Keep Water OUT of Your House: Installing a Landscape Drain - The Great Outdoors 6701

  • Often times, a water problem on the inside can be fixed from the Great Outdoors. The following is a list of instructions for installing drain tile adjacent to the house’s foundation. The drain tile will allow excess water from gutters and “run-off” to be channeled into drainage pipes. NOTE: The amount of materials may vary depending on the length of the drain tile required.
    List of Materials Needed
    - slotted drain tile
    - weed barrier fabric
    - weed fabric “anchor pins”
    - load of gravel
    - drain tile connectors (“Y” or “T” depending on position of downspout)
    List of Tools Needed
    - spade or shovel
    - all-purpose cutting tool
    - sharp pair of scissors
STEPS FOR INSTALLING A DRAIN TILE
    STEP 1
Dig a trench along the foundation of the house, corresponding to the problem interior wall. Only make the trench about 6-8 inches deep and 6-8 inches wide.
    STEP 2
Next, line the trench with weed barrier fabric. Use anchor pins to hold the fabric in place. The fabric will not only keep weeds out of the trench, but prevent the gravel from sinking into the mud.
    STEP 3
Cut the drain tile to the appropriate length and place it in the trench. Don’t forget to add enough length to connect to the downspout. If you are connecting your drain tile to existing solid (non-slotted) drain tile, attach the pieces using the appropriate connector.
    STEP 4
    Fill the trench with gravel.
    STEP 5
Connect the drain tile to your downspout, using the appropriate connector. Incoming rainfall will flow through the gravel, enter the tile through the slots, and flow away from the house.

You need to install some catch basins to catch immediate surface water. The slotted pipe is mostly used for water coming up through the slots in the bottom of the pipe. You also need to show the discharge to daylight or to a sump basin so that a sump pump can discharge to daylight. In addition, you should paint the side of the house with liquid rubber to seal it, e.g., blackjack 57.

I have water build up next to one room of the home. I’m going to concrete from the wall onto a channel drain which will connect onto the drainage main pipe beneath. I believe taking the water away from the home is a better approach all with schedule 40 PVC.
In principal this French drain will help but it’ll be harder to maintain and keep clean. I think PVC with holes acting as a French drain will be easier to maintain.
Possibly have a PVC drain with holes beneath the soil, fill with concrete and slope the concrete away from the home be a better solution? What do you think?
We will never know unless we go back to homes which had/have drainage issues and to go back a few years later to check what worked best. Thank You.

Just to summarize important comments you need solid pipe on a graded trench; you need to seal concrete foundation and use foundation membrane to seal and ward off water from foundation; the pipe line is covered with fabric and needs to go to a catch basin, use gravel to cover the pipe ...do not cover with soil because soil, water equals plants or weeds

Not sure if im a fan of curtain drain using perforated pipe...As it may allow some water to escape but can also escalate water seepage out of the slits and back in the foundation...Also while he had it dug out...He should have brushed liquid rubber on the foundation ledge...and then take thick mil plastic against the liquid rubber and under the pipe ..The liquid rubber would seal the area penetrating the inside...Which is most likely at floor level...He does have a convincing way of expressing his technique 😅

This was done wrong. The trench should be lined with heavy duty plastic, not weed barrier. With his installation, water will pour directly down the outside of the foundation to the basement. What you want is the water pouring into the trench to be stopped by the plastic and then carried away by the pipe.

There are several things wrong in this video.
You should never have a French Drain that close to a building, you are now allowing water to be adjacent to the structure sub grade. You want all FDs several feet away from the house, with a dirt or otherwise impermeable barrier and a graded slope at the surface. The exception is if you are building a foundation drain, but that has to be at the level of the footer and it doesn't look like they dug that far in the video.
Second, you never want to incorporate downspout drainage in a system with slotted pipe. By having a tee into the French Drain, you are now injecting all that downspout water into the space adjacent to the foundation. It will be even worse if the discharge pipe becomes clogged or even partially obstructed. You can run both systems in the same trench, but the downspout water should be in a parallel solid pipe.
I would be surprised if the drainage installation in this video doesn't make the problem worse.

