    Suffice to say, the best way to survive a knife fight is to not get in one......

    A knife fight by it's very nature is a savage affair, and it takes nothing less than savagery to prevail.

    I very much agree with your philosophy on knife attacks. 99% of the time the attacker isn't going to be a trained "knife fighter", they are going to attack with aggression and unpredictability which even for a martial artist who trains to defend against knives is going to have trouble with. You are going to get cut it's more about mitigating the severity of the cuts. Be safe, be smart and avoid confrontation but always be prepared to to fight.

    If you are unarmed and someone pulls a knife on you? Run. Seriously. Barring that, create distance and pick up anything you can to use as an improvised weapon, a chair, a tree branch, fire extinguisher, ANYTHING to parry the knife. Once I caught a guy rummaging through my car late at night while I was going to do laundry. I instictively yelled at him. I think he saw my gun magazine on the passenger seat. He was more scared of me, even though he was slightly bigger. He had to walk past me to get away and I was thinking if he pulls a knife I'm going to have to use my laundry basket as a shield.

    After training in some realistic attack situations I can without a doubt say that the most dangerous weapon by far is a knife. That rubber marker tipped toy scared the shit out of me and thats because people get insane with a knife and they're so unpredictable. Some of the best ways we had of stopping that knife was moving in and trapping the arm against the body but as you'd expect that didn't come without some cuts. I guess the best thing that was said said to me is if you have to defend yourself against someone like that you have to want to kill them more then they want to kill you cause your not walking out of this alive if your just trying to defend against them.

    Bravo! I think this is one of the most honest lessons I've ever seen. The instructor admits that even nothing he teaches is fully functional, and he also has a clear and demonstrated history of studying what methods work better than others. Not to mention... he advocates more than one method.... both controlling the arm with the blade, and/or striking. There is a time in the attack where each have there place. I've added this video to my favorites for a very well explained philosophical implication - There is extreme danger in feeling you've acquired a skill set that is fully functional.

  • @akrocuba
    @akrocuba 8 ปีที่แล้ว +76

    Great vid. Shows what a real blade attack is. We train with several prison guards and they say the same thing. Knife/blade attacks are just all over the place when it happens. There is no time to pull some kind of fancy technique. I have never been in a real knife fight and never want to be. We train as much as we can in the dojo, but that is NOT even close to the real thing. Working with some guys who have been in blade attacks really helps, but it no substitute for a real attack.
    I, personally, was always taught three basics of blade attacks;
    1. RUN....if you can, you never want to face any type of blade if you can get out of that situation
    2. EQUALIZER.....if you can't run, at least try to get something to try and equalize the blade...a rock, stick, even you shoe maybe...but again if you have time
    3. HAND-TO-HAND.....last ditch effort. You WILL get cut, maimed or killed, but you have to do something at this point.
    Again, this vid demonstrates how a real blade attack happens, at least according to the guards that I train with and have trained with over the years who have been involved, got cut or witnessed it happening.
    Great stuff.
    Much respect

      Exactly my thinking. I did some martial arts myself years ago, but in this situation, I would agree totally with your points. This video is so great because it's showing how it is. Fuck the fancy defence technics. An attacker will go so brutal and fast, you don't have a chance.

    Just hearing him talk about it is scary as hell...
    If I ever was to get mugged by some guy with a knife, fuck it, I'm giving him my wallet, credit card, EVERYTHING! Because even if I have like a walking stick, or a baton, or a knife of my own, I don't know how to properly use it. I mean yeah, a 3 foot cane is gonna have reach on a knife, and if you can get in a good baseball swing to his head, you've got a chance. But I don't always have one with me. Because how practical is it to have one when your cruising the bars trying to hit on chicks, or going to buy a gallon of milk? I need to find something practical that I can get to fast and that even a complete yutz like me can defend with efficiently.

    The one thing I always taught my students in a knife attack is to accept the fact you are going to get cut. After that fear is accepted you move on to survival. Good, blunt and factual video. Very few instructors will be honest with the effectiveness of knife defense.

