  • Check out this huge school of asian carp that KDFWR shocked up while electrofishing below Barkley Dam. Seeing this many carp together is actually a very common occurrence. This was shot during a media day to highlight the BAFF system that is currently being installed in the Barkley lock.

People snag them in their mouths due to the size of the mouth. Simply put they are not biologically designed to eat bread, corn, minnows or worms. They eat phytoplankton, and don't even have a true stomach meaning they can't digest anything else. This is why they are so hard to control.

I suppose a bit like Japanese Knotweed in the UK. I remember as a kid making tunnels through the stuff. We had amazing fun. However the stuff really did thrive in local woodlands and didn't give much of a chance for anything else to grow. It occupied large areas with a canopy about 6 foot high so nothing else was getting sunlight other than trees that breached it. It used to spread its seed fast and take over large areas quickly. An area of knotweed would almost double next year round.
I actually miss seeing the stuff as its since been completely eradicated from the area for around 10 years.
Anyway I don't like any kind of meddling with nature so i stay out of it. But I do understand the repercussions it has on local wildlife and fauna. I let the experts deal with it.

I've heard that Asia has a **massive** appetite for these fish so if they can ship them over there, this is a whole pile of money right here!
These people are doing a GREAT job, even if the fish just end up being used as fertiliser! That's useful too!

There are a few companies that work with local fishermen to buy these carp from them. Then the fish are cleaned, flash frozen, and shipped over to China. The Chinese prefer these carp because a lot of what they get to eat are "farm raised" and they much prefer these "wild caught" carp.

I agree. They could be canned like mackerel, tuna, or salmon which also have lots of bones. People around the world eat all kinds of carp, some pay well for it. Could be exported to countries that love them, or given away like canned meat was for commodities. Create jobs too.

It would likely just turn out like the rats in London. If people are making money, they aren’t going to wipe out their source of income, they’ll just breed more carp. What we ought to do is promote catching and eating them.

People don't understand, this is the easiest most humane way to single out the bad fish without harming the good ones, it only Stuns them for about 5 minutes, then they return unharmed. A net would damage and kill the keeper fish, and having a thousand fishermen out there for hook and line catch just causes distress, fights, e.t.c. HOWEVER..... What we didn't see was what they're doing with the carp after they catch them. There's many good recipes online for them and they're quite tasty. There must be a food bank somewhere that can help distribute them to hungry families, or a processor that will can the meat.

@@lloydchristmas1086 The ones that go in the boat "carp" aren't going back in the water. They are invasive and will be killed. The noninvasive fish that are stunned are still in the water and will survive.
