Thanks for the great video. Question for you: around 4:35 when you're working those weeds, it seem like your scraping them at the surface and not digging up the roots. Is that what you're doing? Am I taking extra extra way too long when I'm trying to dig up and remove the roots of every single weed in my beds?
Justin - thanks for watching and writing! This hoe does indeed use a slicing action to remove weeds. What is not so apparent is that by applying moderate down-pressure on the handle, like I was in the video, is that the blade edges are riding along just under the soil surface, slicing off the weeds just below the soil line. For the majority of annual weeds, like the pigweed you see in the episode, this is fatal to them. You don't need to remove the root mass; it rots in the ground adding organic material to the soil. If you watch a bit longer, you can see where I mention that for more mature weeds that are harder to slice off, simply hook the hoe behind the weed, press down and pull back to "pop" it out. Experimentation in your plot will tell you which weeds don't come back from the root mass and which do. Grasses tend to regenerate from the root mass. I hope this helps! Best, DFJ
Thanks for watching and commenting Tundra Guy. Actually you are slicing (and pretty much destroying) the roots if you use the tool properly. You bear down and slice through under the ground not just lopping off the top of the plant. Sorry if the video didn't show this well enough. Best, DFJ
Just found your channel. Love the content!
Awesome, thank you!
Great looking tools, I love the wood handles and that they are made in the USA.
Us too Drew. Made in the USA is the best. Keep watching and commenting. Best, DFJ

@@DirtFarmerJay thank you! Nice to learn about killing the seeds that way!
👌👏👍😊🇮🇳
Problem with these tools is that the roots are still in the soil and the weed will grow back. You're essentially just mowing the top of the weed.