  • @yellow2000SR
    @yellow2000SR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

LOL, you never T downspouts into a perimeter drain. You’re also not suppose to put them right against the house. Regrade the soil 1” drop for every foot away from the house. For ever 1’ of basement depth, you go 1’ out for that drop. 6’ basement = 6’ out from house and 6” down. If you do this, or cant quite go that distance due to surrounding elevations, at end of that drop is where you may need to add a french or perimeter drain…. and DO NOT T downspouts into it. Run their own PVC smooth pipe to daylight so they dont clog with debris.

The water will flow up against the foundation and thru the stones. The weed barrier will slow it from entering the pipe, allowing some it to seep down and eventually into the house. For that type of system to work, it needs very, very little pitch or slope, enough for water to flow to the solid pipe, but almost level to pick up water. If the back of the pipe is too high, the water level won't come high enough to get in. The pipe will never fully drain to the outlet, so water will seep out the bottom and keep the dirt against the foundation wet longer, inviting mold. The depth of the pipe in relation to the footer is critical.
As mentioned earlier, needed to build dirt and hopefully grass away from the house and build any bottom feeding drain at least 4 feet away. How not to install drainage.

Until it clogs with leaves. You can run it along the house but don't use a pipe with holes in it. For one thing the water coming off the house is full of contaminants and you don't want those seeping into the ground close to the house. You also don't want to use gravel. You want solid ground around your house. You will also need a catch basin that you can empty when it gets full of debris and that should be about 10 feet away from the house. If there's a low spot where water is pooling next to the house then you use the piping with holes in it but you run it directly away from your house. Or you can dig a vertical drain and just dig a couple of feet below the foundation and then just put rocks at 2 feet depth and then bury. But it only charges the water line an inch or so above ground.

This a messy approach. Dirt will eventually get on top of those stones work its way down, spawning weeds. It' better to wrap the pipe in a fabric sock (which they sell at home depot). It keeps dirt out of the pipe and allows you to put a layer of stones, then dirt on top of the pipe.

I'm usually on my side when I lay the pipe, but the slot can be side up or side down.

    No. Just no.
You don't want a french drain that close to your foundation.
You wouldn't want to drain a downspout into slotted pipe.
You really shouldn't be using that crappy landscaping material.
Please, don't try this at home...

This would actually be way way worse for your house. You're asking the water to come up against your basement walls. Once that crappy pipe fills up with dirt you're gonna have a swimming pool in all that gravel right up against your house.

What he needs is a true French drain, cuz that's about the dumbest way I've seen to "fix" a water drainage issue...

    • @hotmetalslugs
      @hotmetalslugs ปีที่แล้ว +8

This isn’t as bad as it seems. That drain tile will not easily fill with dirt or clog.
Still, would be better to put the trench about another 2 ft from the wall or so. Grade the dirt at the house so it’s higher and slopes down toward the trench. Everything else is fine.

There are several ways it can be addressed. But that is a standard exterior solution. You can see all kinds of professional companies doing them here on TH-cam. You obviously don't do this kind of work for a living.
You could also treat the old foundation down to the footer (parge coat with cement to fill all cracks, coat entire foundation down to footer with foundation coating, then cover the foundation coating all the way down to the footer with 5 mil plastic. You can also use cement caulk with silicone around any pipes going through the foundation after the parge coat (inside and out).
Or do a drain tile system on the inside and slope the perforated pipe and rocks so that all the water goes into 1 or more sump pumps and pump the water out away from the house.
But its probably better to stop the water from coming into the basement with an exterior solution than pumping it back out once it's gotten into your house to prevent humidity and or mold issues.

The mistake you made was following this advice. Videos like this should be quality checked and removed from TH-cam, as this is the type of misinformation that will cause a lot of problems for a home owner. If you want quality advice, check out Apple Drains on TH-cam; he actually knows what he's talking about.

No No No. If your collecting water from downspouts you use a solid pipe not perforated. All this guy is doing is distributing the downspout water to the foundation wall lol.
