There is a round door that you can only get to by flying in the northeast of the dravanian forelands. That could possibly be the round door from the dungeon.
These "web" things looks a bit like the structures used to seal some passages in Dzemael Darkhold 🤔. Not sure it's related, but kinda looks like it. Also, this really looks something made by a dragon. Even the size of the room! It really looks like something to accommodate a dragon. And after knowing about Ishgard point of view, back then...
yoship should really make an expansion in which we travel to the past and experience all these areas that already exist and have been designed (of course they are to be redesigned) and just let us take part in battles of the past and let us experience how eorzea got to its current state.
No warlords of eorzea plz, I mean it would be great if done right, but wow has already proven how much time travel can completely shatter a carefully crafted story
@@Gorophorge Tbh the script writers of WoW are not quite on the same level as those in FFXIV. Quality of writing is much better in FFXIV (no matter how much the localization butchers it) It doesn't need to be time travel, it could just be explained as us getting visions of the past from Hydaelyn, for example.
Do you know what I absolutely hate about this series? That it's only once per month! Not gonna lie, SoaR is by far my most favorite series on this channel (aside from the podcasts and the minimum ilvl runs, but watching those live is more entertaining). I do understand that there is only so much you can cover and you have so much on your hands and editing these videos probably takes forever, that's why I'm not really mad! I'm just sad, because god do I love this kind of content >_< Now, this has got to be my fav episode so far. I did my own research and there is little to be found. My research made me encounter an item with a description mentioning its only obtainable from Hengr's Crucible, a post on the official forums someone from Limitbreak Radio made, a long list of unfinished/obscure places in 1.0 (can't link, it's from a gilselling site and I sure as hell don't want to advertise those) and someone that took lots of screenshots of these unused dungeons and even made maps! But nothing about Hengr herself. The only bit of info I found was overlapping what you mentioned in the video, that it was indeed supposed to be a 1.0 reference, but that's about it... Considering we are nearing 5.0, I think it's unreasonable to wish for any of these to be fleshed out more and implemented... The new entrance to Hengr's Crucible could be in the Dravanian Forelands. There is a small cave up in the north that has a door in it and nothing else. No FATEs spawn there, there are no monsters, nothing. If Hengr was a dragon or had to do with dragons, the location would fit. Thank you so much for these trips into the unknown. Looking forward for your next video! ♥
i saw a couple comments mentioning a mysterious round door in the dravanian forelands, so i went to check it out for myself. turns out there's a way to glitch inside via a hole in the top, but sadly there's nothing behind the door except empty space and the cave wall. still cool though
If Hengr was from Ishgard, she would have the dragon blood curse, so her witchery would mainly come from knowing people would turn into dragons when in contact with the blood of one.. the eggs in the area share the same look as dragon egg from the Arey, as does the webbing (dragon spit in the churning mists). If lore is retold... the Crucible in the sky would maybe used maybe by a Dragon Hengr? Just a thought on it. Would be sealed away by Ishgard too, if the population knew about the blood, would be bad news for all (but covered in HW).
If you ever played FFXI and paid attention to the lore, do you remember the legendary alchemist that went mad who said to live in hiding since the Crystal War? That's what it feels like this was referencing because bastok's Scholars did secret dealings and control for awhile in secret. Modern times was said to be in the section on konschtat that disappeared after the war..similar to sea of clouds formation. So it would have been interesting if they sorta made it as a spiritual successor storyline, since it's no secret this world has connections to vanadiel unless eureka isn't being considered canon.
Someone pointed out they look like dragon eggs. Is that round stone door really Ishgardian? Aren't those the same stone doors found in places like Anyx Trine? I figured that would make them Dravanian/draconic architecture?
Imagine if Hengr is still alive, with the calamity she was finally able to escape. Now she's out there, traveling the world as a harmless old lady, maybe we even talked to her without knowing it. Who knows what she might be up to.
Hm, a witch and everything in her lair has been turned to stone... I'm remembering *every single time* I've seen a boss use Petrifaction and now I have a cold sweat. D:
This feels like a video about someone going through a forest, and finding corpses of dead animals on his way.... but fun! It's spooky is what I;m saying!
Yeah, some of those "crucibles" and web things remind me a lot of dragon lair stuff, principally in the Aery, like broken eggs and those weird web/rope bridges.
