Taking My Lawn Down to 1/2"

- Today I'll be cutting my grass the shortest I have in my entire life. I'm taking a play out of @lawnrebel's playbook and breaking the lawn rules. I'm going to be cutting my Kentucky Bluegrass lawn with a reel mower down to 0.5 inches. I'll also show you the cheapest way to change your height of cut on your reel mower. You do not need an Accu-Gage, only a bolt and a 2x4!

Yes, I know I spelled Connor's name wrong in the video. I was too lazy to re-export it and re-upload. Sorry Lawn Rebel!

Looks great! Good think you didn't get all the poa annua that Connor did! That would be the real pisser offer. 😁
Losing color pshhhhh! Brah that’s looks good yo! And nice lawn hack with the board and screw! 😊🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🤙🏾
Sweet Jesse looks awesome. I was yelling at the screen… Don’t do it Don’t do it! Lol
Lol it's just grass right? 🤷♂️🤣
@@LAWNLIFE um right
Reno looks MINT.
I really snoozed not used those seeding blankets during my reno 😂
They did their thing 🤷♂️😂 thanks for watching brother!
Congrats man. Thats a lot of hard work to get to that stage. Gonna be an absolute scorcher the next two weeks in the cities. Twin City Seed Company represent!
Thanks Sean! I appreciate it! A full renovation is no joke. Definitely a ton of work. Thanks for watching man!
Fantastic job, can’t wait to see it darken up at that height. Enjoy daily mowing 😁
Hoping I can replicate this on my lawn by next spring.
Take me down to the half inch city
Where the grass is short
And the scalps aren't pretty
Love it 🤣🤣
Had my Bermuda at a 1/2” for a putting green for a few years. Worked out pretty well, even using a manual reel mower. Overseeded with annual rye in the winter and it did even better.
I’m proud of your efforts and outcome.
Nice! Last year I did 1/2” for about 2wks. I brought it back up to my regular mowing height of 5/8” and it’s been there ever since. Just not leveled enough to go lower so 5/8” is a good place to be.
Yeah I think I'm going to have to bring it back up with the heat coming. Sounded like a good idea to keep it at 0.5 2 weeks ago 😂.
Your lawn looks great!
I think the color still looks there, checkerboard pattern looks sweet.
Did you measure the height of the grass after mowing? Generally the actual height of cut with a reel is going to be lower than the nominal height of cut.
Dude! I could have swore you were gonna lose a lot more color than that. Looks great Jesse. 👍🏼
Thanks man! It definitely lost a lot, looked better once the sun went behind the clouds lol. We'll see how the iron does with it cut low after we get past this heat. Thanks for watching!
What advice do you have for a first time reel more user
Curious to see how this holds up the heat this summer. Looks great from an fellow Minnesotan
I think I'm gonna have to bring it back up a little bit with these heat coming. Sounded like a better idea 2 weeks ago when this heat wasn't coming yet lol. Thanks for watching!
Looks fantastic
Thank you! Thanks for watching man!
you will see where you are level, I know you leveled a a time or two. I have my putting green .5. need the greens mower for that.
My lawn is starting to green up from last year's hot crazy mn summer with no rain it really made my lawn thin any pointers on how to thicking it up
Looks great.
Thanks for always watching man! Hope you're lawn is doing good this year bro!
The lawn looks great cut at that height. The heat is coming through so I'm moving in the opposite direction.
Thanks man. Yeah, I'll probably bring it back up with the weather we have coming. This was filmed about a week and a half ago when the temps were still decent!
Big Jes, welcome to the low lawn life. Now you will have to mow at least 3 times our of 7 days. Sometimes 4 out of 7 days. Are you ready for that action Big Guy??
The real question are the wife and kids ready??? 😂 I'm usually out mowing 2/3 times a week as it is. PGR sometimes helps me out
Nice...now that you got that out of the way you can really bring it down in the fall!
I might get crazy this fall haha
Lemme guess.... You're a fan of Connor ward? Lol.... Your lawn is looking great. Anxious to see follow-up video after you cut it low a few times.
Hated them whirlybirds. But one thing I hated more: cottonwood. Glad I moved! None in Oklahoma!
😂😂 I'm with ya!
@@LAWNLIFE it turned out better than I thought at ½inch. Them reel mowers are fancy!
