I'm 85 years old. I seen ELVIS in concert in 1956 and 1957 and 1975. 56 and 57 it was wild. Women went crazy. They climbed over chairs and rushed the stage. They screamed ELVIS over and over. ELVIS was very polite between songs he would talk to the audience. ELVIS was full of energy and non stop on stage. 1975 show was incredible. Women cried and yelled his name. He put on a fantastic show. Women wouldn't leave after the show was over and that was the first time I heard over the speakers ELVIS has left the building. I have been to many concerts ROCK AND country. No one person or band comes close to Elvis. His movies or concerts or interviews on tape are nothing. You had to see him live to feel the magic and excitement. The people who didn't see him live really missed out on the greatest show on earth as Tom Hank's said.

@@geeebuttersnap2433 Yes, that is why he is the GOAT; that Magic comes through in the videos of many of his live performances. It’s that IT factor that he had in abundance and his ability to draw you in. Thank goodness he left us with a lot of material, videos and such. If you want to watch what it was like in the early 70’s the movie “Elvis That’s The Way It Is” is fantastic. I wish I had seen him in the beginning of his career, but before my time.

It was more than charisma, it was his humanity and his southern roots, his generosity, his good looks and the fact that he was a talented vocalist beyond belief. It was his story, and his tragedy. He was an absolute, humble, southern gentleman who could electrify a crowd with a few backup singers and a few instruments. He didn't need fireworks and grand or elaborate set design. His striking good looks were the icing on the cake. It has been said more than once that when he entered a room not only were all eyes on him but everyone knew they were standing in the presence of greatness. While most looked at him like an enigma, when he spoke you saw the man who feared going on stage, he feared disappointing people, he was seriously imperfect... yet he was embraced by a world who loved him .. warts and all. His death created an international shockwave where remnants still linger on the anniversary of his death where 10's of thousands of people come from around the world to pay their respects. I'm a native Memphian, I've seen it. He will never be forgotten since his legacy is literally passed down through families. He was different in all ways not just musically. I watched an interview the other day of Baz (researching for his movie) and a black gentleman named Sam who was one of Elvis's good friends in Tupelo. Something Sam said stuck with me. He said, when Elvis was moving away from Tupelo to Memphis everyone worried about him since they felt people would never understand him and he would be mistreated. He lived in the ghetto and his love for the black community and theirs for him was genuinely evident in this interview. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/w-d-xo.html

He was drafted into the army. He made 3 movies before the army and had to fulfill his contract after he returned. He hated the movies. As a huge fan, it’s not about the actor looking like him or getting his voice just right…it’s about telling the story…showing who Elvis really was. The Colonel was Dutch and an illegal immigrant thus why Elvis never performed overseas. Being a big fan, there is so much detail in the trailer…Baz really got it.

I agree it is the story that is the important thing. And from that trailer, I am concerned about the beginning. His early days were the most important part of his life and I don't quite get the feel that they are going to capture that very well. It seems they are overly simplifying that part of his life and I get the feel that they are going to rush through that and not give it enough importance. Hopefully not but we'll see.

I lived in Memphis for about 30 years. I was at a football game in 1975 and the whole west side of the Liberty Bowl started standing up and looking up. I thought there might be a fight. There was an odd feeling buzzing. Suddenly a figure up in the press box stood up and waved to the crowd. It was Elvis. Amazing that someone could captivate a crowd of 50,000 especially those on the west side of the stadium.

Even his Aloha from Hawaii concert he looked so damn good! I love all Elvis from his rebel rock days to his Vegas days. He always worked his hardest to put on a good show and as a result of his 640 some Elvis shows he sold out 635 in Vegas alone.

Heck! The first time I saw Elvis perform live was at 13 in Las Vegas in 1970! The early years of Vegas at the International. He was Electrifying and I became a huge fan. We lucked out and were close to the stage. Not too many words that can describe his voice, performance, charisma, just WOW! Anyway, I saw him several times in Vegas. Maybe the latter years of Vegas, he was perhaps tired of performing there, but he always put on a phenomenal show. I also saw him in concert many times. So….while all my friends were into the Stones, and the other fantastic bands at the time, I was going to see ‘E’… and most of them were converted to Elvis fans once they saw the man live. Concerts were crazy……Vegas was too, but different type of crowd, but regardless Elvis was Elvis no matter where he performed…just no one like him and likely never will be.

