Welcome to Day 3 of our 'Five Days of Christmas' micro series. Here we are looking at Secondary Dominants, which is the method of using the dominant chord (Chord 5 in your scale) of your dominant chord in a key.
All week, we are giving out free tutorials every day from the 21st to the 25th December 2020, alongside a chance to win every ThinkSpace Education course! Daily prizes of a short course of your choice.

I love how it got to the point where I just sit there and listen to him explain what secondary dominants are despite knowing very well what they are. If Guy explains something to you, you listen.

I have a degree in this stuff but it is a joy to hear you explain it so beautifully. You make it as simple as possible to understand- but no simpler.

Loving the Christmas series. I have already completed the How to Write Music and Learn Music Theory courses. I can highly recommend them to anyone. The style of presentaion you do makes learning, what to most can seem complex and difficult subject, a much simpler and enjoyable experience. There is also so much to be had from all of your TH-cam videos. From those seeking to learn something new or to others that maybe just need a pointer in the right direction, or to seek out some inspiration to get writing something new, there is a huge amount to be learned.
Thanks for all the great content.
To you, your family, barky dog and all of the Thinkspace Team,
Stay safe and have a great Christmas.

I have been making my own music for 30 years now. Self taught... never even bothered to read up on it. I am today years old when I found out certain cords just "work". Thanks for explaining; and incentivizing me on reading up on musical theory!

I wish that I would have had a music teacher like you when I was studying theory in college, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. I would have had a better model for a career in music. However, everything works out the way that it's meant to and here I am now with you as my teacher... all is well. Happy Christmas, Guy!

  • @PrinceWesterburg
    @PrinceWesterburg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This was explained to me totally differently and I've been scratching my head how to use it for 30 years!
I was told, if you have a dom7 chord, it wants to resolve down a 5th to the tonic but you can replace the tonic with any other chord or another dom7.
Unless you play trad jazz, this isn't much use but your version makes sense!
Edit: Now PLEASE make a video on chromatic mediants or submediants! :D

  • @ComposerRocks
    @ComposerRocks 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I think of secondary dominants like this:
In a chord progression where a chromatic chord would add some welcome color from the diatonic chords of the scale, select any degree of the scale, other than the tonic, to which you want to go ("target chord"); but instead of going to the target chord immediately, go to its V7 chord first and THEN to the target chord.
    So, in key of C Maj, instead of, say, I - IV - vi - V - I (C - F - Am - G - C), where Am is the target chord in the progression, try I - IV - III7 - vi - I (C - F - E7 - Am - G - C) .

You can alter any chord degree within the 12 notes into a dominate chord.
I to V is just a REFERENCE...it's just EASIER to VSIUALISe and play on the GUITAR
becuase the Lower 4 strings are tune to PERFECT 4th....
if you count from the perfect to Octave..it's a perfect 4th INTERVAL.
    You simply have to used to B dim into C or B dim/G ( G7) into C.
it's the SECOND arpeggio of a MAJOR chord that acts like a leading tone.
    G B into C or 3 into 4
You could also play C Maj into F min Ab Maj G7 into C MAJOR
If you learn other scales..such as A Harmonic min ..you 'll simply learn how to play
    E7 into A min....
You'll simply get used to playing a dominant chord into Major or minor chord
if you learn more scales....such as A Harmonic min b2 = Bb lyd #6.
It's just enharmonic of #6 and b7 has the same pitch
You could play A min Bb7 into Eb Maj7 Ab min G7 into C MAJOR
you could even play A7 into D min G7 into C MAJOR
You'll simply get use to play dominant chord into the 4th chord above it..as Major or min
from any of the 12 chord degress
    A min F#7 into B min E7 into A min
    or
    A min F# 7 into B maj7 E maj7 into A min
    As I stated the b7 or maj7 isnt the leading tone...the maj3 into 4...is .
it dosnt have to be treated a pivot chord...it could just be for SOUND
    A min B7 C#7 into F# min B dim/G# A min,,,instead of E7 into A min or A MAJOR
even if you played into an A MAJOR chord,,,you could simply
Play A Maj D dim Eb Maj7 Ab Min G7 into C MAJOR.....just to get back to C as C MAJOR
again...Something FAMILAR so the LISTENER has some sort of REFERENCE
i didnt necceassary changed Keys...i just played into different chord degrees
    within the 12 Notes
I just know different scales..that's all..
3 into 4 works everytime...no matter where you play it from.

Besides the price.

I'm always confused by terms in Music theory. When I saw the title of secondary dominants...I thought this would be about dominant sevenths or possibly ninths ...even elevenths. Very understandable though.

So secondary dominants could also be considered a momentary key change utilizing the circle of 5ths.. and f major, utilizing c as it's dominant would also be a momentary key change and or modulation.. the ti,do or 7,8 half step resolution is I suppose key to the tension and resolution defining the given key.. circle of 5ths to my imagination has more of a earthly feel to it, and circle of 4ths(or melodic circle of 5ths as some circles call it) and what my music professor "dick grove" refered to it. have more of a spacey tonality.. clockwise 5ths, counterclockwise 4ths is another way to remember it.. stands to reason why circle of 5ths has a earthly feel why 4ths are spacey. 4ths defy time and 5ths March forward in it... Suspend a triad replacing the 3rd with 4th close your eyes and your floating through the stars, sharp the 4th (lydian and your floating through space communicating with your creator, call and response with aeolian (6th natural minor) to 4th lydian#4 and your creating a story, lol go into locrian 7th (half diminished) and your falling into a unknown black whole, quickly jump onto the staircase of the wholetone scale and jump off onto the diminished to pull your way back down to earth just a half step😭 away back to the earthly dominant 7th chord and hum ti do in solfeggio to land back into reality of your 1 ionian major chord (home base) lol.. sorry I was thinking out a chromatic story.. pentatonic scales such as minor, major and dominant pentatonic are also good ways to break up things using the 2,4, and 6 of a major scale as jumping points of chromaticism (momentary key change).. thanks for doing this video, inspiration to revisit Harmony and theory to refresh things again 👍👍

I've always felt that the Secondary Dominant as a term sounds a bit like the usual dominatrix, Madam LaBelle, is out for the day on a BDSM training course and so her secondary dominant, the equally delightful and frightening Lady Chains, is taking her appointments for the day...
... That said, I guess it could be argued that "Five of Five" sounds like a 90s pop group tribute band....
Don't even get me started on the time that I ordered a staccatissimo ice cream instead of stracciatella whilst in Rome...
