I am giving away twelve (12) Bloomburrow Commander precons plus some booster boxes and more on my next Whatnot stream! Join me Friday, July 26th at 11am PST and you can use my code at www.whatnot.com/invite/tolariancollege to get a $15 credit when you create a new account!
Just an FYI, the invite link doesn't appear to work (at least for me) if you have an Adblocker enabled. With my Adblocker enabled, I just see a blank page. But if I disable it, I then see the page.
I know right. Who would have thought that? I’m asking cause I want to reward that single employee who came up with the idea. They must have been terrified going to R&D and saying” If you make a good product that people like maybe we can sell more of that product. Just my two cents guys.”
This set is such a huge slamdunk in every single aspect for me. I haven't been this excited about a magic set in so long, to play it, to crack packs, to fawn over the art, to learn the lore. All of it.
Well, according to cladistics tetrapods have a fish ancestor, thus making them also fish if we don’t make it paraphyletic. So Merfolk are always going to be fish. The real question is are they basal tetrapods like amphibians or are they aquatic mammals. My guess is that Merfolk are polyphyletic and some merfolk descend from fully terrestrial ancestors whereas others never truly left the water.
Gotta love the employee that went to R&D and said “Hey guys let’s make a product that people actually like. Put some time and effort into it and maybe we can sell more product if customers see it’s not just another cheap money grab. Also let’s create a new 7 card pack without rares for it as well. That’ll go over well with fans.” Oh well 1 out of 2 isn’t bad for WotC lately.
I really appreciate this series Prof! With so much product and so many cards being revealed at at any given moment, it’s really helpful to have a list for the 99 that is curated AND has an explanation of how it fits in a given deck. 10/10 would watch again
For the first time in almost 8 years i signed up for a prerelease event! I can't wait to draft and get my hands on this set, to build a commander (Ofc it's flubs the fool hahah), pick a few for the 99 and bling some decks with bloomburrow lands, they're just so cute i can't with it ❤
Legitimately so excited for this set. Amazing limited by the looks of it. Great lore. Awaome flavour. One of the best sets in 2024 if not the best one imo.
" Why I otter..." I laughed way too hard at that. The flavor text in this set, absolutely love it. This is one of the first sets that FEELS like magic the gathering in a long time. I'm stoked to play prerelease and get some great cards for my commander decks!
i ended up getting 4 of the cards you mentioned here during my pre-release, and a Maha from my promo pack! Even though the flavor of the set isn't my favorite thing in the world, it's crazy how much a well thought-out world is making me enjoy the game again :)
As far as cards that'll make an impact, the offspring mechanic needs a mention. Being able to make copies of your nontoken creatures is an amazing 2 for 1 deal, even if they're only 1/1s. Token doubling decks are good at making more tokens, even of non token creatures, but being one right off the bat without having to expend cards is a great way to get much more value out. My Rhys deck is in heaven.
the offspring cards are so good..... i'm converting my rhys deck into a finneas deck because i think that's a more fun theme but even besides that there's like a dozen cards from this set going into this deck because all the token cards are so fun and good
I love the explanations on why the plains walkers are animals, it's a story and world building affect that actual makes it work so well Also all the new ability like gift and offspring are so cool and creative
So I'm not a magic player but through your channel I've slowly started to think "Maybe I should get into it..." I was thinking of holding off till FF set next year but your enthusiasm for this set is extremely infectious. So really what I'm saying is: Boy howdy do I hope I win a precon in the stream haha.
You should hold till FF set, because you can always return to this set later with magic been such a accessible game But if you do not mind having a few decks, you can collect this set with it commander set
Something that wasnt mentioned in dour-port mage, The tokens Inalla make get exiled at end of turn so it works very well for Inalla. In addition to that, if for some reason you have massive amounts of mana, the token copy can bounce the original after which you can replay it, so this can let you draw a ton of cards at once (or draw your deck if you have infinite mana somehow)
I have an abzan foods deck and there's a whole bunch of new toys for it in this set, but I think the biggest one is Ygra. That big cat making all creatures into food really allows for so many new play options.