    You are absolutely right. It's the energy and rage directed at you that can be stultifying! An average person can be taught enough physical moves to survive most things in a year or less. Training a person's brain to not be overwhelmed by the psychology of the attack usually takes years of training someone's brain and few schools really focus on that. Why? Because it's damn difficult and if the instructor isn't mentally capable, he/she cannot teach another to be mentally prepared. You cannot teach what you don't know. You can have someone parrot your moves and become pretty efficient, but you can't teach someone to parrot mental preparedness.

I appreciate the fact that he Doesn't just-show-moves to demonstrate things that you "can" do like the billions of other knife videos on youtube. • @bae313
      @bae313  7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      And here's why. To throw all those cool slashes and stabs takes time and effort. You have to pay for lessons, you have to have the discipline to show up week after week, month after month and to keep practicing. The guy who has the patience and discipline to master knife fighting has already mastered the basic skills to keep a job. Thus he has his own money and decent prospects for a descent future and doesn't have to go out and try to attack and rob people for money. This is what the masters are talking about when they are saying the most important thing the arts teach you involve character...

    I guess I am a minority… to this day I remember it clearly… when a knife was pulled out on me I saw it coming down to my heart, just then my brain flashed back to my Sensei teaching us knife defense. Without any thought my brain froze on the technique that I was taught to defend against such an attack and immediately my body blocked, stopped the knife, took the person down, retrained them to the ground and took the knife away all without a single thought. For me those Dojang teachings saved my life

      @junk3996 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      every person is different too
      i had one guy pull a knife on me once, and i flipped out into a rage and just charged at him. at that point it was HIM, the guy with the knife that was experiencing that fear and glitch effect to where he threw up his arms in defense and i slapped his knife arm backwards and away, and his own self defense caused the knife to come up and clip him just above the eye - this was enough to stop all confrontation, but it wasn't a life or death situation either...it was just a stupid teenage fight

    • @bae313
      @bae313  10 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Dojo techniques can work fine as long as the guy attacks the way you practiced in the dojo.
      That is why in my knife fighting course we have the attacker attack in as many different ways as possible. Right hand, left hand, forward grip, reverse grip and on all twelve angles and many other variations.

      bae313 Both Major Tom and you are both right.
      Practicing the drill to have a fast response, even under stress, is the right method in ANY martial arts or training tecnique. Correction, is the ONLY.
      When you can't think beacuse of speed, stress, fatigue, intoxication.. the times you repeated a drill is vital.
      What kind of reaction is dictated by mindset. If you practice a single tecniques use that. If a defender is used to knife-fight.. stick to it even if she have a just a pen or a key as weapon.
      But if you have time and chance to train in different tecniques your mindset should skip between those.
      I have 4 "mindset" that I try to dive-in if my sense of danger is triggered:
      Closed space unarmed / knife-armed
      Open space unarmed / knife-armed
      Sorry for my bad english.

    After taking martial arts, from someone who had trained in many, and making knife fighting a focus of his training, I can say this guy speaks truth. Your best options are probably to try to control range, kick to shin, then to trap, then to intercept. All of those will fall through if you miss and the attacker is determined, or if your attacker is right next to you before you realise your being attacked.

  • @kara88bg
    @kara88bg 10 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    So what guy just said, if you get into a knife fight without a weapon on you, bro youre fucked up and yes you probably are. What i learned in krav maga training was that it was better to get slashed forearms than a hole in your liver, and that your leg is longer than his hand + blade, so kick him in the balls if possible and run. Effective way to learn how to dodge with your body and forearms is to get your trainer and a couple more guys to throw basketballs at you really hard and really fast, or do a blue jacket 3-4 vs one unprotected reaction training so that bluejacket guys chase you with sticks and knifes and you dodge and punch them as much as you can.