Elvis' earlier 1950's dress sense marks him as a true style icon. And it feels particularly relevant today - Cuban collar shirts, wide-legged, pleated trousers, blousons - these are all garments making the rounds on the menswear circuit, but they were also integral to Elvis’ 1950s style wardrobe. He did it all first.

I think Kathy may be right about Austin Butler being able to bring his own charisma to the screen. Almost unanimously, most Elvis fans when they first saw his picture, and found out he was going to be the one playing Elvis, were disappointed. Saying he looks nothing like him, how can he play Elvis, couldn't they have picked somebody better? But I noticed that after watching the trailer, almost everyone changed their mind about him, and think he might pull it off. So if he can convince people that he might make a good Elvis, in those few seconds of clips that we see of him, I'd say he's already displaying a certain amount of that "it" factor that Elvis had.

His downfall definitely coincided with his divorce in 1973 which was shortly after the globally televised Aloha Concert. Priscilla took his beloved daughter, Lisa Marie, to California after the divorce was final. Keep in mind that Elvis did not ever like to be alone, especially knowing that his little girl Lisa was now 3,000 miles away and I’m certain that he still loved Priscilla.
He had a couple girlfriends, but that wasn’t any consolation considering all that he lost.
It was obvious that he went steadily downhill and would die only four short years later at the young age of 42. A very sad ending for a man of his talent, generosity, character and faith.
It’s been said many times that God was showing off when he created Elvis.

I think all the Elvis impersonators (some quite grotesque) that came out after his passing have done a lot to damage how the Vegas era is remembered. No one will ever look or sound like Elvis and that is a huge hurdle to get over.... Eddie Murphy said that Elvis had more charisma than any other entertainer in history so who ever took the Elvis role had to try and get the essence of Elvis....he was the blueprint of everything good and bad in the entertainment industry...he was like a lightening bolt in the 1950s and even though his movies became the same format after the first 3 or 4 he still had screen presence...68Special he showed that he was as good as any new artists out there and early 70s he set the Las Vegas standard...even his outfits were again setting a fashion statement...look at the Osmonds, the Jacksons etc... unfortunately like the movies the Colonel, who was an illegal alien in the USA from Holland, real name Andreas Cornelius Van Kuyk, starved Elvis of so many opportunities, like top quality movies, overseas performances and so from 75-77 his health declined because of artistic boredom and Elvis' loyalty to the Colonel was eventually his undoing.

The one and only King. There is no doubt about that. Every now and then I watch his appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Goodness, almost seventy years later and he still thrills. I can't imagine how that looked to someone in the mid 1950s. Thank you for the comment, SJ TL.

Bad guidance? To quote John Lennon "before Elvis there was nothing". No one had yet achieved the level of fame, popularity and superstar that Elvis achieved. There was no road map, there was no guide book, Elvis was in uncharted waters. Now granted, The colonel hindered as much as he helped elvis. He was a gambler with debts who used Elvis and IS considered by my mother the villain of Elvis' story.
As a kid I remember watching Elvis on TV, in the white jumpsuit, with my mom. She wasnt a screaming Elvis girl but she would swoon like the rest. Lol

You don't know what you are talking about really. Older Elvis you think right away to Vegas Elvis? He had his best concerts at that time like in 1973 Hawaii concert, that is his best concert ever so don't come here and like say 70's Elvis was not as good bc he was and even better, his voice was alot better in the late 60's and 70's...
And the idea of Vegas shows was seen differently back then than you do today, now you only think about stars that gone down hill, they are the ones going to Vegas but back then it was not like that, Vegas shows was quite a new thing back then and had alot more prestige than Vegas has today. And what else should he had done? You can not keep singing 50's songs, you must change with time and he is one of very few who stayed relevent for 3 decades.