You know, at the end when you said Sea of Clouds, for some reason I thought of the Dravanian Forelands, and the position relative to the map where Hengr's Crucible sits reminded me of something in that same place in the Forelands. A cut off area of land accessible only via flight, where you can find a circular, Dravanian style door randomly sitting there in the rock wall. Of course, I haven't gone through every class quest, so it could just be an area used by one of them, but... Idk. That door always struck me as odd and out of place.
If those were eggs, could it be possible that they were for giant spiders or diremites that Hengr altered with magic to make their webs turn to rock? Either way, this was a really cool episode and I can definitely see why it inspired the whole series. Hope to see more soon!
I love this series. Everyone who played 1.0 should at least watch a few of these videos to see what we never got to play. And even people who are just curious about 1.0 should watch them. FFXIV's development prior to launch is such an interesting topic and I wish we could know what specifically went on behind closed doors that led to a lot of the bizarre decisions. I don't believe that Tanaka was particularly responsible for everything that occurred and he took the blame for what was likely a lot of SE executives interfering with the game's development.
Given the Nordic style of the name rather than the French sounding names of the Ishgardians wouldn't Hengr be a dragon, most likely a female one? That would explain the egg-like objects and why Ishgard wouldn't want anyone snooping around in there. Quite why they would imprison her rather than kill her is another question entirely though. Was the First Brood a thing during 1.0? Was there any information on the war with the Dravanians or was that added in 2.0? In fact was there any information about Dravanians others than Midgardsormr in 1.0?
From that final room with the Cauldrons and Eggshaped throne, I got the feeling of some Dark Souls Bloodborne aesthetics here. If hengir was a witch and if this was a prison then she probably was a heretic, and probably performed black magic rituals with Dragon Blood. Whatever was probably originally planned for Hengir was probably going to be something Dark. Maybe She over the years of her life kidnapped people and used them in Dark Experiments and all the "Cauldrons" Lining the rooms used to be eggshaped as well but the Ishgardians probably imprisoned her there as well as her "experiments". Either that or they built the prison inside her home after subduing her. And she probably went mad being trapped with her experiments and probably feasted upon them to stay alive and subsequently became cursed by her experiments flesh and blood causing the Bigger Egg shaped thing at the other end of the room.
I believe that although they scrapped 1.0 maps and dungeons they did keep the same plot... just added some fillers. In the end everything will make sense. They knew everything from the beginning.
Oh this is so cool! I want to go and see this duty. A spooky locked up witch sitting in a throne made of either spider egg or maybe a dragon egg. Your prison theory would have been amazing. She could have easily been a post 3.0 story. Kinda like a reverse lady IceHeart. FAN FIC WRITERS AWAY! But damn this was spooky and cool I love it! I never want to skip SoaR!
this has probably been asked and answered before but how do you get these. Id love to go back to 1.0 and explore for myself as well but I cant seem to find a private server that works as seventh umbral seems to be down for me.
Fun fact: Hengr's Crucible is actually an area waaaaay on the East side of the Sea of Clouds, meant to have beem ripped up from Coerthas via The Calamity - one od many obscure references to unused content in 1.0 to showcase the devastating upheaval of The Calamity. I like the idea of those being Dragon Eggs like those we see in The Aery, especially considering Hengr's connection to Ishgard. I would love to know the Lore that Koji & others had in mind for this!!
Really love these videoa. I wish they would have used some of these larger dungeons as resources int he game now. They could be exploring dungeons where we could go as a party of miners/botanists or a longer dungeon for people that enjoy dungeons. I love the creepy feeling these dungeosn give off.
To be fair, they'd just be reusing assets that were rightly scrapped for being relatively dull. Besides, as a dev, I know I'd have more fun designing new dungeons than trying to turn one of these older ones into something interesting. Don't get me wrong, I'd certainly love to see some of these brought back and given the purpose they originally were meant to serve, the one with the weird cylinder in the center of the main room coming to mind (I think it was meant to be an elevator a la Ocarina of Time Forest Temple), I just don't see it happening.
That was pretty cool. I know I'd love to see something like that explored in a sidequest later on, perhaps the witch has reawoken and wants revenge against Ishgard, not knowing about the whole Heavensward dealy, and the WoL has to venture through the maze of old Ishgardian prison and chewed up crystal landscape. Does anyone know if that mist effect is used anywhere else in 1.x?
