Thanks for sharing, AC. I’ve never heard of James E. Strates carnival train. It may not be rolling at this time but cool to know about it. Happy railfanning!

The strates carnival train derailed I think right around 2013 in Stockbridge Massachusetts which is in Berkshire county on the housatonic railroad that was one of the reasons why they stopped using their passenger equipment one person had gotten hurt on the in one of the passenger cars at Stockbridge Mass

It's a Buffalo tradition to watch the train come to the Erie County Fair

After more than six decades of the James E Strates Shows at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, New York, the fair dumped them in favor of a new carnival vendor beginning in 2014. I am sure that greatly reduced the annual profitability for Strates Shows since it left them with a huge two week time block of no work while in New York State. Up to that point, their New York schedule was pretty tight with no extra days of non-revenue down time. This lost revenue might have been just enough to pay their railroad expenses even with the rate increases. I guess we will never know.

Isn't interesting that the railroads are killing off revenue, by pricing themselves out of existence! Harvard Business School types, operate on the assumption that all their customers are multimillionaires, and can afford 25 to 30% boosts in costs! Bad management has destroyed more companies and countries, then any invading army! Thank you for the attention, and information! Thank you 😇 😊!

It’s not that simple, it’s just supply and demand. When costs go up for the railroads, they need to raise their costs, to avoid spending all their money and going bankrupt

@@piedmontrf81 Railroads always harp on the cost of the engineer and conductor impacting their bottom line. But if you take the combined salaries, double them to cover medical and other costs the employer must provide, you still come up with a vanishing fraction of the cost of diesel to run the train, not to mention the cost of periodic car and engine maintenance.

In the 1990's I worked next to the railroad tracks where the James E. Strates Shows was being taken from the Erie County Fair to the New York State Fair. The train was stopped on the tracks and I had a chance to talk to a few of the Carnies. It was an interesting conversation.

Hedge fund demands for higher operating ratio are what's driving up freight rates for all shippers. It it doesn't make there profit margin goal they don't want it. But Common carrier law says they have to quote it. The increase in train crew wages is only a very small drop in the bucket. With only 2 guys on a train Vs the wages of all the truck drivers it would take to make this move. Labor cost isn't the issue here.
