I have positioned my Wing on its side and changed the tire in 10 minutes, start to finish. Very easy. Further I used a 195/60/16 (Hankook) tire instead of the 195/55/16. The extra height corrected my speedo using slightly less RPM. No fitting issues Finally, I used Dyna Beads for balancing with great results. Darksiding Rocks!!!
I just bought 12 ounces of Dyna beads. How many ounces did you use On the rear? How many would you put in the front? Do you recommend the hankook?Thx
@@opichocal IF you are using the OEM sized motorcycle tire use 2 oz. If you use a car tire (like me) use 3 oz. I did not use anything but the beads on the rear tire and had no balance issues...however it would not hurt to have it balanced and then insert the beads. The conventional balancing normally changes a bit with time while the beads balance the tire every time you get to 30mph or more. I am a believer.
I love the Bridgstone run flat on the rear, on my second one on my Gold Wing. One tip I've learned is letting air out of the tire before unbolting makes it easier to get the tire/wheel out.

Delgado Lopez it helps some but it still a little tight, just a little tip for though
Try removing the muffler. Lot easier to remove the tire. If you prop up the front of the engine, you don't need a jack.
I run the Same exact set up! Love it! The contact patch is Huge, great traction in wet and loose gravel. Tar Snakes don't seem to affect it as well. Plus I ride 2 up most of the time Runflat = Piece of mind!
DAVE JOHNSON any difference in cornering? I won't be buying anything as big as a touring bike, but I love the Goldwings I've ridden, so a Valerie or undressed wing is a possibility. I'll probably be buying something more along the lines of a Yamaha Bolt to deign with though.

You can release the air from the tire to make the tire easy to come out of the tire well.

I have never heard of this until today so some searching brought me here. The only suggestion I have is maybe lower your air pressure a bit to get even more life out of your tire. The middle of the tread gets thinner then the outer because your pressure is a bit to high. if it was lower you get more even wear across the tread surface. I can't wait to do this to my bike. Sorry, mine is a Vulcan 1700 Voyager, not a Goldwing. lol

Biggest issue on the tight fit is definitely the lug bolts against the tire itself. Once you clear that it has plenty of room. Getting the bike up high helps to give more room to wiggle the tire.
Hi Chris. I really enjoy your videos. I'm on my 4th Goldwing (1986 SEi; 1988; 2008; and my current 2021). I ran a car tire on my 2008 after some research and I got about 42K out of the tire I used. I don't remember the exact make/model. I would have to do some digging to find that info. When I first put the car tire on the back I saw it was going to be tight so I let the air out of the tire and it slipped right in. Just a thought for the future. Car tires expand more when inflated then motorcycle tires. I'm now pulling my 3rd trailer with the new Wing. My wife has to have "options". Be safe and God bless!

I run the driveguard on my concours 14 in 205-55/17. it's great. i have 10k on it so far and still looks fairly new. easily 20k on it before i look at changing it.
Remember to maintain your driveline on a regular basis.
With a motorcycle tire, I would do it with each tire change, but car tires last so long you have to pull the tire wheel every so often regardless of tire wear.

I'm still running my Bridgestone run flat I put on right after you did last year taking your advice, I have about 10k on mine so you gave me a good idea how long I have to go. On another video I think you said you had about 20k on yours

it is easier to pull down on your breaker bar than it is to push up to loosen your lug nuts......and ya won't hit your exhaust pipe......great video
another good tire size is the Dunlope 185/65/16. I use this tire on my 2002 VTX 1800
If you have trouble putting the dark tire on just deflate it!
Commentary and video spot on. Most importantly, congratulations on the safe high mileage on that tire you just rotated out Chris. When you keep your bike clean from top to bottom and all your gear in excellent condition you really set an great excellent example of how it’s should be done. The hallmark of a credible Club Leader and motorcycle lifestyle advocate. BTW, what was your mileage on that tire you just rotated out? Ride safe and ride often.
Around 20k, but it still has a lot of life remaining.

