    In 1960 a high school diploma got you a factory job for life, a car, a house, and enough to support a family. Today a high school diploma will get you fries with that McDouble.

      Except for specialized positions which require a specific license or extra training, you can still go get a factory job, it just means you are gonna work a crap schedule and have no social life.

      Maybe? If your willing to accept that. I dropped out of high school, learned a trade and have a little house, car, kid and enjoy life. The problem is there this thought that people deserve more then that for some reason.

    My dad paid for his whole undergrad by sweeping floors throughout college. A job sweeping floors today can barely pay for an electric bill, let alone the cost of a four-year college education.

      my boyfriend went to college at UNO (university of new orleans) for a chemistry degree, took him 5 years due ti an elective. he got scholarships that paid for his entire education and has no student loan dept. he is 7 year younger then i am. he also didnt get a job in his field some 4 years later. he just got lucky. A lot of the problem is people thinking they NEED a college education because the parents expect them. most baby boomers didnt go to college.
      I was born right as the generation shifted and just fall into the bracket.
      most kids my generation were raised to be the first in the family to go to college. a lot of families worked a lot of trade jobs to support their families. sometimes working more then 1 job. a lot of the work was waiting tables, being bus boys, working in construction, etc.
      in the 80s the economy was booming so there were more higher paying jobs, affordable housing. once bush went into office our econ tanked, through mismanagement etc. in housing a lot of McMasions were built just for investment homes, that you would move into, live in and sell high rinse repeat. where back then you typically grew up in 1 home, which you later inherent.
      things we dont think about is the 90s did see a spike in teen pregnancy so much it was called an epidemic. so you had a generation of teen parents trying to raise kids.

      Baby boomers were set up well for life. Everything came together for them in their generation. Largely in part by the generation before who had been through the great depression and did not want the next generation to go through what they went through .
      They think somehow they are the only generation in history to realize that working hard would bring automatic success. If this is true,how come people in sweat shops are not business owners in Missouri?
      Fact is, the generation before provided shade, baby boomers took the shade of future generations and have such a big generation population to keep themselves in power.
      Woman once said that if millenials worked during the summers like she did they could pay for college themselves. Says it all for how out of touch baby boomers are.

That's not even factoring in rent, car, insurance, basic necessities, etc, because those have skyrocketed in price because of inflation. The federal minimum wage has stayed the same for over a decade now.

      There's a difference between working hard and working long hours. Working hard means building towards a long term goal with some short term pain. If you're just working long shifts at McDonald's that's not called hard work, that's called being too lazy to learn skills that can improve your situation.

      I'm 32 and I no longer work hard from my personal experience hard work is seldom rewarded, 5 years a go I even changed career from being a chef to driving a truck just because the job is less physically demanding with the added bonus that it pays more and I get weekends off. I used to work very hard but I'm just too old and tired for that nonsense these days, I'll do what I'm contractually obliged to do no more no less.

      Jim Heath 86% of this country's population lives in and around urban areas. I don't think that you understand that the rent for a basic (non-luxury) studio apartment in a city neighborhood (that is NOT in NYC, L.A., Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, San Francisco or D.C) that isn't completely crime ridden, doesn't have vacant/burned out houses, and doesn't have a roach or rat/mouse problem, and is near public transportation (because you can't afford a car, maintenance and insurance) will cost you at least $900/mo. And a basic one bedroom starts at $1200. Basic meaning: heat/ac (maybe), utilities not included, coin-op washers and dryers in the basement. No elevators, no in unit washer/dryer, no gym, no private parking. For the aforementioned large cities, double the cost of everything for the basic apartments and triple it for the luxury apartments. Cities, especially large cities are where the jobs are.

