A seizure is an abnormal burst of electrical activity in the brain. When this happens, pets may fall on their sides, paddle their limbs, vocalize, urinate or defecate unexpectedly.
In this video, we see two different dogs having a seizure and experiencing most of the symptoms mentioned above.
If your pet is suffering from a seizure, we encourage you to call your primary veterinarian or emergency animal hospital.

What causes this I have a little terrier

    • @SEVNeurology
      @SEVNeurology  4 ปีที่แล้ว +325

There are many causes of seizures. I separate them into three main categories: 1. Causes outside the brain like toxins, low blood sugar and liver problems 2. Causes inside the brain like meningitis, brain tumors and strokes and 3. Idiopathic epilepsy.
It is important to find out which one is the cause since this helps with treating the seizures.
Tests often include blood tests, X-rays, and MRI and a spinal tap.

@@jakeslade8518 I'm so sorry to hear that.. mine saw the vet today they put him on Kepra 3 times a day, hes has had small seizure now every morning since the first one Saturday. They say being hes 11 and older and his blood work looked good its more likely a brain tumor.. and to just see how the meds work and let him continue out his life as normal ... it heartbreaking💔 i just don't want him to suffer.. I took him to a 24/7 emergency hospital today bc I couldn't get a regular vet appointment till Friday, but there was so many young dogs there with different types of cancer . One just had his spleen out due to cancer, another only 6 years old had bone cancer, the sad part is alot of people cant afford the treatments. Its so sad.. It cost me 800 just for them to take a blood test, start his first dose of meds thru IV, a 10 day supply of meds, and a nail trim.. They at first wanted too keep him overnight for observation, that was a little over 3 grand.. they told me that I wanted to cry bc I cant afford 3 grand , and I told them that but they did work with me and got me to a price I could afford.. my heart literally hurts.. @@devincarter8659 Same thing with my dog Shiva. She's 16 in a couple months. She's had vestibular disease for a couple years now. I'm pretty sure her case is caused by a tumor. Tonight Shiva had a seizure for the first time. Froze up mid walk and bonked her face on the side of my bed before I caught her. Her face was twitching side to side while the rest of her body was stiff as a board. I'm going call the doc in the morning. I'm fairly sure she will say Shiva has a brain tumor. But at 16 Shiva probably wouldn't survive surgery even if that was an option. So I'm guessing we'll get some seizure meds and we'll hope for the best. In the meantime I'm doing the same as you did. I have the dog laid down next to me in bed watching her. What else can you do?

This was a long time ago, but in case anybody else sees this: dogs are not conscious during these moments and are not afraid. The vocalisations are just caused by the spasms of muscles in the throat.
Dogs might be disorientated or sore after a seizure, but they're not in pain while it's happening because they're not aware. They can't choke on their tongue, so don't put your hand near their mouth. Don't try to hold them down (you can put your hand or a pillow under their head if they are at risk of injuring it). Just keep yourself, any other animals or people nearby and the dog safe.
The best thing you can do is film the seizure, time it, and take them to the vet to try to figure out what's going on -- it's only an emergency if the seizure continues for more than 3-4 minutes, if they're having seizures back-to-back, or if you think that they may have ingested a toxin such as snail bait or rat poison. Obviously a seizure that occurs without obvious cause (such as pre-existing epilepsy) should be investigated, but try not to panic. Full body seizures look horrible, but there's typically no immediate danger.
Other types of seizures include absences (dogs are not aware and may stare into the distance for a while before seemingly acting normally again) and partials (dogs may be aware and it can just be uncontrolled blinking or twitching). Not all look this violent. The dog may simply stiffen and twitch. You should record any seizure activity and make a vet appointment.

I experienced seizures with my last dog. Although the vet said be careful if close because she can inadvertently bite, I stayed close to her every time and pet her during and comforted her afterward. Don't let your pet go through this alone. Can you imagine going through that and waking up without anyone near you? Stay close and comfort your pet through something like this. It's traumatic for everyone.

When your dog is having a seizure you need to be as calm as possible. They react to the stress at that moment and this can bring another seizure.

As I can remember, even my dog had seizure. It happened in December of the last year. A (probably) week earlier, my dog began to have problems with peeing. He also almost wasn't able to walk, he didn't want to just make a few steps. Usually, there were a lots of urine puddles all over the flat. It felt really terrible to only see it. He was in huge pain. As the days went by, my dad got an idea to take him to veterinary. That evening, we were siting in waiting room. My dog was in front of my eyes and connected to the drip. Suddenly, he got a seizure. It was pretty terrifying and very emotional experience to me. Then on January 19th this year, my dog passed away in consulting room. What was actually the worst and best on his death? The worst was, that I was there with him and saw my dog dying. The best on his death was, that he finnaly feel anything. No pain, just nothing.

