      Thanks for your comment. Just trying to share what I know. Compressor is a really useful program if you know how to use it.
      I'll be doing another in in a few weeks talking about using multiple computers to render at the same time.
      Its a crazy good feature that I see little documentation on.

    Just getting into FCPX. I bought a MacBook Pro (2015) and it only has 128GB of storage. I bought this laptop specifically for video editing and have been working on several projects before my storage space filled up completely. I was really thrown off because I only made about 3 videos. Knowing how to use Compressor is going to be super helpful. Thanks boss. Cheers

      Unfortunately video editing and production takes a lot of space. In my home office I'm pushing about 18 TB current and will likely be expanding.
      The good news storage and storage options have never been cheaper! You can easily pick up a 4TB drive to edit projects with for around $100.
      I'd recommend picking one up anyway as a little tip-
      When exporting you typically need DOUBLE the space of the main export. Half is for the work in progress as it's making the file, the other for the final file. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    My source file is apple prores 422 HQ with 5.1
    surround audio .mov file and needed to convert from
    .mov to .mp4 with 5.1 surround. In adobe premier
    pro and Adobe media encoder its no confusion coz
    there is an option to convert .mp4 with mono or
    stereo or 5.1 or dolby digital like ac3..
    but in apple compressor (also fcpx mp4 export
    shows only mono and stereo options) shows only
    mono and stereo options in audio tab please give
    me any suggestion to convert videos .mp4 format
    with 5.1 surround or dolby digital (ac3) through

      Hi there-
      thats an interesting question.
      Based on what i know, compressor should see that its a 5.1 and give you options in the audio settings.
      Heres apples official documentation on it.
      Hopefully that has some more technically detailed information for you.

    Thanks for the info. Looks like the new compressor is a lot better than the one back in the FCP7 days? I have been using Wondershare's iSKYsoft Video Converter successfully but they are not keeping up with Mac upgrades and thus at times I have no way to convert video at times. This looks amazing. Is it a little better or WAY better than the old compressor 3 i think it was?

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s way better in a lot of ways and worse in others.
      It’s faster and way better tools and setting up clusters actually works and works well on a lan.
      There’s very little post encode options. You use to be able to bundle scripts and send stuff automatically and have some really great features but I’m guessing no one really used it that much and it was likely scaled back.

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't think theres anything I can offer you. Sounds like an apple Issue. The good news is the props team are pretty quick on changes and updates. I would for sure file a bug report. You can search for Apple Compressor bug report of Google and it will pop up.
      Sounds like a awful bug!
      I bet all the code for the new color tools weren't piped properly to the export encoding channel for the dpx on the programming side or something.
      Thanks for the question!
      Hopefully if others run into it, now it's searchable here, and maybe apple will fix it faster?

    Hi Robert,
    At 6:32, you were able to change your Codec and even specify what bit-rate you can choose. I don't seem to have that option. When I click Codec, it just gives me a list of other codecs I can choose (and not nearly as much as the list you had in the video (I know I'm 4 years late to this video, sorry haha)), but I'm extremely desperate, as I need to turn a video around at 1080i/ 59.94i as soon as possible. Thank you for your help.

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Austin- happy to help. Based on your specific codec it sounds like it might be ending up for OTA broadcast somewhere? If so, you are likely working with AVID Codecs like DNXHD DNXHR ETC. Step one: install codecs. Those are a separate download from Avid systems. Any other codecs you want need to be installed. Ice been extremely lucky to have done work worldwide, and those bring their own codecs which is why I have so many listed. So if you need specific codecs, get them installed. Part two- not all codecs let you adjust bitrate because some are already locked to specific bitrate to ensure there’s less errors in the pipeline. I suspect this is the exact reason for the DNX family. Some codecs like h264 let you specify bitrate because they were designed to do that for more control for size of file vs quality to the best of my knowledge. Hopefully that answers your questions, and if you have any more questions, I’ll do my best to answer them. My first name is Stanislaw. My middle name is Robert.

    Really enjoyed this one! I just wonder why Compressor changes the color a bit so that they look a little bit washed out? I tried different codecs and resolutions but the colors always differ from the original colors I set up in Final Cut. I hope you can help me. Thank you so much.

