FALLON ruined so many sketches. His higher profile (than Horatio Sans) meant he ruined higher profile sketches. I remember great sketches falling apart as they became all about whether Fallon would laugh, as he constantly showed pre-hysteric tremors. I'll grant that Fallon knocked it out of the park at times, but his constant "breaking the wall" by laughing was definitely an indicator he was NOT ready for prime time. He repeatedly broke the cardinal sin, setting him apart in SNL history as possibly the most notorious of the whole bunch. He also get worse at maintaining character over time, perhaps realizing it brought him attention? Vomitus!
By comparison, an example of a true professional from that era was Will Ferrell. Love him or hate him, he fought through such hilarious moments - crowd roaring with laughter, himself obviously struggling - but he always held onto a dead-pan face long enough to re-focus - using mental discipline (ahem, Falon take note), resulting in some of the funniest SNL sketches I have ever seen. But if he had broken down, BOOM - whole sketch would have been doomed to the "forgetful" category.

There's something funny about a comedian like Ferrell, who you can tell wants to break down, but battles on, to their credit, through a particularly funny sketch. But Fallon just ruins these sketches entirely with his mugging to the extent that they can't be recovered.

@@DiscoSamurai Yeah, the fact that Chris Farley idolized him upsets me, knowing that it played a big part in Farley’s early death. Chris was far more talented than John ever was, and much kinder to women.

He was funny in animal house. You’ve got different taste in humor. Doesn’t mean he’s bad.

@@landonhudson9726 Yeah, I pretty clearly phrased everything in my comment as being my opinion. I even opened my comment by stating that Belushi is considered one of the all time greatest SNL cast members. I’ve only seen the “zit” joke from Animal House, and I didn’t think it was funny. I’ve always heard that Animal House is a comedy classic. I’ll probably check it out sometime, not for Belushi, but for its general reputation.

Horacio Sanz had his moments and was a decent cast member. Otherwise, good list.

How the hell did Victoria Jackson stay on the show for so long?

She was pretty amusing, in general.

Because she was alot better than this list gives her credit for, she was decent but not great. Stooge from One SNL A Day has a pretty good appraisal of her strengths and weaknesses as a cast member.

Jim Breuer shouldn't be on this list, he was very funny on SNL.

I agree with all except for Horatio Sans and Victoria Jackson. They added a lot to their seasons where the others took away from the casts.

    Horatio Sanz? Come on now.

Horatio Sanz was actually a good and dependable cast member. He suffers due to Fallon's horseshit and if you noticed when Sanz is in sketches without Fallon, he delivers.

Victoria Jackson is one of the main reasons why I started watching Saturday Night Live in the first place (once I was old enough to stay up so late).

I definitely don't agree with some of these being the top 20. There are 164 cast members to work with--they could have just taken the top 20 least memorable, shortest tenure, truly worst. But that may have been a boring or duly unfair video (Paul Brittain, Luke Null, Pamela Stephenson, Dan Vitale, etc.). I never thought I'd defend Victoria Jackson, but she was a pretty good cast member! If she was that bad they would have canned her, but she was on for years. Even after she was off the show, her line on the SNL 25 special was pitch perfect (standing up in the audience during the 'audience questions' bit and asking "hey, it's nice to see everyone and all, but I have a question--What ever happened to me?").

Most of these cast members are hilarious and brilliant but unfortunately or fortunately achieved their greatest success after Saturday Night Live