My dog has had seizures since he fell down the stairs in 2019 and had thousands of pounds worth of tests and is now on the same meds as your dog and he lives a full active life. When he fits I make sure he can't hurt himself and i just stroke him and tell him he's a good boy and wait for him to come out of it, it takes about 20mins from start to finish then I give him a doggy biscuit just so he's got something to eat for energy. I thought this video was going to show people how to handle a dog in a seizure. The lady did well with the first dog. I had a beagle who had seizures. You don't stand across the room crying, while your dog is fighting a frickin' seizure! You go to your dog, support him, and make sure his limbs are not in a position in which they could be broken or dislocated. I got my dog on his side and gently held him next to my body if I could safely get him in that position. Other times, when I caught him at the beginning and he was in a sit, I sat behind him, straddling him and held him up so that he wouldn't fall and get his legs into a compromising position. Eventually, I learned to predict seizures and I was able to lessen the severity and sometimes prevent them all together by going to his side, holding him, calming him, and projecting love and compassion.

I just want to say to everyone who has experienced this and those who are still experiencing this stay strong I know how it feels and to those who lost their bestfriends due to seizures like me I send my love. Only thing you can do is make sure there's nothing around them they can hurt themselves on. If you have to move them, stay away from the mouth.

When my dog first had siezures she had about 17 in 24 hours. Very similar to the second dog. It was a bit of a balancing act with her medication dosage and she had a second seizure cluster 4 months after but now her dosage is sorted she rarely has seizures at all (I believe her last one was half a year ago) and has scans yearly to check the dosage/effect on her liver. Best wishes to the owners of those dogs though. It's never easy seeing them go through that.

For the second one you need to stay calm and go to the dog's side. Make sure if they vomit they don't aspirate or that they don't move into a position they can hurt themselves in. When a dog comes out of an episode they can be very confused and scared and need a lot of reassurance.

Had a dog who in the later years of his life would have seizures. It was the scariest thing for me to witness he would fall to his side and twitch violently and would pee himself. I can't imagine the pain and fear he would have. My dad would make everyone leave the room when our dog was having a seizure and he would stay with him to comfort him. After the seizure they used to go outside. Sadly after my parents split and we lost our house we had to put our dogs in the shelter. I don't know what happened to him or my other dog, but I miss them so much. I hope that my old timer was put to sleep peacefully

My 11 year old dog had two seizures about 4 days apart. She passed after then second seizure. Its a horrible experience for the owner. There is no way to comfort your dog during a seizure.
Of course after the first seizure I was there to comfort her. For about 5 minutes she was disoriented and searching rooms in the house. 10 minutes later she was fine, and told me that she wanted her afternoon meal.
What I find confounding is possible seizures that she had that I did not witness. I could have been running errands or simply in a different room.

My senior dog he’s age 16 years old ,he had a seizure at daycare, I got a phone call and text message from his daycare that he had a seizure and I was a breaking down crying. I was in complete shock and I raced to the daycare to ask more questions about what happened. The daycare wouldn’t let me leave until I calmed down from crying so much. I was working a shift when I found out , I got a voicemail from the daycare about what happened and if I wasn’t working that time, I would of definitely went and got him right away.
He was out for a month due to a drug overdose and was in the hospital for 3 days. I kept him home for safety reasons and to get an approval from his vet, the vet said he can go back and it’s safe. That 1st day back at daycare. He had the seizure. He’s fine now and hasn’t had another seizure since but I am still scared for that.

One of our dogs, named Rusty, once had a seizure, but it was less like a genuine seizure, and more along the lines of him just "seizing up".
    No spazing.
    No pained howls.
    None of that.
    It was still scary though.

    • @SEVNeurology

The S.S.G. Most seizures are self limiting like the ones seen here. Make sure the pet isn’t near a hazard such as a pool or stairs. If seizures last more than 3 minutes or if there are multiple in one day, take them to the emergency vet or neurologist right away.

I woke up this morning at around 7:20AM and my dog Bailey was on the floor of my room having a seizure. I was so dazed and confused that I didn’t know he was having one for a whole minute but I tried to keep him on his side. It was heartbreaking to see him running in circles in an unbalanced fashion the house crying afterwards. Been with him the whole day and when things seemed to get better after a few hours I let him out in the backyard and he had another seizure. This time foaming and running away from me before collapsing. I don’t know if anyone will see this but if you do I would appreciate any prayers for him.
Edit: After over a day and 15 seizures later our family was unable to pay for further medical treatment and euthanized him. Rest easy Bailey.

My Nan's dog that lived in my house had just recently passed away from seizure like 2 days ago. It was an Australian Cattle Dog (a Blue Heeler to be exact), but I remember when he was still alive and he (along with my Nan) had moved into my house last year back in 30th of July (My Nan had dementia and is in the hospital now), I was not only afraid of that dog, because he would bite me uncontrollaby, but I grew to hate him, due to his constent barking (It's a long story), especially when it sounded aggressive. But then on the 17th of June, I didn't know that the dog had any seizures, until my mom told me later that night. The dog must've licked bug spray by accident while I was giving him doggy treats (I didn't poison him, but I thought there was a fly buzzing around). The last time I saw him, he was laying on the floor at the kitchen before I went into the bathroom to take a dump and clean my teeth. So my parents took him to the vet (I didn't go, and neither did my brothers). I don't know how old that dog was exactly, but I'm guessing either 11 or 12? But since then, I started to feel depreesed with grief.