Of course I'm a Tom Hanks fan, like every person is, but I've also been an Austin Butler fan for quite some time as well. So this movie works for me. Butler's Elvis impression is also excellent. So different from his real voice - coming from someone who obviously knows what his real voice sounds like, so I was impressed when I saw the trailer.
Most people would know Austin Butler from the Sex and the City prequel "The Carrie Diaries". But I mainly like him from his ViaCom (including Paramount and Nickelodeon) and Disney stuff - both tv shows and movies.
Tom Hanks is trying to a Dutch accent; for the same reason he has prosthetics; he's playing Colonel Tom Parker whose family 'is' from the Netherlands and was sadly a bit of a big boy.
As a reaction, I liked this. It was honest and I respect the honesty. And you all seem to care about truly sharing your thoughts. Something interesting I picked up on though.

    Mixed feelings:
    * * * That accent has got to go. Hanks is a great actor who cannot do accents well. I'll get lots of push back, but even the Forest Gump accent sounded so 'made up.' We've all come to accept it, so who knows.
But my biggest beef is what Hanks said in an interview. Colonel Parker (his part in the movie) is the only reason for Elvis' success. Certainly Elvis had the talent, and the Colonel had no part in that aspect. I guess I'll grant him knowing how to market elvis, up to a point.
His influence on a young Elvis to sign a long term movie contract (10 yrs) because Elvis was getting out of the army & the Colonel wanted a sure-income was the biggest mistake, and clear the Colonel was looking out for himself in that decision. It was signed at a time when Elvis movies were still very good, but little did Elvis know what being locked-in to a 10 yr contract meant. He'd have to take all the Garbage movie scripts & movie music which would stigmatize him to this day.
Often newcomers to elvis make this mistake. They don't see his career in totality, rather just the stupid movies on tv they saw him singing Old McDonalds Farm. They don't know of the 68 comeback.
Just from the trailer, not knowing what else is in the movie, my biggest complaint may be that all of these elvis bio's only focus on the R&B aspect, which was a fraction of his music catalog. His other BIG influences were Country (Hank Williams, Hank Snow), Bluegrass(Flatt & Scruggs, Bill MOnroe), Gospel (ie: JD Sumner), and POP Ballad Crooners like (Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, & Mario Lanza).
But I assume we won't be hearing about it, because only the R&B controversy gets media attention.

    • @CinemondoPodcast
      @CinemondoPodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Agree on the Hanks accents. They could have gotten an excellent character actor to play Parker, but they probably needed/wanted the big star. Otherwise, you have Austin Butler, who is not a household name. But all your points are valid.

I was wondering about that -- but it may be worth it if the depiction is done faithfully and with love for all that is Elvis! 👑

None of you appear to be Elvis fans and it shows. Too much criticism of Elvis without even talking about the movie. Will ignore your channel hence forth.

Sorry Sergio - We were just reacting to a Baz Luhrmann trailer but will definitely bring our Elvis appreciation to the full film when we get more context!

Sorry if we came off that way, Jim. But we are Elvis fans and know how talented Baz Luhrmann is as a director. We'll try and be more energetic next time. And we are looking forward to this film. Thanks.

Your review was worthless. You might want to do some research on movies before you talk about them. The movie is based around Tom Hanks Colonel character and not Elvis.

I love watching all these no names reviewing movies they have no idea about.

We are watching trailers cold and reacting to just what we know from the trailer. When we review the film we can do background. Just how it works!

@@CinemondoPodcast So watching trailers is what you do? As I said maybe a little research???

Have you guys ever looked at your hair in the mirror. Now that is crazy no hair. Elvis' hair was copied by millions. Yours will not be. Sorry.

It's Baz Luhrmann. He's an over-stylized filmmaker - but it might just work for a story about Elvis. We'll see!

This is an unfounded review. Tom Hanks poor performance ?? Not sure what you are coming from - I think you will be proved wrong. Never again with your reviews.

We may have gotten it wrong - just going off the trailer which can often give the wrong impression. Hanks is a great actor and this film looks great. Long live The King! ❤️❤️❤️