I run a michelin run flat on mine 28psi 25000 km and the middle of the tire has the same wear as the outside
Maybe I am stating the obvious but when I did this on my Wing, I let the air out of the tire. It made it a lot easier to slide into position. Also, with the Darkside tire, it is sooooo much better on gravel roads, like night and day difference......
Nice video Chris, I got a GL1800C Valkerie and was curious as to how the ride was without pulling the trailwer, the cornering stablity? any noticeable quirks associated with a car tire? weather performance? I hate changing tires every season and have always thought "why not " after getting a much heavier bike, Any info would be helpful, Thanks.

People can run car tires if they want and that’s fine, but I’ll stick to the motorcycle tires. I’ve heard it’s really tight and a little bit tricky to get the tires on and off and obviously that’s because the clearances in there are for motorcycle tires. Very informative video. Obviously dawn dishwashing liquid is good for many things. It is my go to hand cleaner because it works better than any other hand cleaner out there! 😂

FYI, all you have to do in most cases is let the air out of the tire and it slides right up in. After it's bolted down again, refill it to spec.

I have a 2005 Yamaha midnight warrior. My perelli bike tire i took off had 4000 on it a nd was worn out. 200 dollar tire came with bike as a spare when I bought it. Enough of that crappp Its a lot of work to change a tire. Watched cris video and studied tire reviews. I bought an Arroyo grand 2 205 50 17. Its got a fairly rounded profile for cornering, good reviews on dry and wet handling and 50,000 mile warranty which ill never use. Wife helped me mount it. Next time will be faster and easier. Learning curve of course. Under 70 bucks out the door. Started with 32 psi like a car tire. Mushy. Then I went with 36 like my bike tire. Better. Next was 41 . Pretty good. Cornered good, comfy ride. Next was 44. Felt OK but went back to 41 psi. I weigh 155 so a bigger guy might like more psi or if a passenger was added. Some handling differences from bike tire. Uneven surfaces like going off street into parking lots it shifts (wiggles) a little more and making tight or u turns takes getting used to but its just a learning curve like going from one bike tire to the next. Just takes a little longer. More bar pressure is used and more body English, but thats expected with a different profile tire whether its bike or car. Cars are noticeable with different tires so no big deal. Like it or don't. Lots of bad reviews on car tires so choose carefully and don't buy the cheapest out there. Even some expensive tires stink and don't stick good . High mileage tires usually don't have good traction so stick with lower mileage tires. So far after a few hundred miles I'm still getting used to it but my confidence is growing. And I really like the way it brakes better. A 650 pound bike with a 2 inch wide contact patch just sliiiiides at stop signs and lights. Even scarier while aiming at a bumper at speed. More confidence now. I would definitely buy another car tire.
Hi Chris nice video, curious what size tire you were running on there. also just a heads up from what I learned on my Valkyrie riding on the dark side. Over-inflated tire by about five to seven pounds and it will fit right in there and then bring it back to its proper pressure.

Hello to Chris Caliente I am a fellow Gold wing rider I have a 2005 GL 1800 . My question to you is that I'm 6 foot 6 and don't have enough room in the sadel my nees are in the dash. I have to sit on a cousin to try to get further back. Can not afford a new seat. I try to get some one to modify it for me but they couldent. How can I make my ride more enjoyable
How are you? Don't wait too long to use that brand new motorcycle tire because it can deteriorate with time although it's brand-new! You don't want to use it and it blow out on you because of its age!

Putting any dish soap, even Dawn directly on plastics, rubber, or rims with a protective coating is generally a bad idea, unless you plan on rinsing it off. You can look up why, but should be obvious, detergents on petroleum products, great for cleaning, not great for protective film on rims, and rubber tires, or black plastics. Like I said, simple just to rinse it off, or at least dilute the product in a squirt bottle, since it has the same affect. Probably a bit anal to worry about, but it's still worth mentioning, since it's one of the causes for that milky coating on rims flaking off, and weakened plastics that get brittle over time. Dish soap is a lot more powerful than we think on petroleum, we see it as gentle and benign, even though it's one job is to 'lifts, and loosens up oil based debris, and separates the oily grime'... so it makes sense. I hate even knowing about it, lol, I was fine being oblivious, so maybe I should apologize, nah.