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The long and short of it is-
      It doesn’t- but your codec/OS/browser will ALL display things differently.
      For example- h264 is always going to look different than a prores 4444.
      A DNxHD is going to look different in QuickTime Pro than it does in different players like vlc.
      Even watching the same video on TH-cam on chrome VS. safari will show slightly different colors.
      Then there’s full gamut or broadcast spec of having a clamped 16-235 vs 0-255 color range etc.
      I see tons of these post online- and the best you can do is test it against a waveform monitor or identically calibrated monitors to help mitigate the loss.
      As an example- I work at a television studio.
      I cut in avid or premiere or final cut.
      I color it the way I need etc- I send it off- by the time it gets to your tv over the air it goes through like 5 appliances that might clamp the signal or normalize the audio etc.
      That’s one of the reasons why workflow from top to bottom is so important.
      I might do an in-depth video about this with some of the engineers I work with but it’s so technical I’m afraid it might have a limited audience.
      Anyway thanks for watching hope it helped and if you have any other questions I’ll do my best to answer them.

      when in doubt always use scopes. You can have 20 different screens in the same room and depending on like 100 things the color etc can look different on each and every one.

    Extremely useful video. I'm struggling to work out something and hoping someone can explain what I'm missing.
    In the output preview, I am led to believe this should be what my file should look like. So, I can take a 4k video, change the resolution to 480p, and I can visibly see the video looking lower resolution.
    Should I also expect to see the bit rate change the output view? I'm taking a very high bit rate video here, changing it to the lowest in order to see the extremely low rate compression, but the output window looks no different. When I render out, the video looks as bas as expected.
    Of course, I don't plan to actually use this, but unless I see the accurate output, I'm having to run multiple 'experiments' to find a bit rate I'm happy with. Again, I was hoping the preview would help me out.

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great question! While I don’t have a definitive answer to this, not can I find any documentation about it, the following is my best guess.
      The preview monitor is likely doing one of a couple things-
      1. It’s rendering out a super quick frame view and approximating it. Why not even internally take a screen shot and automate the down sample save process and serve it to you in a temp file.
      Regardless of process, compressor is doing something to show you that preview and has a pretty good guess based on the frame output.
      2. It’s making a best guess of size based on codec duration etc.
      Bitrate can be variable- therefore is dependent of frames preceding and following it to determine ( based on codec )the best possible bitrate.
      In terms of single constant bitrate, i would imagine it could be something like updating the preview renderer to reference the bitrate, however if that’s possible or even correct, I can’t see.
      In terms of variable bitrate such a preview would not be possible as it would need to render sections of frames and still wouldn’t really be right as you can’t average the total from a sample.
      It sounds like you are trying to find the best look vs size and that is a science all it’s own.
      What I tend to do it render a compound clip out, or just a small section and send to compressor. I can compare the outputs.
      Lastly,
      Compressor is incredibly powerful, but many features changed or vanished. Over the last couple years there’s been issues with compressor working with other proapps (fcp + Motion).
      Apple has a feedback page for compressor for bugs and suggestions and they have written me back a few times when encountering issues.
      Thanks for the question.

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there and YES you can totally have it keep their source name.
      The best way I have found to do this is based on "LOCATIONS" in Apple Compressor.
      When you use compressor you choose your setting and Location.
      Set a custom Location- then use the inspector to set the "File name Format" field- theres a little dropdown + and choose "Source"
      Now it should have the same name as the source file.
      Hope that helps, and thanks for watching.

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience I’ve found compressor and exporting through compressor for fcpx, gives the smallest files with the highest quality out of different encoders.
      As all things it depends on your input and output.
      Overall however, compressor is designed as an app that gives more control, more options, than just exporting through fcpx.
      In compressor you can specify bitrate, normalize audio etc, there’s just more control to produce high quality given the options.

    • @pablomaresca
      @pablomaresca 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AVUltra and can you overpower the quality of FCPX export, setting the nítrate in Compressor? I mean, has Compressor better bitrates than FCPX?

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its a short 2 part answer-
      1. Yes you can set your own bitrates for exports in Apple compressors in codecs that allow for that.
      2. Once you set custom settings for codecs in Apple compressor, you can use those same compressor settings inside FCPX without having to go to compressor at all-
      Export using SHARE-> Add Destination. Then you can choose the custom one you set up right in FCPX.
      Hope that helps!

    Does this work for videos in the apple photos library? Or would I need to export my videos out of my library first for compressor to see the video files?

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm good question! Technically you should be able to put any supported video into compressor.
      if you have a lot of videos- use Final cut (if you have it) because there you can access your Photo library videos and send them to compressor. Tends to make things a little faster if you have a ton you want to transcode.
      Either way should work.

      So the best part about compressor is if you have a couple macs- you can use them all at the same time to render out stuff in Prores and DNxHD. so like imagine if you had a render that would take 1 hour- this way it would take around 23 minutes give or take. Compressor is super useful and a lot of people dont really know about it.

      Jeff- that sounds like something isn’t working right. Perhaps try reinstalling the apps again. Another thing is make sure all the app are up to date. So if you recently updated compressor but not final cut, this could be the problem. Fcp compressor and motion all need to be the same release version. Easiest way to do this is update all your apps. Check to see if there is a problematic codec. Does it do the same with single files? Outside of that, I’d contact Apple support.