Door is the same as Dzmael Darkhold's. Last room reminds me a bit of Aurum vale, perhaps also a previous Dragon hatchery? Hengr possibly being a heretic?
Would be kind of neat if the Calamity freed Hengr, or made the thing keeping them there weaker. Probably not going to happen as we are past HW, but still.
Those looked like the remains of dragon eggs to me, specifically petrified shells. Maybe Hengr was using dragons for her magic, or working with them in some capacity?
Loved this episode. I can see why this place would have been the inspiration to start SoaR: its very design leaves a lot of unanswered questions. I won't lie though; I'm a little disappointed that there were no Speakers Story elements in this video. Did plans just fall through this time around for some reason? Or have those story elements been shelved again? I hope it's not the latter, as scouring for those easter eggs and story hints is something I look forward to as much as the tours of these lost dungeons. Regardless, I can't wait to see where you take us next.
Glad you enjoyed the episode! :D When it comes to the story elements, they were initially intended to be there, but I decided to drop them last minute. I felt like Hengr's Crucible was creepy enough on its own without the story and easter eggs interfering. Don't worry though, SoaR will still have its story stuff in the future episodes. There might even be a separate series coming out at some point focusing entirely on that story... ;) Thanks for watching! :D/
As a suggestion for getting lost in the dungeons, and being unsure if you are going in circles...why not warp a second character down as well and use them as a landmark? You'd know for certain if it was a cut and paste or the same room that way.
It would not surprise me if they did later introduce "Hengr's Crucible" as content. The existing game leaves a lot of "no entry" type doors all over the place, it's not unreasonable to throw back content that was obliterated in 1.x. Like the easiest way to do something with this is to in fact make that Sea of Clouds the teleport entrance to the actual dungeon as a side-quest type dungeon. Even coming from a lore point of view, things get renamed when the previous place is moved, unreachable or damaged beyond repair. Like I was wandering around after your episode featuring the map, and it dawned on me that the Gry Abania tents look just like the pre-Sharlayan ship in the Peaks. What if these things are just place holders for lore content that they add later? Or maybe a lot of this lore was in fact done way back before even 1.0 came out and to keep lore-self consistent, they have to keep place names and geographical landmarks in the game?
There's actually a door in the Northeastern Dravanian Forelands that could easily serve as the entrance to the dungeon, if they were to bring it back in concept. It's not Coerthas, but they had no problems with heavy map rearrangement (a la Mun-Tuy cellars, Amaljina mines). It's also right there at the border between Coerthas and Dravania, so could work from a lore standpoint, if those cocoons had to do with dragons.
I don't think Hengr was ever supposed to be in the game. Why would she? She's an ancient legend. It's merely a geographical feature named after a myth. As for who's inside hengrs crucible? Probably heretics.
I don't know if it's just because you are really good at telling stories but why does 1.0 feel like it has more lore in it and exciting places to look at. I thought the sightseeing log would be something that would give background story on locations but it's like 1 or 2 sentences on stuff we already know. For example, no log for the underwater city in the Lochs. why? someone said its because it was mentioned in MSQ but I can't remember anything from there... so why not just put it in? There's many locations off into the wilderness in Eorzea that are so out of place but they are never explained or talked about and it genuinely upsets me.
1.0 had an Open World Dungeon system, where the dungeons didn't have exclusive instances. Instead, they would have to be located and entered. This meant that dungeons didn't have gear or level requirements, and could get VERY crowded at times as you were sharing the dungeon with the whole server. This is why the dungeons in 1.0 are so massive - they had to fit a lot of people! At launch, only a select few dungeons were open to players, with more dungeons planned to open over time through patches. After the game had launched, and failed, development focus shifted to repairing the game and only opening a few more dungeons. When 1.0 was shut down and reborn as ARR, a large number of dungeons in varying states of completion were left abandoned below Eorzea forever.

In most FF games, if the entire party gets petrified, you get a game over. We go in with a party for a good reason. :)
Would be cool if it meant that we either had to help her (hence the crucible) or to prevent someone from becoming/awakening her as a primal.

well crucible has a double meaning, it can mean something like a cauldron, or it could also mean a trial of sorts.
