month (end of December) it said 4 of January, last two days the website said 5 of March (Expected in stock), yesterday it said 6 of March, Today It telling me 7 of March. How long do I need to wait?
look at the X2 highland racxkless, by tusk as well.. you just need a rear rack.. added 80-100 bucks.. but the pannier system on the xr650L seems a bit much..

Like it except the blinker mounts look like an after thought. Why not just run the blinker bolt through the pannier rack instead of using that ugly aluminium bracket?
No fnk way the cleane looks is not right at all, why peopel f with the legal lights. It scapes my mind. Bit good rack juat order one when i saw here, i also uave an xr250, does ot woke on that bike too.
x2 rackless will fit!! highland x2 by tusk.. i dont know why they rm/atv would not highlight the highland X2 rackless for the xr... just need to add a rear rack where tool bag went and it fits like it was made for it.. RM/ATV missed the boat imo.. they should be promoting the X2 models for the lighter ds bikes.. and even the adv bikes..
Great addition to one of the best all around dirt bikes ever built.
Picked up my rack this evening at the KY warehouse. Went on easy enough. One step closer to the TAT. 🤙

^ this. No need for a grinder. Thanks, @Rob Reece
Your videos are fantastic. Thanks for spending the time to do these.
We're glad you enjoy them! Thanks for watching.
I wasn't sure watching the video; are you supposed to use medium strength thread locker??
Yes, using medium strength thread locker is highly recommended.
Between driver and gear how much weight can the bike hold for long distance rides? And thanks.

Been waiting and waiting and waiting for this top rack. The date keeps getting pushed back on the site.
Did you ever pick one up? You have a XR?
Looks like a pretty good crash cage for the back of the bike.

What's a good seat? I did a 200+ mile ride 4 days ago on my 2017 XR650L and my seat is like a rock.
seat concepts
What other options are there for passenger footpegs that will work with this rack system?
We used the Bike Master Buddy Motorcycle Foot Pegs on this bike but any universal pegs with 12mm mounting bolts should work just fine.
Nice video.....but how about an xr600r? will this be compatible? Isthere anything out there that will work, or should I just fabricate my own? Cheers

You can easily do that with a smaller aftermarket set. Probably what I'll do. They were just trying to get it back far enough to be seen I think.
what size is gas tank?
This is an aftermarket 5.8 gallon tank from Acerbis.
Passengers have no affect whatsoever on over-loading the rear frame structure of this bike. Unless you got a good example? ... SHOW IT!

To see if this will fit your model use the drop down menu on the product page. And if your vehicle is listed then it should fit.
The Honda is a great bike but that's ......waaaay too much...Just get a DR or a KLR....and go adventure riding
simon templer The Honda is better than those two for off road riding, better suspension... More suspension.
Get your DR or KLR and come ride with me on my XR. 😋
So you guys can't sell me pannier racks separate from the top rack? That sucks. Guess I'll start shopping elsewhere. 🤷♂️
