  • In this video, I talk about The ABC System, which has been a bit temperamental lately, with the white and then red warning lights coming on and going off again in my CL500. Apologies for sound - no idea why that happened, like it was going out of phase... weird!
    I also talk about what to look at when trying to find and buy a CL500 or one of the variants. like the CL55 or CL600.
    If you enjoy this video and like this kinda stuff, please consider subbing!
    Thanks for watching and feel free as always, to leave any comments or tales of your own adventures below! Cheers
    Mark

    Hi Mark, partly inspired by your vlog I have just purchased a CL500. It is a 2001 model with just over 100000 miles with most of the history.

    Hi great video and nice to listen to.
    Hope I don't have half the troubles you seem to have had.
    I bought my 2002 CL500 on Saturday. It was cheap and high mileage but very clean and tidy. Absolutely beautiful to look at and drive.
    So far everything electrical seems to work as should and there doesn't seem to be a suspension issue.
    The front nearside indicator doesn't work even with a new bulb in. I haven't had chance to check anything else with that problem yet but Im hoping its a minor thing. Fuse perhaps ?
    The one I bought also has an LPG conversion which eases the thought of driving costs. That said its a modification and has had an effect on my insurance cost.
    I can only drive it on weekends for a few glorious hours due to work through the week, but wow what a fantastic thing to drive. Definitely the best all round vehicle I have ever owned considering its age.
    All you can do having bought a machine is deep breath in and hope for the best.

      Nice one! They are all so different and so much depends on the care they had previously and what was changed / replaced when required... despite the issues and stuff that needs doing, I've done 40,000 miles in the almost exactly 4 years I've owned it... it just went straight through its Spanish MOT and still needs a few minor niggles sorted but.... apart from that... what a car... very hard to replace once they get under your skin!! Enjoy my friend, happy motoring and thanks for your comment.

    Nice one, I have a cl500 2003 it’s tanzanite blue with java cream leather. Cool to see you driving yours on a long haul really want to drive to France in mine perfect car for it. Just wish I’d got the 55 kompressor the 500 is a tad too soft looking for my liking. Apart from that there so much car for the money

      Hey Billy - I looked for a 55 when I was buying mine but they were either silly money or not up to spec - you can always add mods cosmetically, like the AMG front spoiler or some new wheels... which I would like to get round to in due course but I prefer to make sure all the mechanics are right first. So... get your keys, your passport and some undies lol - and go explore! It's such a great way to have a break and as you say, perfect car. Take care and thanks for the comment!

    Bought one of these, with everything working fine. Drove it home and one day later got a red ABC warning with the whole car now just driving in the highest setting. Rip.

      Does the dashboard switch change the height? Could be anything, a pump, a pressure line, an accumulator or a stuck valve. Get it onto the MB Star diagnostic computer and get it checked out

    Great videos Mark. Thanks for uploading. I'm not far from buying a 2006 CL500 with 80k miles on it. I'll have an AA inspection done prior to purchase but do you know if the later CL years (2004-2006) performed better than early years 2000-2003)? Do you have big mileage on yours?

    • @MercedesCL500W215VLOG
      @MercedesCL500W215VLOG  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi when you say "perform" do you mean like acceleration top speed etc or in terms of reliability? Either way apart from the facelift I don't recall their being any serious changes in spec. Good luck with your search and yes! Inspection!! Good man 😉

    • @ckkehoe2

      @@MercedesCL500W215VLOG Apologies Mark, I meant perform in terms of reliability. I think the facelift may have had a few less common gremlins. Not sure if you have anything to add?

      @@ckkehoe2 hi Conor, no I think like any older car it all depends on so many factors and you can't have a blanket "Yes/No" for reliability - who knows what happened during a service or how a car was driven... like when it starts up for example. Is it revved before being at operating temperature, driven badly over crappy roads.. know what I mean LOL? So... however, the later the car the better I guess, for chassis parts wear and tear and being used reasonably regularly is always beneficial. Hope that helps! Cheers

      Many thanks Mark. Really appreciate the feedback. We ultimately take our chances with any second hand older car so we can only mitigate risk up to a point but therein lies the fun 😂 Keep the videos coming - they're great viewing 👍

    I'm looking at buying me a cl600 or cl500. It's not going to be my daily driver. Do you have any advice on which on is better.

    • @MercedesCL500W215VLOG
      @MercedesCL500W215VLOG  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Billy - the 600s have a common issue, which is the ignition rails. These can be expensive to replace if not already done, or done recently and are a one piece per side unit, unlike the 500 which has individual ignition modules. So bear that in mind! Other than that, go for a checkover on a prospective purchase and make decisions based on what is there NOW and not necessarily the Service History! Also, apologies for the delayed response, for some reason TH-cam is not notifying me of comments on these videos! Cheers for now!

    Hi Mark,
    What would be the best CL model to purchase? 2000 to 2003 or 2004 to 2006. I have a Mercedes C350 V6 Coupe but getting bored of it. Am I best targeting a well looked after and a full Mercedes service history on it.

    • @MercedesCL500W215VLOG
      @MercedesCL500W215VLOG  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Get the latest model you can. Usually spec items which were options on early cars become standard on later models... plus generally less wear and aging on chassis parts, hoses, seals etc... plus you get the later technology on electronics. If i were to buy another CL I would probably seek out a very late CL55 Kompressor. As always, condition is paramount as is most recent work, as well as a checkover to see what may need doing soon. Hope that helps, good luck !! Mark

    Hey Mark. Great update and I hope all goes parts arrive without stress to get your car sorted. Didn’t manage to get a CL in time for my French road trip but the car I looked at been re-listed at closer to what I offered for it so maybe I will make another offer. Part of me thinks spend half of that the 600 will cost and get a 500 but the v12tt appeals! Cheers. Duncan

      Haha... interesting! Get what you want or deep down you'll never be quite satisfied lol. I wanted a 55 Kompressor but oh well. Who needs more speed, especially as I just found out last night I got a ticket somewhere in Spain on my French road trip 2 weeks ago 😅.I'll be posting that video later ! Cheers, good luck!

      Hi, sorry - been traveling... just seen this... had an issue after some steering work done where all my ABS / ESP lights came on but this turned out ro be connections on the wheel / hub area. It's happened a couple of times over the last few years so there is obviously a weakness in the connections. Checked all these? If not my guess would be a sensor or an ABS ring in a hub. Good luck
