Forget winning. I want to crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and hear the lamentations of their women.
Arena is far from casual though, considering the cut-throat style of the rewards and the three strikes and you're out system. People want something for their 150 gold entry free, thus, winning is extremely important in arena. Maybe not so much for Kripp in terms of the rewards but for the vast majority of players.

Not very - no better at OTK'ing than a Starfire, and more expensive too. Nevertheless:
Firelands Portal OTK:
1. Unstable Portal into Velen. Repeat.
2. Brann + Spellslinger into 2x Conceal.
3. Emperor into 2x Conceal.
4. 2x Velen, then Faceless one of the Velens, then Firelands Portal for an easy 40 damage OTK!
Still, why don't you just use a Fireball?
OTKerino Kripperino free board presence and value after your removal turn. Not to mention certain cards have synergy with expensive mana costs such as Medivh.

1. Brann spellslinger into conceal and firelands portal
2. Play two apprentices, echo of Medivh, play two more apprentices and conceal
3. Firelands portal face x3, getting Leeroy jenkins each time for total of 45 damage otk (plus apprentice)
7 mana 11 damage summon a 6/2 seems good

My cousin has played arena a lot, sometimes with me coaching, and never gotten 12 wins. We finally did it with a mage deck the other week, all it took was 1 flamestrike, 1 blizzard, and 5 firelands portals in the deck. Seems like a good card!
5 firelands portal is what i face at 3-2 nowsdays.
Blizzard must be pissed. For all the new cards they have introduced mage STILL doesnt have an above 80% winrate despite all their efforts. Next up: 3 mana 8/8 that deals 4 damage to all enemy minions common mage card.
You forgot it has "Cannot be targeted by spells and hero powers"
And at the end of your turn it deals 8 Damage to all enemies.
And the opponent's spells cost 5 more next turn.

Are there numbers on how much better Babbling Book is compared to Firelands Portal yet? They seemed to think book was more worthy of being rare than firelands, I wonder if any data supports that.

one thing i have been wondering is does the rairty of the minion effect how often it spawns from cards like firelands portal, like are you more likely to get a common than a legendary, or is it a 1 and x chance where x is how many 5 drops there are.

I think a problem lies in the mage hero power. If you compare the druid power, yes you gain 1 armor but you are often trying to clear a minion which normally ends up doing more than 1 damage to the hero, in addition the druid has to attack any taunt minions on board whereas the mage can put the 1 damage anywhere which impacts early game weak minions a lot. A better way to balance mage hero power would be to have it so it can only hit minions and has to pop any taunt minions before hitting others. This obviously won't remedy all the problems but its a start.
Not to disagree with Kripp from a balance perspective or anything, but as a clarification, the odds of facing a mage every game if they were A) well-balanced and B) always picked is around 54%. The chance of not seeing mage as a choice is 8/9*7/9*6/9~~.46 (not 33%). So while 80% mage matches would be well into unbalanced territory, say 40% mage match-ups wouldn't necessarily be.

In my own personal experience two is amazing, but usually at the three or four mark I start to notice a drop in its usefulness.

I don'T play as much arena as I used to. Tried it again recently, and I thought my deck was pretty good, with 2 Firelands Portals. Little did I know I would run into an opponent with FIVE.

The way to balance Shaman is to remove any way to unlock mana crystals. It's really overpowered.

I'm terrible at arena but the only time I got 10 wins was with 3 Firelands Portals and 2 Flamestrikes. My next best run is 6 wins, followed by 3. I've been playing since beta. Moral of the story is choose Mage every time.

I don't understand why don't blizzard implement a system where better rated cards appear less, still leaving some room for rng. I mean, arena would be a much better environment if it was like that.

Seriously though, how did Blizzard even release a card like this? They need to get experienced top arena and ladder players on the balance team, because clearly the current team has very little understanding of the game they are working on.
Kripp was able to tell how broken this card will be the moment it was announced. Blizz designed it, sent it to the balance team, it probably went through a few different iterations, and then they decided it's a good enough card to release.

Blizzard obviously makes Mages OP and increases their occurrence rate on purpose. No one would be passionate about a perfectly balanced meta - you need lords and underdogs to catch peoples emotion and make them care for the game.