    Did I miss it... You need to export max quality from FCPX first, to make sure that Compressor gets max quality file, right? I think I heard people saying that you can use compressor presets directly in FCPX when exporting, but not sure if it make sense. Comment very welcome

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      in newer versions of final cut, whenever you export and have proxies, now it asks if you want that or originals i believe.
      And yes, any presets you make in Compressor, you can bring into fcp.
      The whole point of Compressor is to dial in specifics settings for codecs, or watermarking, etc.
      Most people may not need compressor, but having it is a massive time saver.
      You could create a preset in compressor to do a 25% export, with timecode and watermark, and have a second full quality using a second preset and do it all in FCP after you set it up.

Also found File->Send to Compressor - it does the job perfectly. Will see how to import settings into FCPX, but I think sending to Compresson does the job for me very well for now. Thanks a lot for the reply.

      +Dilson Abraham
      Hi there.
      You should be able to bring those directly into final cut without need of compressor.
      When importing in fcpx by choosing make optimized media- it should make printed copies.
      Compressor is better suited for finishing than for pre flighting in my opinion.
      Hope that helps.

    • @DilsonAbraham
      @DilsonAbraham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did try that. But FCP X doesnt let me select the .m2t or .mts files. They appear greyed out.

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm- I was under the impression that the newest version of Final cut had it supported.
      If not, you'll likely need a third party tool.
      Whenever I have some specialty formats I typically use Handbrake which is a free transcoder. However you may only be able to output to an mp4.
      you might want to try it.
      Apologies I don't have more information for you.

    By quick look, using this Apple Compressor the result file (after processed by Compressor) will become "Bigger" file in size (from 1.6GB to Bigger file in any format??)

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apologies but that’s not entirely correct. File size is determined by a number of factors ranging from codec type, resolution, duration etc.
      Compressor typically makes file sizes SMALLER than the same export options in fcpx because you have control of several parameters not available in fcpx natively.
      An example being creating an h264 straight out of fcpx is typically going to be larger than one out of compressor because in compressor you can freely change the bitrate, number of passes, encoding type etc.
      Lastly- in video production large file sizes are very common and just part of creating high quality deliverables. Media has never been faster or cheaper ever and it’s common for things like a single episode of a tv show or a short film to run in double digits of terabytes
      Hope that helps and thanks for the question.

    Hello, I have a question, Do you know why the compressor slows down after ten or more clips get done? I store all my footage in a hard drive but now the software is not compressing anymore. Thanks for your help.

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. unfortunately there could be a lot of reasons.
      I typically am rendering lots of files at once and dont notice a slowdown due to more than 10 files.
      It could be your hard drive is set to sleep after x amount of time in your energy settings. It could be its choking on heavy transcodes of multipass h.264 or something equally intense.
      It could be the projects you are sharing. Is it from FCPX? Is it from Motion? Is it rendering and transcoding?
      Compressor is great for a couple things-
      Transcoding, batch Renders and Multi machine rendering.
      I find if i have lots of heavy effects from third parties in Motion or FCPX- compressor can have a harder time with it- especially if you are going straight from fcpx or motion to h.264.
      As a good rule of the, export your master as prores, the render will go much faster than if you are rendering to a deliverable user format like h.264
      Once you have your masters, then transcode them.
      Keep in mind if you are trying to make the most of parallel rendering (multiple frames at once) not all codecs support that.
      Hope that helps, and thanks for watching.

      Hmm.
      I haven't actually heard of this particular problem. I'd make sure you're on the newest compressor version. The only thing I can think of is the chance that if you were using GoPro footage. GoPro uses a gpu accelerated codec which might give some issues, but I haven't heard of it just stopping by like that.
      That's got to be really annoying.
      I'd also reach out to apple and fill a bug report. If you search on google for compressor feedback, you should be able to get to a page where they will read your comment.

      There’s custom preset, and custom destination. The UI can be a little tricky but I make my own preset by hitting the add button and then container- typically .mov and from there in the video inspector- I set the codec and not rate.
      If you are using Vimeo, you can duplicate the video sharing preset and customize it. That typically gives me better results.

    Hello Stanislaw
    I was wondering if you can help me with something. I am using a Logitech 930e and I have a question. I record videos with a green screen so that I can have a background in my videos. After recording these videos I place them in Final Cut Pro. However when I record the videos with the green screen and then place the videos in Final Cut Pro the videos do not look as clear as they do when I see myself in the camera. The video resolution seems to be distorted. It looks fine when the video is minimized but when I view it at 100% full screen ut looks very unclear and distorted a little bit. I have my video settings in Final Cut Pro at 1920 x 1080. Can you tell me what I can do or what settings in Final Cut Pro I should set it to in order to get the video recordings from the green screen to be more clear?

