    Great video! I'm happy to see there is strict veterinary control. As long as the welfare of the horse is #1, so that riding the horses into the ground to win isn't rewarded in any way, it seems like an awesome challenge! I do agree with other comments though that claiming the "toughest horse race" title over Tevis is cheeky, when comparing the details of the two races. Other than that, it's great to see videos on other epic endurance races and their participants!

      This vs Tevis are completely different breeds of events. There is a reason the North American endurance circuit and the international endurance world often don't mix.
      North America/Tevis has a lot of terrain and elevation gain. International rides in other countries and the middle east are often flat out canter-gallop races. Often in very hot temperatures. Compare the finishing times of the Al Ula cup and Tevis. A lot of the flat races finish in less than half the time than the Tevis. Tevis is climb, technical, lots of trotting. Al Ula is mostly canter for hours.
      You really can't compare them.
      Flat out endurance races is how endurance began the origins with Arabian horses. You see lots of partbreds, Morgans, OTTBs and even QH at Tevis. Not happening on the international circuit.

    This race is all galloping and loping Exceptionally hard on horse and rider. I had a friend years ago trained his horse in Death Valley. 🥵😬 Personally I wouldn’t do it. Amen to those who do👍

      @elenacaddell3639 Once a horse has a high level of cardiovascular fitness (and all of these horses do), cantering actually is easier on them than trotting. They have conducted studies which show that when a fit horse canters, the rolling motion of the stride pushes the air out of the lungs which then refill due to pressure difference inside vs outside during the suspensionphase of each canter stride, so a horse "auto breathes" every stride without additional muscle effort which is necessary during trotting. The heart consequently also has to work less when the lungs breathe basically without any additional muscular effort.
      A very fit horse will be able to canter on the flat for longer and with a lower pulse out at the vet gate than if it was trotting.
      This is not true for your novice endurance or regular riding horse.

    Are Arabs the most common horse raced? Average age of the horses? Any weight restrictions? the vets are under a lot of pressure.

      @@HorseTVGlobal They are actually totally different disciplines! The Tevis is much slower and mountainous. You do not lope very much and at times you have to walk and or jog with your horse because the terrain is so steep and rocky. I love it all.

    • @lyncheeseman
      @lyncheeseman ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@vickyburton2434 I believe both are totally different, one is across desert . The other is slower , riders can get off ,walk or run next to the horse plus water crossings so the horse can get a drink.

    Seriously? The HORSE did 99.5% of the work! Okay, after watching this video again, I’ll adjust my original percentage to 65% to the horse…. And for clarification, I have owned and ridden horses for over 35 years, so I “do” know a little bit about riding. My first horse was a National Show Horse, so I’m familiar with Arabs. I’ve been blessed with Walkers, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Appaloosa’s, and my current horse is a Missouri Fox Trotter/Spotted Walking Horse. I’ve worked cows, done police clinics, charity fundraiser rides, and many many trail rides. I know that riders or anyone working with large animals have to be in good physical shape, so I didn’t mean to discredit their participation. But lets be real, I would DIE if you strapped on only 75lbs to my back and had me jog through a desert! I don’t care how long I trained, so I still stand by my belief that the horse deserves more credit.