Two notes on this video: 1) The storm otter triggers when you CAST a spell. Note that copying a spell (like with Storm) is not casting. 2) Merfolk (or at least traditional mermaids) are mammals. They’re not even half fish; their tails match cetacean mammals’ horizontal fins rather than fish’s vertical fins
I love to think about the paw modes as wotc‘s method of building and balancing cards. And now we can build the cards ourselves. In the Game! Someday we will describe the Value of all cards in paws!
Dour-Port mage feels like a pushed Temur Sabertooth- and I love it. Self-bouncing is also pretty fun with adventures, morph, and X-cost cards you'd otherwise be unable to Blink or Flicker.
@@franslair2199 I must have forgotten that. Like "oh yeah no wonder it infinite combos". But idk about you: I just don't feel like using it outside of Temur decks even though it's mono green. Guess I'm crazy.
I almost blurted out laughing at the Number 1 not because it's bad (it's really good), but because the name reminds me of a certain viral meme that I'll not elaborate on to keep this comment spoiler-friendly.
Bloomburrow is now officially my #1 set of all time. I'm glad I got to see this as someone who grew up on all the cartoons that inspired this set and also played Magic since the 1990s.
"For the Common Good" is an insane card in my Roxanne, Starfall Savant deck. Roxanne already gives you an insane amount of ramp to pay a high x value for the card, which can just kill a player outright and then since you copied meteor, you have 10-20 more copies to tap for 40 mana and cast another x spell. The card is less than $1 too which is great for my wallet.
Parting Gust is such an interesting new card. It's great for exiling a really strong creature at the cost of gifting a card, but it works great in an exile if you don't give the gift. It's incredibly versatile
The best reason to bounce your own wizards: scrivener, anarchist, izzet chronarch. I run them for a washout/evacuate/upheaval combo and/or a high tide+ time stretch.
I haven't played paper magic since I graduated college over ten years ago. I started playing other TCG's casually in the last 6 months and Bloomburrow is getting back into Commander. I will be playing all of the raccoons in my new raccoon tribal deck.
Rottenmouth Viper is super exciting for Henzie. Blitz it in at a discount on top of its innate discount (maybe even sacrificing Henzie himself to get another commander cast) and getting the first trigger at etb, and then immediately attack for a follow up trigger from the viper, forcing all your opponents to stare down the threat of twelve total life lost if they don't acquiesce to the wretched snake's demands before it even deals any combat damage. And even after that, when it dies you'll draw a card and have probably fed it to the various sacrifice value engines Henzie runs.
Got three tree city out of my prerelease box. Slapped that sucker into my mono green Nylea wolf deck. That and nyxthos together in that deck is gonna be FUUUUUUUUUNNN!! I should probably get more of those when i can, given i adore tribal/kindred decks. Also, cackling because i got a borderless season of loss from the same kit and it is going in one of my graveyard black decks
Brave-Kin Duo is a card I'm looking forward to. It's probably very bad outside of Limited and even then only good for triggering Valiant. But the flavor text! "Did you bring everything you need for the journey?" the rabbit asked. "Of course I did! I brought you, my dear pine cone," the mouse replied.
I have Edifice of Authority and it's pretty good so yeah I remember brick counters, Edifice is just great for constantly locking down a single creature without needing anything else to help it.
Season of Loss, Three Tree City and Mabel Hier to Cragflame are my biggest wants from the set. The first two you explained. Mabel is at minimum a near sword of vengeance on a stick, which isn't op but more haste enablers is always welcome!
This’ll be my first MTG prerelease. I’ve been slowly getting into Commander, building a rat deck, and this set really speaks to me. Even if there was no rat support, I’d still love it. Better than steampunk cowboys lampshading manifest destiny or whatever
the Season of Loss does have the option to sac 1 creature to it and draw 2 cards for each creature that died under your control as well. which is great if you have already lost some creatures. you can sac one more. and draw twice the number of lost creatures in cards.
As a mono white player i think parting gust is going to be pretty insane. 2 mana to either exile an opponents creature OR protect one of your creatures (from both targeted removal and board wipes since it returns at next end step).
