Inspired by your great comments and feedback I decided to finally get back to working on another orchestral cover from the Terranigma original game soundtrack. This time I chose the famous "Light Side Field" or "Overworld" theme, one of my absolute favorites from the score. Let yourself be lifted up by the glorious and heroic main theme that makes you feel like being prepared for any big adventure waiting out there.
Now lets stop explaining and get right into the piece ;). Really looking forward to your feedback in the comment section!
The outstanding soundtrack of Terranigma was originally composed by Miyoko Kobayashi (Takaoka) and Masanori Hikichi.

I swear this was the version playing in my head when playing Terranigma in my youth. There was another version though, the more melancholically epic one.

@@RomanHeuser Yes, thank you, of course I know that one always looking for Terranigma covers (tbh before I got to know you and listened to your work I hoped for Samos Studios to take on the Terranigma OST) and basically for sure appreciate the effort.
But what I personally (!) don´t like so much about it and hope you forgive my honesty: Although being sort of pompous and impressingly blasting I feel it is in a way too boosted on all instruments like an example of that "loudness war". It lacks or misses the mystical piano scale thingy (sorry i don´t know how it would be called in english) which adds so much to the original which you can hear at 1:46 here th-cam.com/video/9NFmgQqLmSo/w-d-xo.html which might have been added in creative ways. I probably would not care so much about the loudness stuff when that part would have been included (or more dominantly. ;)
I know the underlying piano up and down thingy wich accompanies the whole track is there and I am happy to have pretty ok headphones so I can hear it pretty well.
Really sorry, I hate to criticize on hard work given away for free but on the other hand this overworld track you made here is so fckng fantastic (and it is only my personal taste) . :-)
Maybe you take this into account change and arrange a little bit and make a version 2.0 of underworld? I´d be very happy but as a creative (well more or less lol) myself I would comprehend if this was not possible without remaking it complety because it would mean a complete change of your original concept.
edit: That is because with a little tweaking to my personal flavor your attempt on dark side field would be pretty great for me too as beneath what I critique there is a beautifully crafted track there for sure.
@@InjusticeHater Hey again, sorry, somehow I missed that last answer so I'm answering quite late, sorry for the delay. You absolutely don't have to apologize for giving feedback! I even totally agree with you that the Dark Side Field Cover could be improved. The track was one of my first game covers ever so it really was a very first attempt in that field. And that's - as you correctly analyzed - resulting in a quite unbalanced mix & instrumentation. I'm learning new things from track to track so I try to improve my writing and production with every piece I finish. That's probably the reason why there's a difference between Dark Side Field and Light Side Field. Great to see that you're diving into the music that much, couldn't be happier with constructive feedback like yours!

Imagine that in an incognito newgen console trailer, it would start with an incredible photorealistic gameplay that would travel the world (breath of the wild style) and then, at minute 1:20, when the music theme will be evident, the TERRANIGMA logo would be displayed, showing Ark running on the back of a Leon, wouldn't that be orgasmic?

I think the Krysta theme would be challenging, but it would be so good if someone like you made a remaster of it. :)
Other than that, the Credits theme comes to mind, but *that* would be really really challenging, though I definitely believe you can do it! 😊

Hi TheMarkwulf, thanks for your feedback! No, I didn't use any EastWest libraries despite some patches from Hollywood brass (just to blend with the main brass tracks) and a solo flute from Hollywood Orchestral Woodwinds. Strings are mostly Musical Sampling's Soaring Strings and Adventure Strings, Brass is Caspian from Performance Samples.

I appreciate the effort to make a symphonic arrangement of the Terranigma soundtrack, something I've been wanting ever since I listened to the original for the first time, and seeing the old symphonic concerts of the time, always lamenting this game didn't get the same treatment. But I have to say, sadly, that this is not it.
Sorry but the modern ambience and droning orchestra style simply betrays the spirit of the original and I find it to be an abominable artistic choice. The original melody is there, and you don't seem to do "creative" (nonsensical) note shifts that so many arrangers seem to think sound great (between you and me: they rarely do... because they just do them for the sake of it, and don't seem to care about the end result) This is something that I put to your credit, but the style you chose to arrange this into, while popular (...I guess?) nowadays, is something I generally abhor and completely betrays the melodic beauty of the original.
Hi Randomkeldam, thanks for your detailed feedback to my cover of the "Overworld Theme". There are two points I'd like to elaborate to give you some background. First, I am just like you a huge fan of "real" classical game concerts :). Especially the "Symphony of the Goddesses" Zelda-tour (I luckily was able to attend one of the concerts) was a musical revelation. But unfortunately, I'm not a classical composer, nor am I a professional orchestrator. I'm just a passionate hobbyist ;). Second, even if I had the skills of those, I don't have a real orchestra that I could record. I have to work with sample libraries and while, nowadays, they sound more and more realistic, you can still tell whether there's a real orchestra playing or a VST. So, unless you're a professional computer musician, it's a good way to mix in other elements to get a natural listening experience. I guess it's just a matter of taste. My dream was to put my old favorite game soundtracks into a modern movie soundtrack form just because that's one of my favorite genres. And so they became modern soundtrack versions ;). But anyways, you're right: I'd love to hear a completely classical version of the tracks too, without any synth-/or trailer music elements too :). Something like the 30th anniversary Zelda concert by Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra but for Terranigma would be the most amazing thing!
Apart from that I wonder about some of the vocabulary you used. Terms like "betraying the spirit of the original", "abominable choice" and "abhor" give the impression that your comment is more of an emotional statement towards a certain genre than a constructive criticism of points that didn't match your personal taste of music.
@@RomanHeuser I think I can relate to what's at the heart of radonkeldam's critique. There are a ton of "2 hours of epic powerful fantasy music" videos on youtube that appear to be incredibly popular. They do sound cool at first, but after a few minutes you notice that they just kinda drone on and on, overly relying on bombast and choruses while offering little in the ways of melody, variation or finesse. It's definitely something you should keep in mind going forward (some of your other pieces have run into this problem a little bit).
Imho you did a terrific job with this one however, highlighting the sublime qualities of this piece and staying true to its feeling. It's just freaking awesome honestly - I just wish it was a bit longer.
You know, if you "remake a song" one should at least recognize that song.

Dear Roman, thank you for this wonderful arrangement of the Overworld Theme. Terranigma was without a doubt the best RPG available to us Europeans up until the release of Suikoden in April 1997 and also the best game of the 4th generation console era for us Europeans. It's such a pity for what became of Quintet after this title, and it's so unfortunate that our friends in North America couldn't experience this masterpiece in 1996.
I'd wager its still better than Suikoden as well

You could craft such an amazing game by todays standarts and this track would be part of the trailer music.. I could really imagine a BOTW or Genshin impact style terranigma game with partially souls like influence. on ps5 specs.

Your Terranigma rearranges are wonderful. They retain the melodies but you've reinterpreted them in the context of a dynamic orchestral score, which does them so much justice it's enough to bring a tear to my eye. I hope you plan on compiling them into an album at some point, because I'd hit up Bandcamp *so fast*.
