Okay I just failed a whole lot until I looked up this video and realized something, all of her attacks are thunder oriented. I just put on two 20% thunder reduction items and it made the fight 100% easier. Hope that helps!

You have to give props though. Urusula's face remained completely animated and moving the entire time. Especially considering how low a budget the first game actually had, that's pretty impressive. Compare this to a scene in Deep Jungle where the faces are static most of the time.

Completely new to this series and have devoted over 20 hours in 2 days already on my holiday from work. Adore the game and cant wait to play the rest of the series but this boss fight as we speak really makes me want to be back at work early!!!
I just picked up the story so far as well for my ps4 and this boss fight took me back to the ps2 days of fighting sephiroth in KH2. Fuck this boss fight dude
MAN!! I just bought this earlier this month, I fought her maybe 50 times, then finally beat her, THEN, I get to wondering how to get a more powerful weapon, so i checked it out, dig this, I HAD NO IDEA I HAD MORE KEYBLADES!! Damn, I ended up beating her with the first one lol!

Edit: i left this comment 5 years ago & in that time i started the game again & this fight was way easier! I think i was underleved at the time! This fight is very rewarding once you get the hang of it. I’ve since beat the first, second & third games & even beat the first 2 more times, once on proud mode! thanks to everyone who commented for your advice & tips & please continue to comment so people who need help can come to this & read them!

This boss isn't hard on ANY version of the game, even on Proud Mode
You have healing, Aero, the lightning being lost when she breathes in you have openings to attack
just let ariel and goofy fight her and wait until her health is down to the last tiny bit then go up and hit her face
skinoff89 in this Boss you gotta take your time you gotta hit and move around and use Aero and make sure you have plenty of either
After reading most of the comments here, I was dreading this fight. Turns out, I beat her on my first try. Have Donald and Ariel in your party, with them both using defensive magic constantly. Also keep casting Aero on yourself. As for Ursula herself, try to swim around the side and wail on the side of her head and neck. That's what worked for me.

The story isnt hard to progress if you pay attention to the dialogue.

The animation of Ursula's face was absolutely amazing, sometimes I wonder how these games didn't destroy the PS2 given how much power they must've required at times
It also helps to sometimes lock off. For example, when she opens her mouth and wants to bite you, lock off and swim away. Or when she shoots light out of her mouth lock off again. This way it's much easier to flee from her. Hope this helps. :)

I did a cool strategy where I swam around her while Ariel and goofy attacked until she was really low.
And it takes about 20 minutes and then you finish her off.

I think Ursula wants you to get ready for this
The best way to do this fight is to play defensively, especially on Proud Mode. Keep away from her until after she fires the laser or tries to suck you in, she leaves herself open for a few seconds after these attacks, so you can get a few hits in then. Second phase is about the same, but she'll do her "This won't be pretty!" ring of lighting attack as soon as she gets the chance whenever you're close to her, so you'll have to get your hits in quickly and get away.
The worst part of this whole fight for me is the random lighting. You're almost guaranteed to get hit by it several times while trying to attack her. Gave me a ton of trouble on my current Proud Mode run. I beat her a few days ago.
The way I did it was get Ariel and Donald to do the damage since all 3 of us can heal and then I keep her distracted
That's how I did it too. Get a few hits in, pull back when she's about to attack, then repeat the process.
Sora's defense is extremely high, I don't remember I had such defense when I fought against giant Ursula, i was forced to use aero to face ursula's attacks, instead I saw you didn't use it, it's impressive

Ursula's been taking some lessons from the Andross school of giant face combat I see.
The first time when I fought this boss on Beginner mode, I died SO MANY times. When I fought this boss later on in life on Proud mode, I was actually able to handle it without dying once 😊

Ursula was not voiced by Rosie O'Donnell. She was Terk in "Tarzan". Ursula's voice is Shreveport, LA veteran Pat Carroll, who is nothing like the character in real life.

When I first played years ago, I remember Usrula as the harest boss I ever faced.
Ha i literally just won by swimming along the outer edge spamming circle and letting goofy and Arielle do the job except for the last hit
Literally the only boss that I hate facing. It's the swimming.
Gotta give Ursula props. She's in such horrible shape that she's completely out of breath every time she does an attack, she keeps trying and failing to eat Sora which probably wears her down because she needs to eat so much, and her being so fat makes her a HUGE target. Yet she's one of the hardest bosses in the whole game. You'd think she wouldn't be fit (no pun intended) for battle but she's actually really good.