When I saw Jacked Rabbit, I knew I needed to make a Rabbit kindred deck. Having Ravenous is both good and hilarious. Making X 1/1 tokens where X is its power when it attacks is great. Both in a Selesnya +1/+1 Tokens deck means you can make a massive rabbit and put out dozens of smaller ones each turn.
*Patchwork Banner* was one of my favourite cards to see. It's got it's place in Commander, and it was a neat piece of design in Limited (makes it easier to splash, but a splashing deck probably gets less utility out of the anthem effect)
I think Coruscation Mage is amazing in any spellslinging burn deck. It is the same manavalue and effect as a card like Kessig Flamebreather, which is a great card in itself, but later you can pay Coruscation Mage's Offspring cost to get double the otters and double the triggers for each noncreature spell you cast!
Personally, I’m just putting Bloomburrow cards into my 99 because they’re all funny little guys. I haven’t been as excited for a Magic set as I have been Bloomburrow. Probably helps that I play bird tribal and my brother plays squirrel tribal lol.
Innkeeper's Talent is also great for decks that want to kill with poison counters, since the third level doubles the amount of poison you're putting on your opponents whenever you manage to slip through their defenses with a toxic or infect creature.
I just got into Magic and run the zombie precon. The Season of Loss is going to play so good in my deck with my "Opponents take 1 damage when a zombie dies." This is my most anticipated card.
Also on the topic of Gift, for permanents the gift is part of the etb trigger of that permanent. For example if you let Starforged Sword resolve, but stifle the etb trigger that equips to a creature, you don't get the gift.
Considering the price you can get it for right now, Innkeeper's Talent is slept on. I have a feeling it's going to go up in price a lot in the next year or so. The only downside to this new set is how much Magic has gone up in price in the past few years. Return to Zendikar boxes were under $100 when the set came out. Bloomborrow boxes are $140...
Along with the land, patchwork banner shouldn’t be overlooked. A buff for a creature type of your choice is really going to help typal decks that don’t have as nice support or lord effects as others.
The otter wizards, including stormsplitter, have me really eyeing Adeliz to finally build that as a commander list. Adeliz in standard was always a very fun silly aggro deck. Rottenmouth Viper looks like it will be bonkers if encored out with Araumi, the Dead Tide however. As if I needed any help making that deck nasty in my playgroup.
I figure you were probably joking about the merfolk fish/mammal video coming later, but I actually would be interested in your thoughts on creature types. I think there’s some interesting things to discuss there. Cephalopod becoming Octopus makes me wonder if more types could or should be simplified.
Bloomburrow is an amazing looking set and, in my opinion, the first set this year that feels like a "real" Magic set with coherent world building. Makes me miss blocks even more. The only thing that I dislike so far is, that they made Imagine: Courageous Critters exclusive to Collector Booster and I hope this practice does not continue in upcoming releases (exclusive treatments are fine).
Inkeeper's talent say "permanent you control with counters" not creatures, wich means that your planeswalkers by default have Ward 1 wich by itself is a huge buff to them, and obviously makes the card way more usefull
Personally i think the blue season is the best one (and thats coming from someone whose least favorite color in mtg is blue). The fact that it can be a boardwipe, a clone effect (or 2) and carddraw to round out howevermany paws are left makes it the most versitile one of the cycle.
Bloomburrow seems to be doing something that the crossover sets aren't doing: making new people WANT to play Magic. Like, legit, this set is the positive news Magic needed right now.
i suspect "enters" will be put into the rules as being short for "enters the battlefield" just as [cardname] is short for "this specific game object", and in future it'll be mixed into sets to shorten specific cards' rules text, theyre just putting it on every blb card to get all of us used to seeing it, i dont think every single card is being errata'd to say "enters" like they did with the old artifact tap-to-deactivate thing

hi, people from other countrys can also get a free precon in the whatnot stream or is just for EEUU?
Love my academic box. Only production box that fits my dragon shield sealed sleeve decks.
It’s almost like making an effort to write a cohesive world and lore makes a better product!