      Jim Heath, god forbid you don't think we are making sacrifices. We are risking near god everything to live anywhere close to your generation. And a lot of us can't. I'm working at least 64+ hours every week. I don't socialize. I recently got a new used car. My car insurance ever year by myself costs $3500. That is the cheapest. The second cheapest option is car insurance for $5,000. And my car isn't even worth $5000. How much would it cost if I could go back under my mom's insurance plan? $1200 lol to register 2 cars. I could just pay that for her and it would be literally thousands cheaper. God damn sick joke. I could then pay for the cell phone bill, the electricity and whatever else for her if I didn't get the car. Except, I gave my previous car to my mom so she can get to places because she can't afford to buy a car. Not even a car that is over 20 years old. I told you, we will sacrifice near god damn everything. Selfish prick... Hell, I introduced her to netflix to cut her costs down. No more home telephone or cable. Just internet and netflix.

    My big complaint with this assortment of people is that all of the millennials are comparatively high ranking and rich, or relatively carefree and doing what they love regardless. An entrepreneur with a successful business, a communications specialist (which I assume is in marketing and thus high paying. Even though her friends are on contract work, she isn't), and a guy in the arts who's doing what he loves and not caring so much about making money.
    Where are the millennials that work two-three jobs and still barely survive? Where are the millennials working unpaid overtime with no benefits? Where are the millennials who haven't been allowed to work full time because no jobs hire them for it? Where are the millennials with >$50,000 in student debt their parents forced them into? Where are the millennials who have been applying for jobs at every local business for the past year and gotten nothing?
    Virtually every American millennial I know fits into one of those categories, if not multiples of them, and the only working one that doesn't is a government-paid emergency dispatcher. The only people that don't "work hard" that I know are ones that are dealing with severe, untreated mental or physical barriers. Bipolar disorder, panic attacks, autism, gender dysphoria, sciatica, etc. Compared to how much my parents worked, their parents worked, and most baby boomers I've seen worked, millennials work way harder for much less and end up far more burned out as a result. My dad whines all the time about having to drive through traffic to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week at a job he's held for the past 30 years, and drinks himself into a stupor on Saturdays as a result. He gets full benefits. He makes $130,000 a year. His job is as secure as secure can be, and he works doing something he's liked enough to do for 30 years. Most baby boomers I know are either in the same state he is, are retired and happy, or got laid off at some point in the past decade and haven't held a job since because now they're dealing with the current working environment.
    The "millennials" were hardly a valid representation of what millennials across the United States have to deal with, just like I would have preferred they get at least one white, male, conservative baby boomer. Like my dad.

It does really depend on who you meet because all the millennials I know are working very hard for their future, myself included. There was a period where I had to work night shifts at an apple warehouse from 3pm-till 2am and then wake up at 6am for school and stay their all day to get my homework and other projects done. I'm not here to whine lol I'm just hear to say give us more credit. Lets be honest we are living in different times. I think the lazy part comes from a different version of hard work. Back then working two and three jobs to attain your goals was normal, schooling wasn’t pushed as much... hard work was, making money right out of high school was more important... so I think they refer to millennials as lazy because they tend to pro long the work part by going to school and then taking a sub par job and work only one job at that but then also complain about not having enough money. From one end it’s simple, work more hours, get a better job or get two jobs, while the millennial side tends to add that they are doing school and working or they are working a job not in their field so it doesn’t pay great, but also don’t acknowledge that all of it is personal choice... you chose to work multiple jobs or you chose to go to school and take on a simple job to wait for your dream job... that’s a really general way of explaining it... but I’m just pretty sure that’s why millennials are considered lazy.

    I have to disagree with the woman in black on the first point. As a disabled woman, we don’t get “hand outs”. It takes so much time and energy and effect to fill out the reams of paperwork necessary to get disability. I was BORN disabled. You have no idea how much I would LOVE to even work at Disney Store in the mall. But when I applied, I was interviewed on the spot. My power wheelchair could not fit behind the counter. And they didn’t know what else to do with me since I cannot walk. Even if I had been hired, Disability/SSI takes $1 for every $2 you make. Whatever you make at work gets deducted from disability benefits. Any increase in income counts against you in subsidized housing. The system is built to keep disabled people poor.
    I’m currently in college taking classes online toward my Psychology degree. I have a 3.2 GPA and do freelance writing whenever possible. Because my disability is permanent, I will always qualify for benefits on the basis of my medical records. However, I’m working hard to make sure that’s not my only income for the rest of my life.
    My disabled dad worked from age 14 until he was told to stop by his doctors. He often worked either 40-50 hours in a factory or had a second job.
    Don’t imply disability equals laziness. We want to work but we can’t. And the system stacks as much against us as possible.