    What would you do with an attack in the penetintary against a shank? I' know one unfortunate FMA practitioner who have actually had to use his skills in rikers island in n.y.c .... As per him he had to modify his skills but he managed to survive. As per him there were very few slashing attacks but mainly the zipper which is poke poke poke poke poke... Of course he didn't come out unscathed but he survived nonetheless so I don't believe it is the style but the willingness for the attacked to come out as a survivor... I myself was attacked by a gang banger with a knife once and it was the scariest thing I had ever encountered and only my foot work which i loathed practicing day in and day out saved me.... I got three slight flesh wounds out of the deal but I lived... And I agree with others..... The best way to survive a blade attack is to never engage a person with a blade unless you have something bigger and even then you should use some serious discretion.... Very informative Video.

    • @bae313
      @bae313  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Again, the best way to defeat a system is to learn the system. If you want to defend against shankers, read the book about, study and practice the Folsom Prison style. In my slasher course, that is exactly what I do with the student in vid 50, 51 and 52.
      If no one had studied Brazilian Jujitsu, Royce Gracie would still be champion of the UFC. It only makes common sense...
      The whole problem with FMA is they take one thing and try to apply it to everything. This makes all the other things they apply it to, less than if the other thing had been specialized in. They want to use cutting techniques with impact weapons, very inefficient and in general, very stupid.

    He's right. I've been in a knife fight before, and it's the most terrifying thing you could ever encounter. my instructor at my dojo trained me in balisong combat, but that training didn't pay off. I lost a finger and I was bleeding out from my left arm. I had to run to survive that attack.

    • @bae313
      @bae313  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most dojo training is based on fantasy. I bought into the b.s. my instructors sold me, and then found myself in a real knife fight too. Fortunately, my footwork kept the guy from being able to reach me, but the guy deferred to my friend who wound up with a punctured and collapsed lung. Doctor said the knife missed his heart by 1/4 inch. I then learned a more realistic system from a Togakure Ryu Ninjitsu student. Later studied a Chinese reverse grip style, not so great. Then studied a Filipino style and Fulsome Prison. Then the more modern, Kelly McCann, Tony Blauer and Michael Echanis stuff. Put it all together with the teachings of Musashi in his "Book of Five Rings" and came up with the best style I have ever seen. My entire Slasher Course is free on my channel. I have faced guys with knives a few times since. Haven't had any problems. By far the most important self defense skill is situational awareness. If the guy is in your comfort zone and you can't see his hands, YOU MUST ASSUME HE IS ARMED AND BE READY TO REACT ON YOUR PREDETERMINED PLAN. Once you have done that, you are ahead and he is behind. He thinks he has the initiative and benefit of surprise, BUT HE IS WRONG. When he is in the drawing motion, you are already in attack mode of your effective response. If a course is not teaching you things like the OODA Loop, Baye's Theorum and the cone of influence and Musashi's concepts, you need to go back to school. It's all in my course.

    Of all the videos on knife fighting I've seen on You Tube, this is the only one that is realistic and would have a higher probability of survival. I studied Aikido for several years and we were taught that the best way to not get stabbed or slashed by a knife is A) Not be anyplace where someone would want to knife you and B) Stay out of arms reach until you can safely retreat.

      +Michael Mackinnon "booty ho" is a "wanna be" who has no clue on the realities of real fights. In my course we talk about things like how a biker's leather jacket, steel chains around the wrists and attached to wallets and wrench in the pocket and heavy boots, leather belts, etc are all defensive and offensive measures.While going over that section with a student one time, he said something to the effect of, "well I guess even a t-shirt could be helpful." I then got a t-shirt and put it on the closed cell Able targets we initially practice the angles on using aluminum training knives (you can see the target in the videos at the beginning of my "Slasher Course" videos).I then popped open my Spyderco Endura and threw 4 quick slashes at the t-shirt covered target and turned and looked at him. His mouth was hanging open looking at the shredded t-shirt revealing that the slashes had gone mostly all the way through the 3 inches of the target. In some places it had gone all the way through to the concrete it was hanging on and I had to re-sharpen the blade of the Endura that night.While you do see replies from guys like booty ho, idiotic comments from guys like him are deleted by me before they actually make the video's page.

