Cuvier's Dwarf Caiman, The Best Pet Crocodilian?

  • Alligators, crocodiles, caiman and gharials (crocodilians) are probably the coolest animals on the planet today. They might even be as cool as dinosaurs. The Cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus) is the smallest, so perhaps it is the best pet crocodilian? We travel to New England Reptile Distributors ( / nerdreptilesinc ) to answer the question, is the Cuvier's dwarf caiman the best pet crocodilian?

Thought id put this reply here since its at the top. I think the reason the adult reacted at @2:08 is because Clint moved his hand, lightly rubbing the soft flesh inside her hind legs, which is a well known trigger zone in other Crocodilians. That very slight movement triggered the animals fight or flight instinct, and in a crocodilian, even the "flight" reaction is just a touch on the aggressive looking side.

Some of yall suck at socializing small dogs and it shows.
(Anyways the reason most 'toy' dogs have such poor behavior is because they are not treated like dogs, their boundaries are constantly pushed to the point of them snarling and biting for 'funny videos', theyre toted around all the time in a small bag, people dont really seriously play with them, most owners rarely teach them anything beyond potty training, and owners dont bother to socialize them. Now imagine doing this to a pitbull. That's gonna be a dog that gets euthanized.

from my interactions with crocs while working for a zoo and from what my friends and colleges have said , the best way to deal with a crocodillian is to train it kinda like a dog and not like a lizard. the more you interact it and teach it how to interact via treats and training the better they become .

I had a caiman alligator when I was 18. It was the first pet i bought when i got an apartment. Back then in the state of Maryland they were legal. I think i paid $50 for him when he was a hatchling. Cute little bastard for a little while until i had to start feeding him man size meals and grew pretty fast. He always hissed at everyone but was pretty lovable to me and my girlfriend (now wife). That boy would sleep on the couch with me. Was almost like having a dog😂. Very big responsibility and you are right, they dont make great pets unless you know what to expect and have the time to put in with the reptile and the room to keep them.

There was no vet around that would see any of my scaled kids so I was on my own for their care. Even library books were inadequate for many non-mammals. Still, I loved them & gave them the best care I knew of. Folks were amazed how social my pets were. I handled them as much as possible & still have the bite scars from some of the grouches. Had the internet been available then, with all this information, it would have made life so much easier for me & my scaled kids.

I went to Florida recently and got to hold a 2 year old American alligator. At that moment I was absolutely filled with live and amazement for that animal like almost nothing I can remember. When I got to the hotel I started researching crocodilians and which one would be the most practical one to have as my "someday if I'm rich" animal, and I landed on this very creature due to its size and behavior. I've since decided I'll go for more reasonable animals, with a BCI boa as my someday but totally attainable dream pet. But these things are wonderful animals, just not the right pet for me. Clint and team, you all have done wonderful work and helped me hone my childish joy and excitement about a very unreasonable dream animal (a crocodilian) into a real action plan that will hopefully allow me and my kids to enjoy great pet reptiles for decades to come. Love you guys, and thank you.

@@cs4870highly recommend a monitor as well. Asian water monitors in my experience are so sweet and easy to bond with. I’ve noticed monitors and tortoises are super personable if you socialize and spend time with them enough. I’ve had a monitor lay on my chest tongue-flicking my face, and a sulcata tortoise follow me around the house while I was doing chores. Amazing animals, but harder to manage than something smaller so keep that in mind lmao. They get biiiiig. But they’re not dangerous in the way crocs are.

Love watching Clint and Kevin. Thank you for educating everyone, myself included. I get impulsive on wanting certain animals but I always do lots of research, like months and months worth and talk myself out of getting that particular animal at the time. I would absolutely love love LOVE to have a larger monitor species but I know that I do not have the means to give that kind of animal the space and habitat it deserves and NEEDS. Doesnt matter how bad I want one, I just can't. Maybe one day though. Clint did introduce my via TH-cam to the Ackie Monitor which I'm in the process of doing months and months of research on lol anyway, thank you both/all so much.