The first thing I thought when I looked through the set and read the lore
I know right. Who would have thought that? I’m asking cause I want to reward that single employee who came up with the idea. They must have been terrified going to R&D and saying” If you make a good product that people like maybe we can sell more of that product. Just my two cents guys.”
idk the mtg lore is the same as overwatch lore its there if you care but for me it doesn't make the product any better
But line go down if passion is present.😢

I think this is the best set of the year.
im so happy abt this set cuz it has so much for my chatterfang deck
"We'll cover more ground if I split up" has to be up there as one of the great flavor texts 😂
It would've been perfect if it were not for the fact that THEY LITERALLY PUT IT ONE SET BEFORE THE ONE THAT'S A HAUNTED HOUSE LIKE WHAT
go give "Incorrigible Youths" a look and factor in the art, also, i agree, its amazing 10/10
I absolutely love the gift mechanic. Best part for me is going to be when I gift the player who's most behind to help them catch up! 🥰
looks like there's gonna be a bunch of group-hug fun, considering there's a commander precon for it and all.
I love gift as well, I just absolutely hate the gift a turn spell… that’s gonna make for just bad edh gameplay
god damm! I didn't even consider how fun it is that this mechanic encourages you to help players who are behind!
Especially with some Hullbreacher on board, or Sheoldred, it's a double benefit!
The Hullbreacher that is banned in Commander, you mean 😢 ? @@vergescalvin428
Now I can't wait for the Merfolk: Mammal or Fish video. 😸
I think they actually fall under amphibian since they can breathe air and water.

Worth noting that there are very few loyalty counter doublers so Innkeeper's Talent is an auto include in superfriends decks.
That innkeeper seems mighty good at poison, too. Some talent for hospitality!
Dour port-mage also works with flicker affects, because a creature leaves the field without dying.

Innkeeper's Talent is also great for decks that want to kill with poison counters, since the third level doubles the amount of poison you're putting on your opponents whenever you manage to slip through their defenses with a toxic or infect creature.

Yes Please!

Hey everyone, wanted to remind people to check to see if they're subscribed! For some reason I wasn't subscribed to TCC, TH-cam strikes again!
my favorite is dawn's truce. a heroic intervention in white with the low downside of an opponent draws a card
I, too, have a Bant Merfolk deck that wants Three Tree City. I am hyped for this set!
Im excited to build a full rabbit deck with cadira as commander tbh
Three Tree City is one of those cards that ends up in specific tribal decks, but I wouldn't just jam it anywhere. It's fine, B+
Three Tree City is gonna be cracked in my Gishath deck.
For whatever reason my weird brain instead jumped to the Vivid land cycle. As if anyone would waste removal on such a land.
Personally i think the blue season is the best one (and thats coming from someone whose least favorite color in mtg is blue). The fact that it can be a boardwipe, a clone effect (or 2) and carddraw to round out howevermany paws are left makes it the most versitile one of the cycle.
Great video Prof, thank you! I'm so ready to grab a copy of Innkeeper's Talent. Atraxa is about to pop off
Thanks, Prof! Now I know what to proxy for my commander decks! 😊
I am actually planning to collect a complete set. I love the set so much.
Bloomburrow seems to be doing something that the crossover sets aren't doing: making new people WANT to play Magic.
Like, legit, this set is the positive news Magic needed right now.
0:28 It’s indeed a great set Prof I am HYPEEEEEE
I'm so glad prof aggres with me on the seasons and especially on Season of Loss.❤
i suspect "enters" will be put into the rules as being short for "enters the battlefield" just as [cardname] is short for "this specific game object", and in future it'll be mixed into sets to shorten specific cards' rules text, theyre just putting it on every blb card to get all of us used to seeing it, i dont think every single card is being errata'd to say "enters" like they did with the old artifact tap-to-deactivate thing
Season of Loss is a must add to my Carmen Cruel Skymarcher deck.
That innkeepers talent is definitely going into my Ghave Guru of Spores deck good LORD 😳
Wow might slot Innkeeper's Talent that right over Branching Evolution. Love to see more classes as well.
Eagerly looking forward to the “Are Merfolk Mammals?” video.
"Remember brick counters..? No?!" 😆