    Martial arts give a general knowledge which mostly work on the paper. In reality it comes down to one's personal speed of reaction and how he/she manages not to freeze. In every fight you expect to get hit at least once, even if a light tap, which in a knife fight can be fatal. Finding something usable as a weapon is a best first reaction.
    Said that, I'd rather find myself in a knife attack situation with some martial art training than nothing at all, knowing that avoiding the fight is always my winning option.

  • @kennylopezjeetkunedo5555
    @kennylopezjeetkunedo5555 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm gonna give my take on this. Everything he's saying is true about a real knife attack, but the people who don't know how to prepare for a dynamic attack are the ones that don't have their training partners come at them full force. Actuality is very important and this is why after you LEARN a technique, your suppose to DISSOLVE IT and the only way you can do that is by making it a real situation.(Of course your not gonna actually hurt your training partner but you have to actually have him come at you, like he's trying to hurt you, that's the only way you can dissolve it and you wanna keep doing it until you get it but you also have to train for different scenerios). This is how I was taught and when you know how to execute it in real time without thinking you'll be more than prepared. And than even after you get it, you wanna do it again to it becomes a part of you.

  • @2fast2block

    Great info. And what makes it worse, most people don't realize they were cut until after the fight, and, most don't see the knife to begin with, either from tunnel vision from stress, the knife is hidden in hand, it's pulled out at the last moment before contact or pulled during the fight. Knives are a brutal weapon and people are so ignorant still about them. I don't want to be mean, but they are.

I even went half speed and it was clear to them that they would be cut. I am tired of the this is how you stop this when its not do clear cut. Crappy scenario to be in if it did happen.

    Also if you think a gun is always the best weapon. Try clearing a house. Knives or so easily concealed and affective in close quarters. I have seen the best fail a training mission . I wish that we were trained on this earlier in the military. Yes you will be trained but in the more traditional way. same thing with unharmed combative training. The government does not want everyone to be trained on the real world class A tactics. You really have to get in the top tear groups before they will train you on that

    You don't have to grab his knife hand, but you do have to impede it from delivering the knife to a vital area before or at the same time that you deliver your strike. If you knock him out as the blade severs your carotid or other major artery, you still lose too and end up dead (unless you are fighting very close to a hospital. This is the :"bad tie" people talk about.
    If you want a slower target with less range of motion, look to the elbow joint or upper arm in order to impede the knife hand.

    I've had a knife and razor pulled on me. In my experience best thing you can do is defuse the situation while not giving them the feeling of superiority over you. Basically "I dont wanna fight, I will if you attack me though" also grabbing something around you helps, only if its convenient.

    I think lessons like this need to be encouraged. I think it's great to know how to defend yourself, but it is way too easy to think that because someone has the skills to fight, then you should instead of running away or keeping your distance.

  • @bae313
    @bae313  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem is that natural reaction to block groin kicks. That's devastating when the blocking hand has a knife in it.
    Mobility is key for a trained fighter & a cut to the leg disables it = no mobility.
    If you have a firm hold on the attacker's knife hand, kicking is safer. WHY DO YOU WANT TO HOLD HIS KNIFE HAND? A disarm? Now you're very close to the knife, longer than you need to be.
    Knife 101: Avoid the blade, get it pointing away (his groin will too), disable the attacker &/or escape.

    he didnt say anything about being impossible. i think this is really true. no matter how skill you are when it comes to a street fight. your only going to use like ..60% of what you know into action because everything is alot faster and alot more tension. yeh you'd freak out too if someone pulled a knife on you at that pace. its just like you didnt expect a fight and hes already starting to stab you at full force you wont be blocking at a full force because you werent expecting it.

    • @bae313
      @bae313  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Awareness is key. What is the guy doing? Why is he coming into your personal space? Where are his hands and what are they doing? What pre-attack indicators is he displaying? What responses have you trained in to deal with the answers to these questions? All of this is addressed in my Slasher Course vids.

    • @JackBryanReynard
      @JackBryanReynard 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not 60%. Something more like 10%. Or 5%.