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well this is really a bit rate and codec question.
      Long story short- by the time you Bring it into final cut- you are viewing it at full res and it’s a low bit rate with a lot of compression.
      Is it an h264 video you are bringing in?
      Did you use a lot of light for the green screen? Those two things usually make getting a good key a lot more challenging.
      I wouldn’t really recommend a webcam for full quality green screening because of the compression and quality of video they tend to output.

    • @starttofinishpodcasting3721
      @starttofinishpodcasting3721 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here the thing though, when I use a webcam with Screenflow it comes out great however when I use Quicktime to record a video it comes out good but then when I export the quicktime video into Final Cut Pro it looks distorted and the video quality is not good. But when I export a video from Screenflow into Final Cut Pro X it looks great unlike the export into Final Cut Pro X from Quicktime.

    • @AVUltra
      @AVUltra  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well with screenflow what is the codec and Rez? If you are using QuickTime try matching that. Otherwise it could be a QuickTime issue.

    • @starttofinishpodcasting3721
      @starttofinishpodcasting3721 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I figured out what it was. In Final Cut Pro right at the top of the video window there is a "View" dropdown option. In that dropdown option you can choose "Better Video Performance or Better Video Quality. Mine was checked for Better Video Performance. As soon as I changed it and selected Better Video Quality it fixed the distortion and bad video quality right away. All it took was a simple check of a specific option. Had I not found this out I would have been looking into a whole bunch of unnecessary things. Thank God I figured it out.

The TV station stated that I need to have a AVCHD (M2T) format. Also needs to be 1080i and not 1080P. I am not sure how I would do this. Can you suggest how I can go by doing this?

      Hi there-
      I might be wrong but i dont think M2T is supported in compressor (at least with the stock compressor you might need to install additional codecs from the camera manufacturer)
      And changing from 1080 progressive to interlaced would be set in your inspector under video properties.
      Cant help anymore than that.

    Have you done some export to webm format? I'm looking for a fix to export overlays with alpha channel from pro res 4444 to webmformat with alpha layers intact

      I havent been able to get a clean alpha with webM, and honestly doubt its possible specifically because its already so compressed. I dont think its possible without heavy filtering on the fly and really then its not worth even having the alpha and youre better off with a Key instead. If this is for OBS- Theres way way way better solutions out there. Im using Resolume for Live stream composite, key or whatever.
      Apologies and good luck.

    A more unintuitive app I haven't seen in a very long time. Kudos to Apple for reminding how irksome a crappy UX job can be.

      I use to think so too. I thought why even have this here at all and why is everything buried in different tabs? Its pretty incredible they took qmaster and a lot of the compressor tools and post render action things and simplified it all into a single app with different views. The things that changed my mind overall was that compressor compared to other media encoding software (Handbrake, Adobe media Encoder, Sorenson squeeze to name a few) Compressor is pretty self explanatory for those who go out of their way to purchase it, and it looks really nice, and offers windows setup only in ways you need/want.
      If you are someone looking for specific codecs/bitrates/etc. finding things in compressor is fairly straightforward, but it does take a bit of exploration and digging in a help file for certain things.
      Once you understand there terminology they use everything makes sense.
      You bring up something interesting though.
      How would you want the UX of compressor to be outside of final cut? I imagine the core things to care about are the before after, presets, destination, review and cluster.
      Overall it could use a facelift, but I look at adobe media encoder it looks like a spreadsheet from 1990.
      Thanks for the comment.

    Great video, I have a question about rendering video using compressor. How do you get clear HD videos from Compressor. This is something I've struggled with since I started using motion 5 and compressor. Here's a link to a video I rendered using 1080p setting in Compressor. vimeo.com/197254222 if you have any tips, pointers, or advice I'm all ears. Thanks for this tutorial.

      +Albert Stephens Hey thanks for the question! It's tough to say without seeing the original file but from just looking at it- it seems just a little fuzzy. Is your motion set to full quality etc?
      If it is- keep in mind that h.264 is a delivery codec that's really compressed. Stuff on Vimeo and TH-cam will always look a little worse than like an avid or pro res file.
      If you're committed to h.264 try upping your bit rate. Bitrate can make a big difference.
      Hope that helps!
      Thanks for watching.

      After a really quick look over it looks like your file is set to "normal" quality instead of "best"
      Changing it to best already smoothes out some of the edges.
      Another think I would do is soften the image up a little, Very little is super sharp in real life, Id throw a camera in there and give just a little depth of field. It smoothes out the edges, adds a nice little blur and gives a little depth.
      Hope that helps.
      Nice logo design/extrusion too!
      Happy New Years!