With it being such a tight squeeze, you don't worry about the tire rubbing and causing heat? Why don't you use a smaller size tire that'll fit up in there better? I'm new to being a GW rider and I am watching different videos for ideas and have been thinking of Darksiding.
Just installed the exact same tire on my 06 Goldwing. Your video guidance made it a smooth operation. The soap trick made all of the difference. Thanks for what you do!
P.S. - Afte installing and riding for a couple hundreds miles, here are my thoughts. I run at 42 psi. The bike is much more stable when stopping as it wants to stand up on it's own. I compare that feeling to a weeble wobble toy. That's a plus. It takes just a tad bit more effort to initially lean the bike in slow curves, but once it breaks that initial point , it is the same as a MT with no perceivable additional effort. I don't consider that a negative, but just a difference. I feel that I have much more traction in hard leans without any feeling that it will kickout from underneath me. That may just be a mental thing. Lastly, the tire just seems to roll easier when I am backing up or moving the bike with my feet while setting on the bike. At this point, I have nothing negative to say about the switch to a CT (Bridgestone Driveguard). I thought that I would share these thoughts for any veiwers of this video. Thanks again.

@@Francis0275 I ran the 195/55/16 Drive Guard at
37 psi. Got 28,800 miles out of it. Replaced with Pirelli P7 of the same size at 30 psi. Like it much better than the drive guard. 37 psi is too much in the drive guard probably should run around 32 psi.

Chris, where have you gotten your collection of wheels from? Did you buy them all new? Talking to CSC at wing ding, they said they sell used wheels for $275 I believe. I think I will ask at my local Honda dealer if any trike conversions come in that I would be interested in getting a wheel, if the price is right. Got any suggestions? BTW I run 42lbs in my Alpin zp, seems to be wearing even.

I have an tire man in my area that will mount a car tire if you have it off the bike. I bought my tire guage at Tractor Supply.

you are running your tire pressure to high for the centre to wear more than the outside
if you let the air out of the tire it will come out easy
What pressure are you running in the tire because it’s wore in the middle witch indicates to much air pressure. Need to run car tire pressure and not motorcycle tire pressure because it’s not a motorcycle tire.
Have you ever seen a Honda Goldwing wear the rear tire evenly? I would say you haven't because the goldwing wears down the middle of any tires this is why the regular motorcycle tires get flat in the back regardless of the normal tire pressure.
Chris, by any chance do you know what tire is being used for the Darkside technique on the 2018 and newer Goldwing?

Hi there Chris Caliente. How many miles did you get out of your first car tire and what air pressure did you run in it?? I'm going Tuesday for my first car tire to dark side my goldwing. Any word of wisdom before I take my first ride Tuesday evening on the dark side?
I had around 20k, if I were you I would pratice in a parking lot making a few turns, then ride at least 500 miles to break the tire in. It will feel funny at first but stick with it until it feels normal, slow down in the curbs until you get use to it.

Isn't that Bridgestone a 60,000 mile tire? Any thoughts on why you only got 20,000 miles? I would expect it would last longer than 60k on a motorcycle.
Please understand that I didn’t change the tire because it needed it, I changed it because I had a second new tire just sitting on a spare rim collecting dust. I could have easily not changed it and kept riding like most people would, I just like the looks of new tires. Who knows I may decide to put the use tire back on the bike.
It's the 2mm of tread remaining that I worry about. Many say to change a tire at 3mm remaining.
Oh, sorry, I forgot to say, "Thank you for responding to my comment." Its great to have conversations with others who ride on the Darkside. I need to determine how many miles I have on mine and how much tread I have left. I do run at 41 psi. I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