Boomers like to act like millenials are lazy and entitled because we don't get everything we want, yet in reality we're not asking or working for anything more then they were. We want the house, the car, and the family. The difference is your generation was able to get these things around the age we are now, however its starting to seem impossible for us to gain these things through traditional methods because of how messed up the industries are. Jobs aren't paying as much and house costs are through the roof, it would take us atleast 10 more years to afford the things y'all were able to get in your late 20s-early 30s. This is why we don't settle for regular 9 to 5 jobs anymore, not because we don't want to work but because those jobs aren't enough anymore! The people that succeed in our generation are the people that became entrepreneurs and found their OWN way to success, and that's what more of us are going to have to do to get ahead.

You paid into social security and got it when you reached the age to qualify. A company hired you and gave you health insurance and you worked there for a majority of your life. None of those are possible today. The younger generation works more jobs and more hours in a week to not be able to put a downpayment on a simple house, not be able to afford insurance (of course no benefits from their multiple jobs), and will not see social security. Also the majority are in debt because the generation before them told them they HAD to go to college to get jobs. Your bachelors doesn't get you an entry level position. You masters MAY get you that position. May.

    THIS resonated so much with me. I couldn't agree more. My father is a narcissistic babyboomer who didn't even attend college and is the first to judge if a person doesn't attend college or struggle through college. He doesn't seem to understand in depth how mental health is as important as physical health. He comes from a generation that's more religious, sexist, toxic etc. How the hell do these parents think they're setting us up for success? Of course, not every single babyboomer is like that, but you get the idea.

    I really liked what the one girl said about lack of incentive to work harder. I'm gonna just use wage as an example. I went to college and now have almost 50k in debt, housing prices in my area are expensive, jobs say the want 20 years of experience but will pay 15/hour. Leadership and executive roles, many of which are held by baby boomers have created an economy where even when you do work hard, get educated, and try to be responsible you're incredibly likely to fail.
    I sometimes feel so overwhelmed by just how bleak the future can be. I have a decent job, but am terrified that if I loose it I have to find another that pays just as well to even survive. Baby boomers grew up in a time when job hopping was not only easy, but when you could loose a job and not really have to worry for a good few months. I make 40k/year, am single, with no children, and still live paycheck to paycheck. Not because I partied all of my teen year or because I am irresponsible with money, but because of student loans, paying for health insurance that my employer doesn't provide, and paying for medical bills that I didn't ask for. this story isn't uncommon for a lot of use millennials.

      dwade this is not a great line of thinking. Not everyone can have a top income job. Whether it’s geographic restriction, health restriction, or what ever else can come up. Your comment smells of privilege. Saying that people just aren’t working hard enough or making the right career choice implies they had a huge amount of choices. My moms health tanked and I had to move back home to help support her, but you’re right, I should just make a better career choice and throw her to the curb. I’m sure it’s my fault the local economy is horrible too.

I saw a hospital bill for a birth that was like 100 bucks. And now we are required to pay for our health care. People cant even afford medication. They could work an entry level job and afford a home. People these days are so indebted because of their college loans. You cant just have one parent work anymore and live comfortably. There isnt a state where a person can work fulltime and afford rent. Inflation has gone up so very much and some baby boomers dont realize how privileged they were in that regard.

      @@reesejames7240 I know this is a pretty old generation, but speaking of entitlement: the rise in depression has absolutely no way anything to do with social media, school or parents. Depression in the west is far higher than say depression in India, yet in India people have it far worse. All the things that we can complain about in our society today, we can only complain about because we don't have to worry about survival. Food and shelter is a guarantee for many. The rise in depression has a lot to do with the difference in how we raise our children. When young minds lack obstacles and a sense of competition they will re-direct that stress onto trivial things.

