@@isanBen Utterly useless is a huge exaggeration and misconception. If it was utterly useful it wouldn't be a widely used technique for watermelon production on commercial farms. Like in grafting fruit trees there's a benefit mostly in disease prevention and allowing growth in various soils and soil conditions. (Water)melon seedlings and adult plant have roots that are more susceptible to fungal diseases like fusarium wilt. And especially in wet climate or wet early seasons the plants can die back reducing crop yield. Pumpkin/squash rootstock are almost complete resistant to this. Allowing the plant to grow better. Some say it also contributes to firmer fruit.