The tire is rated max 51 psi cold.
I run mine at 36 psi
@@chriscaliente5033 I know that, but why so high? All I heard mostly is in the range of 28 to 41 psi. But not 45 to 50 psi. I ask because I just need your experience on that high psi. BTW, I have mine @ 35 psi.
Gershon Quidayan 28 may be good for riding in snow but that’s considered flat that low pressure will increase the friction, if your bike has TPMS I wouldn’t run it lower than 41psi. If I wanted a softer ride, I would mount a none runflat tire which would really feel better. Pulling my trailer and riding two up, higher pressure works best for me.
Since the tire depth was 1mm less in the middle would you say you were running the tire to low on psi?
No because I keep my rear tire between 46-50 psi cold.
Typically over inflation will cause premature wear to the center of the tire, and under inflation will cause premature wear to the outer edges of the tire.
A big heavy Goldwing is hard on the center of any tire, all Goldwing riders will see their rear motorcycle tires getting worn in the center and not the outter, the same concept will apply to a car tire mounted on the Goldwing, the center of the tire will wear down first because most of the motorcycle riding is strait up and down, this is normal wear for a Goldwing, I never over or under inflate my tires.

Chris, thanks for this tutorial. Isn't there a problem having tire stores agreeing to mount car tires on motorcycle wheels? How do you get around that obstacle?
My tire man is a former Honda mechanic, he has his own shop now.
I got my car tire mounted at a place that won't do it again. They broke my TPMS so I'm running without it. I'm thinking about buying the equipment to do it myself, but hoping to find someone who already has the equipment. Great job, Chris, on finding a guy.
Redskins Pride WGIL if you live in the DMV they have many places to mount your tire. I go to a tire shop in PG County on Richie Marlboro Road. They did mine with no problem.

I didn't realize the Goldwing had a one sided rear wheel mount. I thought they had an axle that went through the wheel...

When removing let some of the air out
Why didn’t you break the lug nuts free while the wheel was still on the ground instead of putting all the breaking force on your transmission?
How the heck would you get the clearance between the ground itself and the center hub/lugs with it on the ground? You'd only have about 6-8 inches or room to play with and most ratchets are at least 8 inches long unless you used a stubby ratchet but then you'd have no leverage.
There's only a very small window of area to get at the lugs with it up in the air let alone on the ground because of the side bags. He did it correctly and it isn't going to hurt that transmission one bit. It's basically the same way the dealership would do it accept they have more specialized equipment to do it with.

I have a 2004 Wing. I wouldn't think of putting an AUTO tire on it. The HONDA manual states that this type of tire is DANGEROUS.
What will happen if you have to tilt the motorcycle in the corner? Here in Hungary, you would not get the green light at the technical test (every 2 years). they risk their lives. WORTH IT ?

Totally agree! First, you buy some top-of-the-line tourer and then you are trying to budget on tires and putting yourself and your dear spouse in extreme danger??? Makes no sense to me! On my GL1800 go only motorcycle tires Bridgestone G704/G709 or Dunlop Elite 4. Amen!
@@chgotom I get a huge laugh from ignorant, but probably well-meaning people that think, for real, that the _only_ reason us darksiders use car tires on our bikes is to save a few bucks. How dumb is that? Sure, saving money is great but superior ride, being able to use run flat (hence safer) tires, and great traction wet or dry. Three bikes, three car tires on the rear, 250,000 miles, big grin. Amen!!

@@chgotom Oh my goodness! Are you not aware that motorcycle companies do not make any money off the customer after the sale unless they bring back in their bikes for service? Of _course_ they want you to wear out your tires quick so you can be back in spending more money! Duh! But *thousands* of us darksiders and the _billions_ of miles that we have racked up running a CT says that there is often, but not aways, something better out there. But hey! If you are afraid to try it then by all means do not. But the 250,000 miles that I have put on with three different machines running a CT tells me that there is always a better way. And if you don't like it, fine by me! 👍👍