I always thought this song had such a co lead in and they only used it for Disney villains (Ursula, Ice/Rock Titans/Malificent Dragon Form..). It’s the equivalent to the 13th Dilemma which has the coolest lead ins in KH2 which is why they brought it back for KH3 (and 13th struggle)

@De'vante Warner theyre terribly designed. In every shape and fashion this world/level is needlessly confusing, lifeless, and boring that it is easily with deep jungle the worst kingdom hearts level in existence. Also the colors are so bland and one note that the vibrant music throws me off sometimes while just exploring. Also pressing circle and square one after eachother(attempting to precisely maneuver) results in an involuntary dolphin kick(throwing yourself across the map). On top of all that i have no idea where tf im going half the time because it all looks the same shade of dead dark blue. Sorry man i truly hated this experience with a passion on proud mode. Have a nice day though regardless.

The perfect send off to an extremely irritating world. Just swimming around aimlessly unable to find where you need to go. The beautiful music that got incredibly annoying, the annoying fights and dolphins that don’t swim where you want them to. Ursula was just the icing on the cake.
Yeah reading through it seems like this was the most worst received level in the game. Personally it’s pretty tied with Alice in Wonderland and Tarzan Alice in wonderland wasn’t as bad only because it was such a short level relatively speaking and Tarzan it just annoyed me because I wasn’t a massive fan of the movie so I just didn’t really keep my interest but definitely just having to re-orient yourself with swimming I feel like even though they taught you how to swim I always press the wrong buttons when I want to go up or when I want to go down it messes up when you were trying to fight it’s definitely a pain on the plus side at least you don’t have to worry about visiting this level in the following games lol
Like others said wait for Aerial and Goofy to get her health down to green while taking chances only after she fires the thunder beam and is exhausted, 3-4 attacs max.
Once she goes berserk, tough it out for a bit and don't forget to use ethers and cast aero and cure.
The last 1/3rd of her health I just ended up going with a full mp guage on Sora and spammed stop in between melee attacks with all three attacking.
Nicely done. I remember spending hours in Atlantica grinding for XP to get MP Rage (Magic restored every time you take damage) just to cast cure over and over again during her lightening attack. I played that battle over and over so many times her speech during that unskippable cutscene is stuck in my head. "I rule the seas, now!"
Equipping two thunder rings really helped me in this fight on proud

From what I've seen from gamechamp and their level one run on critical mode, their strategy was to start damage storage (a glitch that multiplies all damage when you start a three hit combo) then spam magic at a distance
Tip for anyone who fights her when she attacks swim over her head to get to her neck and then attack the back of her head even while she is doing her electric beam attack if your behind her you can hack away as you please

@Mia Felix What I did was I got an accessory that makes me take less electric damage and I loaded Donald and aerial with healing potions.

I recently played Kingdom Hearts for the first time a few months ago and I just beat the Giant Ursula boss for the first time and can't explain how happy I am. For any tips to beat her, you have to go back behind her head to attack, and cast Stop and Cure when you're low.
I died so many times from her that I decided to put out my rage by playing Assassin's Creed 2 and just kept killing guards as Ezio until I had my steam off from this boss fight LOL

I remember thinking they should've made her necklace shell the target point because you end up clipping into her model if you fight normally, but if you range out, her attacks are designed to immediately null your defense, ending up in the pattern and telegraphy being confused, whereas her necklace would've recentered the fight to keep her and you at a proper distance...
Plus, her eyes tracking you gets creepy af

I loved “the Deep End” which was used as the Disney boss theme (with a few exceptions) and the Ansem first fight. But I love the lead-ins to the fights with them saying something as the music starts.
It’s just like The 13th Struggle my other favorite Kingdom Hearts Song. Is has the similar idea in which the organization member summons their weapon while say a quote right before the battle starts.
I don’t know how Square has been so fucking good at finding the best composers in gaming history. Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobue Uematsu, Yoko Shimomura, Masaharu Iwata and Hitoshi Sakamoto are fucking amazing!!

It's funny, when I was little this fight was the easier of the two Ursula battles for me. And now when I play it it's the other way around. Having Ariel and Donald as party members definitely helps because they're both healers.
The real challenge in this fight is my dwindling patience with swimming controls
Step 1- Add Aero and Cure to your shortcuts. Step 2- Add ethers and elixirs to your items.
Step 3- Lock on and Bash like crazy

I sometimes wonder how Disney villains and Sephiroth ended up in the same game.
I played super defensive against her which paid off a lot. I kept healing Ariel and Donald while they whomped on her mostly and only approached when I saw my chance. It was long (Cause I was slightly underleveled at this point) but I managed to beat her first go round. Ursala was low-key my favorite boss too.

So I had the misfortune of not realizing that you cannot change the game’s difficulty until hours later so I am in pain
I just swam over her and got behind her head and started whacking her that way.
Her trying to turn around to face you pushes you out of the way of the thunder blast dealies and none of her other attacks can hurt you.
I actually thought that was how you were supposed to do it, I beat her my first try by doing that

I did HT first and THEN breezed through Atlantica with Thunder Rings and Pumpkin Head. It was on Proud, BTW.