    • @bae313
      @bae313  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jack Reynard The percentage depends on how realistic your training has been before the attack takes place. If you are a dojo warrior, your numbers are on target. If you follow a course of study like the "Slasher Course" on my channel, 60% is likely to be a minimum.
      ALSO, (having seen real knifes coming at me in actual attacks) once you see the knife coming at you, over-reacting and blocking with TOO MUCH force is more likely than blocking with too little force. This is because during a dynamic critical incident, adrenaline and life preservation instincts can be an enemy for a trained fighter. Especially if the trained fighter has not experienced a reality based course of instruction.

      bae313 i'll check out your vids later when I have time. i like the upload here and the comments though. please don't use the word warrior with the word dojo. dojo's don't breed warriors. dojo's breed competition fighters. it is a completely different mindset, manifested in systems built on completely different principles than a real world violent, life or death style attack. in those situations, technique is the least important part of the equation, though it can definitely save you some pain and scars.

    • @Vikingwerk
      @Vikingwerk 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The miserable part about knife fights is, you can survive a LOT of losing in a knife fight. You just have to search news results to find huge numbers of people who end up in the ER with 50 or 60 knife wounds from an attack like that, and survive. The thing is, a frenzied attack like he demonstrates may land a huge number of wounds, but unless they happen to get lucky, there is a lot of space on the human body that can take a flesh wound and come out ok. Will be horribly painful, but survivable. I suppose the most dangerous knife attacker is one who attacks with that level of frenzy, coupled with the training to make the cuts count.

    Knife defense/disarms is an area that non-"combative" martial arts can improve immensely. Trapping learned from Chinese arts like Wing-Chun & "defanging the snake" learned from Filipino arts gives you skill sets that are just not available via any combatives I have seen, old or new.
    The 1st time I faced a knife armed threat, after I began studying arts, was enlightening. I wore him out with the self preservation footwork I learned avoiding my USMC Senseis' attacks, "F" the disarms they taught.

    I can never understand why people are still preaching their dojo-style techniques that never see reality. get yourself a training knife, as it is shown in the vid and check every technique you've seen in training. if it don't work throw the technique away. Unfortunately many teachers of classic martial arts are authorities and people tend to believe them....even if they have never used their own stuff in real defence situations!

    Great video! goes great with everything I've been told about knife defense, that being first try not to be in a situation like this, second is run, third is if you have to fight use whatever you have available even throwing a trash can at the guy and 4th is that if you cant get away and are barehanded then you are going to get cut and/ or stabbed but keep your arms up to try and preferable take it on the outside of the forearms.

    fantastic explanation of the reality of a knife attack, and no, i'm no expert. but i do have students and i teach them that if a blade is involved they will mostly likely never see it, and if they do it's coming in hard as can be over hand with a kitchen knife or screwdriver if they are lucky or its "pop pop pop " prison style to the gut. its a no win scenario but there are ways to increase survival and they involve listening to folks like this who know what it's like. run run run..

    When I reference a WC principle I'm not talking about the WC system. Many WC principles can be adapted to use strengths of other arts. Here I'm only talking about doing 2 things simultaneously rather than wasting time with a 1-2 combo. If I glimpse a blade coming at me (which I have experienced in actual knife attacks to avoid being gutted) & I turn to avoid the knife, I can then block the follow through while kicking at the groin to get his defense low to open up his head to a power strike.

    Defending a knife attack is completely possible, but they certainly AREN'T teaching it correctly @ MMA schools OR 99% of martial art schools.
    The 1ST THING is that you have to understand knife attacks, thus you must have studied a detailed knife fighting system AND become very good at it.
    Like, driving a car is 1 thing, winning a professional car race is quite another. You have to become very skilled 1st.
    The "Slasher Course" on my channel is an example of a detailed knife fighting system.

    Crucial information. Who is the instructor? This video alone is motivation to conceal a knife. I would hope that if I was to be able to deploy my knife as they had theirs out, they would be less likely to bum rush, because they too would get stabbed. Then it might go to more of a sparring engagement, which would atleast give me a chance at survival. Without a knife, as this video demonstrates, most likely to get stabbed if not killed if cannot escape.
