    My quicker results are due I did a pre-germinating treatment for charapita seeds. Some Mexico universities did test, and published them in pdf, for Rocoto Seeds, and I used similar for charapita seeds. The key is to put seeds into a solution of hydrogen Peroxide at 5% during 60 minutes, and after adding tapped water to get a solution at 1% hydrogen peroxide for 24 hours. To ensure the germination, I kept seeds in paper roll covered with tin foil for days, checking the sprout of root after 11 days. After I put seeds into germinating soil. Temperature between 70 and 80 F. And 4 days later Stem emerged with 2 tiny cotiledone leaves. The extra advantage using peroxide hydrogen treatment is the seed will grow a taller plant with thicker stem.

    Thanks Pepe....This answers a few questions. I had a plant last year, but it did nothing so I blew it off. Then this spring my friend once again asked If I wanted one....I got two and potted them up in small pots(maybe 1/2 gallon) . I just looked and one has some buds forming . It is good to know they grow so slow. I have 40 other peppers potted, I'm not new to this pepper growing. I have 2 other Aji's----Aji Crystal and Aji Limon. I sort of have an obsession with Baccatums. It began when a Peace Corp worker in Cameroon sent me some seeds from what locals call Piment, but not sweet like you might think...Different type of flowers with the little markings (I can only suppose the Charapitas will also have these)so I asked on a forum. That is when I learned they were Baccatums. Yes a Baccatum in equatorial Africa. Many thought they were Scotch Bonnets, but they are not. I don't think Scotch Bonnets have the marking on their flowers, but the fruit looks just like Scotch Bonnets and similar in heat and taste. Unfortunately last year I had a seeding failure and lost all my viable seeds. I don't suppose you have any of those seeds for sale? I live Katty Corner from you in the Pacific Northwest in the San Juan Islands, Washington, so I don't have your heat....60 for lows, low 70's for typical highs in August. OK, too much coffee, thanks for the video and I did subscribe.
    Peace n Love, ---Texas Bob

    Had our seeds imported from Spain. Germinated in a week, inside under lights and with a heat mat set to 80 F. They were the smallest of the pepper plants at transplant time but are already producing a month and a half from transplant, 180 days from seed starting.

      Thanks. I also bought it in Spain at www.mikelsimon.com
      At 5:48 in video Pepe says patience it can take 30 to 45 days to germinate.
      But, I used a pregerminative treatment to seed and started to germinate after 11 days. The treatment is using Peroxide hydrogen at 5% during 60 minutes and after at 1% for 24 hours. To ensure the germination, I kept seeds in kitchen paper for days checking the sprout of root at 11 days before put seeds into ground. Temperature Between 70 - 80 F. So next time I will try to maintain 80 F. I read some pdf from Mexico Universities for Rocoto seeds they tested improvement using peroxide hydrogen at 15% for 15 minute, as pregerminative treatment. The extra advantage are taller plants with thicker Stem. Best regards.

    I’m in NTX 8A and started my seeds from Rare Seeds indoors with heatmat on Jan. 1, 2020. Germination was 21 days and transplanted out at end of March. I started getting peppers in mid-June. Like the tip about the heat and full sun. Started using shade cloth last summer for other peppers and now is a go to method for several if not all of my varieties.

    • @mcraw4d
      @mcraw4d 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kramerb3758 yes, referring to North Texas. If you’re growing in a pot I would go with something that is about 2ft wide minimum. They seem to grow to match pot size. In ground the plant was about 30” x 30” bush where as a 7 gallon planter about 1/2 the size. Also, in a container you need to be able to monitor water closely. I had one in a container at a community garden and it would wilt despite daily watering during Jul-Aug which decreased production compared to the in ground one. Other than that it was pretty low maintenance.

    I was able to get from seed to about 7" in 3 months. I used a full spectrum grow light on a 16hr on 8hr off schedule. The plants are pushing out buds but I'm pulling them for now so it doesn't stunt its growth. I'm hoping I'll start to get some harvest in late July or early August at their current rate of growth. I'm excited, they're gorgeous plants. I live in Northern IL so I'll have to bring them in for the winter and put them in a dormant cycle, but next year should be a great harvest!
    If the day is going to be above 84f (which is a lot of the summer here) I tend to put my plants under a 40% shade tarp. That way they can still get the longest amount of sunlight possible, but they don't burn. They aren't exactly affordable, but I'd definitely suggest one.

    I managed to sprout a plant in all 3 pots this year (2 seeds per pot), but just like last year I have one tiny (like 1/2" max tall) plant after about 5 weeks and 2 that have never gone beyond their single set of leaves and look like they're almost dead. Most of my other pepper seedlings are around 3-4" tall. Do the seedlings require heat beyond germination? My basement where they're growing under lights is probably around 68 degrees.