@@lifeintornadoalley me too. Looked a lot better in person to be honest. Just wish the color would stick around!
Maple “helicopters” suck but I’d take them over effing acorns any day!😆
Welcome to The Point Five Club.
Does it matter what mower u use to do this?
What kind of grass do you have?
Jesse, your lawn looks great! Does KBG thicken up with cutting it short?
I've asked a few TH-camrs already about what they spend on fert, chems, and other maintenance items per year per 1000 sq/ft. I've got a decent lawn and spend about $12-$15 per year, per 1000, not counting 1 time costs like seed, renovations, sprayers, mowers, etc..Wondering what it takes to get to that next level. Small additions are pretty costly to me since I maintain about 30,000 sq/ft
The link to the website isn’t working.
Your grass looks great. Will you allow it to grow out before winter?
Depends by what you mean by grow out. Lol. The longest I usually cut at is 7/8ths
@@LAWNLIFE I have noticed that grass cut short looks best. This year I'm cutting my St Augustine at 1 3/4".
@@rong648 I've noticed the same thing. Are you rotary mowing? If you try reel mowing, you'll never go back. I promise.
@@LAWNLIFE I'm using a rotary mower, I would have to level my yard to use a reel mower.
3/4” looks nicer height and colour that’s my personal opinion, but you still done a good job mowing on a 1/2
Thanks. My sweet spot is 5/8 but I still feel like I lose too much color. I wish 3/4 looked better. I get too many stragglers and the blades fold over more. Thanks for watching!
So is PGR the secret to getting the turf so tight?
I cut at 1.75”, 100% KBG from sod, it’s been 1.5yrs and it still seem to only grow up and not fill in as much as I expected.
Not necessarily. I've noticed very frequent cuttings help more than anything. How often do you mow? PGR definitely would help though. It's supposed to help it tiller. But mine came in super thick by cutting it low over and over without pgr
I rotary mow at the lowest setting every 3-4 days. Never more than 1/3. 1lb of N granular every 6 weeks. Spray iron and humic regularly. Irrigated.
Soil test showed ph 8, K low, everything else within range.
The KBG still isn’t spreading.
@@homer009x where are you located? Sounds like it actually might need more N than you're giving it. Does it look healthy? You're gonna want to get your pH down also.
@@LAWNLIFE I’m in Canada, so short season but the summer isn’t as hot.
It looked very healthy this spring, solid dark green. But then seed heads came and that sucked the colour out, have a bunch of yellow dry stalks. Same thing last year. The yellow just persists.
Not sure what to try: cytokinins, PGR or switching to spoon feeding N (I still have a lot of granular to go through)
@@homer009x if you have cool temps sticking around for awhile I would hit it with a lb of N per k and see how it reacts. Obviously it won't help the yellow stalks but stay on top of mowing and see if that helps with the tillering. Mow every 2 to 3 days. Definitely wait for the fall if temps are in the high 80's and 90s though
You have an awesome lawn but why such leaf tear/blade fray in the thumbnail?
Good stuff…my son watched this and wants me to go lower!
Why not? It'll grow back if you don't like it or it scalps! Let me know how it goes!
The Maple tree in my neighbors backyard is a pain in the a$$ - I manual reel mow my back lawn and it always takes twice as long when them damn things are dropping
Nice video man..
Thanks man. Yeah reel mowers are terrible at getting them up. I remember being pissed about them the last couple of years with reel mowing.
I took mine down to 1/16th
A short cut is great if you like the Triv-like light color to your lawn. I don't see the obsession with everyone cutting this low.
Be careful the first time I used PGR and iron at the same time the grass looked terrible.
First Aussie 😁
Connor who?
I'll trade your maple leaf seeds for my worthless and disgusting pine nettles and cones!
If you have modern cultivars… otherwise might not look so good that low
I was cutting my old sod mix at 5/8ths before this and it looked pretty good. But yes I have elite cultivars now that can definitely handle the low cut. Thanks for watching!
Your neighbors hate you lol
You're probably right 😂
@@LAWNLIFE mine hate me lol
I don't know man... Looks like 17/32" to me. I'd take it down a hair
Lmao.. Thanks for watching Phil! 🤣
Haha.