  • @jmakes3745
    @jmakes3745 6 ปีที่แล้ว +938

    Maybe its just me being too cynical but these episodes and conversations have the opportunity to be amazing but they just never fulfilled their potential.
    > They never discuss the core principles and philosophies behind the question - for example in the 'my children will grow up in a better world than I did' nobody asked or even tried to define what is 'better,' what the aim of societies and the world should be, what this utopia world vision is were working towards? Instead I just heard cliches like 'you've not set us up for success' ... 'the expectations are changing' ...
    > There's very little quantitive and objective substance to the conversation. They all use vague emotive language, referencing personal experiences and whilst this is great, if you want to have a really interesting and thought provoking conversation you need some 'meat' so to speak. For example, in Steven Pinkers TED talk he discusses societal progression over the years by actually analysing facts and figures.
    Sorry to be so critical, just feel these videos have so much potential for changing perceptions yet you just end up with a bunch of people saying the same lines we've all heard before :(

    • @HomeVidEdd
      @HomeVidEdd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      I don't think that was ever the objective of these conversations. I think they didn't want conversation to get too analytical and number heavy. They just wanted to get to the common ground through the basics. Get just deep enough to recognize that we have some type of unity and civility

    • @whm_w8833
      @whm_w8833 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      They are taking average Americans with some success. Even though it is not engaging like Pinker, we know what we think, feel and concern about more than before the video. Pinker is an expert and thinker. The people in this video are typical Americans within a niche. You have a point though; we can always strive to know more.

    • @jmakes3745
      @jmakes3745 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Neptune - I think you hit on the most important point - conversations about politics often get really heated and consequently the discussions turn from really understanding each others view points and logic to just a shouting match. This is why its so important that the people in the videos really get to discuss the root philosophy and logic behind the opponents views and understand how and why they differ! Instead what we see in this video is the two sides saying they're two points of views (all be it in a calm manner which is some process at least) but it isn't really of any value for any genuine understanding and appreciation of others, and therefore critique and questioning of ones own views.

    • @jmakes3745
      @jmakes3745 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Real discussion, and depth of questioning/ conversation doesn't have to take any more time than what we see in this video. The only difference is instead of asking and stating surface level points about WHAT you believe, you talk about the moral and philosophical principles behind those beliefs. I don't know if you've ever listened to a podcast called the 'Moral Maze' but in it they are able to get a person onto the show and really question and evaluate their position in less than 5 minutes, so I think its not true to say it would take too long.

      JMakes with that in mind what about the baby boomers that were mentally ill, and as a result treated poorly and hospitalized for easily treated illnesses today. Domestic abuse victims had little resources, addicts/alcoholics had very little options in terms of treatment as well, where as today we have fully established and accessible programs (12 step, or inpatient) and less stigma surrounding these circumstances.Every generation has a struggle with poverty. Although I agree with most of what you’re saying, I think it’s very naive to only consider the economic stand point. It just doesn’t feel right to me to complain about our situation, and claim we have it worse knowing we can’t group all baby boomers or millennials. It’s too broad of a statement.

    Weird that nobody is concerned about the environmental problems. Lack of rain, flashfloods, loss of ecosystems, incl. animals and plants. In Germany we have 70% less insects then 20 years ago and it's affecting everything else. We're supposed to feed birds throughout the summer now, because the few food bird parents find is barely enough for their kids, but not for them. Also lots more natural disasters. Does seem way more pressing to me than national debt, as it's not reversible once it's too late. It may not be as big of a problem but it is a legitimate one. When the Great Recession happened the debt was a lot smaller so the Obama administration was able to fund the stimulus package that alleviated some of its effects. With Trump passing his tax cuts for the rich and increasing the already huge military budget the deficit has reached $1 trillion, so it's not clear if the government could even afford to do that again, and the effects of climate change have the potential to cause a much more massive downturn.

They were born after WW2, a booming economy and even more babies; which means a lot of them were far more spoiled than they say young people are. And it's not like we haven't got climate change either, or us fearing for our own futures because we have to work 3x harder and longer just to afford a roof over us.
      And never mind the fact that we're in an almost worldwide lockdown because of the virus, fighting social injustices, and are losing each and every one of our hero's and role models every day.
