That's bullshit because everybody, even that couple, would assume it would have been a replica. The street seller saying it is original would be something every street seller would say. They bought it because they liked it and when it turned out to be real they sold it and kept replicas. which is basicly what they expected to have bought in the first place (and is just as good as the real thing, even according to banksy.)
If they didn't like it in the first place, why even keep replica's.

    • @heloxiii8894

@@cryptonote1147 I'm not convinced about their motives, but they did a reasonable choice due to the high risk of keeping them (the other one was to lend it to a museum for a few years). It's a funny quality of human opinion that I would 100% disagree with you. A mind as visionary as Banksy might certainly have hoped that they would do exactly as they have. Her lack of poisonous cynicism in in an ugly world full of it has afforded her and her husband a better life than they would have had. It's very likely that he would have desired that for the right people. You should remember that Banksy has demonstrated time and time again that he doesn't believe that the inherent value is "in" his art but rather in the human experience.

They did what banksy also wanted when he posted this quote up. “Art should make us feel more clearly and more intelligently. It should give us coherent sensations that we otherwise would not have had. But the price of a work of art is now part of its function, its new job is to sit on the wall and get more expensive. Instead of being the common property of human kind the way a book is, art becomes the particular property of somebody who can afford it. Suppose that every worthwhile book in the world cost $1 million - imagine what a catastrophic effect on culture that would have.” - Robert Hughes

If you can afford to turn down 200 grand then good for you. I understand that art is MEANT to be enjoyed as art and not just an object to be sold, but it is for the most part just an object. You know what I don't like about this, it's always about value. Nobody reports on art because it took effort or because it is good or because it's a particularly clever piece. Let the news dumb it down until people think it's just empty bullshit that gets sold for unbelievable amounts of money. This whole money laundering thing has really hurt the representation of art in the 20th and 21st century.

I live outside nyc and I remember banksy painting stuff around the city. I heard about these paintings being sold for thirty or sixty bucks on the street. I could kick myself for not going with my gut and traveling down and buying one. There were much more than those two in fact being sold.

I think yes...it proved Banksy's point but unlike other people that just buy art pieces to collect or to say I sold the pieces for the hell of it. They recognized the opportunity to bring themselves a peace of mind. I don't think they regret selling the pieces. They loved the pieces but they loved their relationship more. Which is worth more? Art to hang in your house or your relationship? They chose the peace it would bring to buy a new home for themselves. In that case Banksy might be happy...because of his work, a couple don't need to worry about saving up for a house anymore. Of course I don't speak for Banksy but if my art brought a person happiness that would mean the world.

I’m not a musician of any sort, but I am a visual artist and what I can say is that this kind of thing is happening in the art world too. “Modern art” is a literal disgrace to true art. Standards don’t exist anymore. “Anything and everything is art.” This does an extreme disservice to those who actually have artistic talent as it puts everyone at the same level. “No art is better or worse than the other.” This is simply not true, yet if you say this, you are denounced as narrow minded and intolerant. It’s so disappointing. We absolutely do need another renaissance.

A lot of people judging someone for selling valuable art for money. Keep in mind, not everyone can afford to keep 200k+ dollars art in their house.
    1. Thief and Safety reason since everyone knows her face after the encounter.
    2. Especially if you are poor or middle class, 200k can help your entire family.
I am an artist, but I'm also poor, as much as I like to create art and appreciate art, I also want a better life for my family and myself first.
    3. The things that she bought are house, car, and clothing, those are basic human needs, not unnecessary things.

    • @mysigt_
      @mysigt_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Even if the things she bought weren't "necessary", I don't understand how that would somehow be greedy. Why does she have any moral obligation to keep the paintings? After she bought them fair and square, they were hers to do with as she wished.
Merriam-Webster defines greed as "selfish and excessive desire for more of something (such as money) than is needed". But aren't we all greedy then? Mere subsistence is certainly far cheaper than most of our lifestyles, yet none of us consider it greedy, in the negative sense, to want internet, music streaming, air conditioning, etc. Why should she be condemned for preferring her dream home to two worthless pieces of fabric, especially since she has exact replicas in her home anyway? Comment-section art connoisseurs speak damningly of "materialism", yet they cling on to a specific painting because it's "original", despite the fact that this woman can enjoy the replicas just the same. If anything, this story shows that without his name on everything, Banksy is just like any other schmuck with stencils.
I'm sorry for ranting. I'm just tired of people attacking a woman's moral integrity for a completely harmless act that only brought tangible wellbeing to herself and her family. Most of these people are just pretending they wouldn't do the same thing, anyway. They were too preoccupied with being woke to remember to not be hateful assholes.

I don't think any of us can honestly say that we would either keep the work, donate them, or return them knowing they were original Banksys...I think ultimately, our own rationalization would lead us to selling them at a massive profit, so we could use the money for other things.
With that being said: I would like to think that if I, lets say, bought 4 paintings to hang in my apartment, had them for days all hung up, then learned about them being original Banksys. I'd personally make a spectacle about it, then burn the pieces and post it online. I guess it would be in the spirit of what Banksy claims art is for, and as someone who admires what he is doing, I think that would speak more to him (or he wouldn't care at all).
It would be interesting if I were to request a full original-priced refund and return them to him (or his art organization), and leave it at that.
What do y'all think? What would be the most "appropriate" action to take with the pieces, and why?

It could be that Art that recognisable is often forged and copied so I don’t blame people for thinking it wasn’t really Banksy’s work and to just keep walking I’ve seen lots of imitations of his stuff before its value doesn’t depend on art gallery its value depends upon being able to prove that it’s really a Banksy. It gained its value when Banksy confirmed they where his pieces.
Hope this makes sense I’m dyslexic.
