Anaesthesia and MRI: A Real Challenge

  • An MRI or magnetic resonance imaging is a medical imaging procedure using a magnetic field to generate images of organs in the body.
Sometimes an anaesthetic or sedative is needed when performing this procedure in children, uncooperative patients or patients who cannot lie still for the procedure.
Giving an anaesthetic for this procedure poses some unique challenges for the anaesthesiologist in view of the limited access to the patient and the strong magnetic field in the MRI environment.
Join me as I walk you along how we go about administering anaesthesia to these patients.

Well this is horrible to hear. I'm supposed to have an MRI under anesthesia next month. Now that you've told me how risky it is, I'm canceling!

When you perform sedation for a Clastrophobic patient, who simply cannot tolerate the MRI, and has had past attempt, and had to be removed from the machine being unable to complete the scan, Do you use inhalational anesthetics, or do you do something as simple as a bit of Midazolam, with a Propofol infusion? What's the usual mcg/kg/min you set the Propofol infusion? And in this example, the patient has no airway concerns, does not have Down Syndrome, or any other conditions that involve Mental Retardation, but is simply an adult male with severe to profound clastrophobia. No Known Drug Allergies! Let's say this patient is a 35 Y/O male, 70 KG, 170 cm, No Alcohol/Drug use, for a simple Full Brain MRI with contrast. No Obstructive/Central Sleep Apnea. Non-Smoker. Only current meds are Vitamins.

If it's so risky why is it so common to have sedation for an MRI?