      Actually pretty easy. Take a 5 inch cutting and remove all but 4 leaves. Cut those leaves in half. Use a rooting hormone if you like. Dip the cutting cut end into a tiny bit of the rooting powder. Place multiple cuttings into a six inch plastic pot filled with 50/50 mix perlite and vermiculite. Water once and then place them in bright filtered light. Sun can not be direct or intense. Cover them with plastic cover. Check the humidity and mist as needed. They should be ready in three or four weeks. When rooted separate and replant with potting soil. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  ปีที่แล้ว

      Plants require 3 macronutrients N,P and K. The micronutrients are supplied a few times a year by either foliar spraying or they can be incorporated a few times a year into the soil. Some micronutrients include Iron, Boron, Magnesium, Zinc etc. Several brands are available. I find that if used at least three to six times a year depending on the plant they keep the plants healthy and green. Deficiency are usually seen in the leaves. Symptoms vary from color patterns to deformity. This is a lengthy subject. I may make a more detailed video on that soon. Thanks.

  • @Omoloya1
    @Omoloya1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heyyyyy, Mr. Pepe! Good video and thank you for the inspiration as always!
    I am growing Aji Charapita, among other peppers, on "Finca Balcony" here in New Jersey. Despite the space limitations, so far, everybody's GREEN as you know what. My concern does not lie in yellowing from lack of nutrients, or temperature drop (climate change works in my favor again), but in pest control! Should whiteflies or other nasties appear, how do I control them without affecting the bees and other pollinators? I stopped using my neem spray solution once the blossoms showed up for this reason. I am also very "financially careful," so $80 a pint ain gon git it!
    Last two questions: do peppers respond well to removing the lower leaves (giving more aeration to the "trunks") the way that tomato plants do? and, do hot peppers need different cultivation than sweet ones?
    This is the first year I've grown hot peppers and one is blooming like nuts (whoohoo! Finalmente! Jeez-o-pete, I was worried!)...
    She may be a Charapita (the leaves are larger than yours, but I have an eastern exposure in NJ, plus she is sharing a pot with a ?Virginia Sweet?, so that may necessitate larger leaves, right?), but I don't remember due to early summer's building management "plant murder." Maaaaan, I was so angry re-seeding those pots, I don't remember what is what. Same with these enormous tomato plants - I'm guessing which are Zapotec Pinks, Giant Belgian Pinks, the aforementioned Virginia Sweets, and Gelbe von Thuns... and maybe something else. However, there is no mistaking the musk okra and Burgundy okra!
    Yes, I'm bragging HERE. My neighbors only understand when I start passing out vegetables, smh.

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Omoloya, great to hear from you. Yes the peppers can have the lower leaves removed. Also they can be planted in the pots deeper just like tomatoes. Whitefly is not easy to control. Maybe see if Azamax is an option. Keep on growing and keep on learning. The Ficus religiosa is growing really big. Now in a bonsai pot. :-)

    • @Omoloya1
      @Omoloya1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Pepesplants Howdy! Please forgive this delayed response! I am *elated* that that F. religiosa sport is growing happily, too (life is taking me for quite a ride right now, and I am here for ALLL of it)! More pertinent though, to plant exchange and growth: the cacao tree is LOVING the microclimate of the packed (as hell) balcony. However, I will discuss last night's temperature drop concerns ELSEWHERE, ;-).
      The largest pepper plant is NOT a charapita. In fact, I'm not sure what it is. I don't remember planting chili-form peppers, but who the heck cares! As long as they are organic and flavorful, I'm here for that, too!

      @@ingrid26 Spring and summer or all season if it is warm. I ease up on fertilizer in the winter if it gets too cold. Indoor growing or warm climates you can feed continuously.

    Do you have any recommendations for specific fertilizers that you have found that the Aji Charapita takes too? I have 2 that are 1 year old and 1.5 years old that have been struggling.

      Use half strength based on label recommendations every two weeks. When they are more mature use the recommended amount. Fertilize Spring and summer not when weather is cold. Happy Growing.

      @@adamobregon552 I grow many seeds of Rocoto and Aji Limo, but in Spain.
      Best you can do is order seeds on line. Or better if you can buy fresh rocoto and Aji limo in USA. The seeds grow faster from fresh fruit.

    How true is the news that this Aji Charapita worth $25,000 per kilo?

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. A friend of mine sells them at one dollar a pepper (30 pepper min order) and includes shipping. So if a kilo has 25,000 peppers that would be true right? I guess next time I have 25,000 peppers I will count them. LOL
