This will be my secon time relocating, my family immigrated to Canada from Eastern Europe when I was 7 years old, I still remember life back in Europe and have visited my old home a few times. Howzit!! We are a Rhodie and a Saffa who moved to Canada in 1989 with our 2 kids. We usually go south to where the palm trees grow, but this year had to stay in Canada. Our son (Durban born) and our DIL bought a house in the Annapolis Valley so here we are. Experiencing a Canadian winter for the first time in 10 years! I am thinking that we may move from GTA, Ontario to NS in the near future. We love the slower pace. Looking forward to following your adventures.

We’re now close to retirement and want a more relaxed atmosphere and a sense of community. I’m not sure which area in NS would fit for us. We’d like a more country setting. Hi Nancy! Thank you so much for your message. NS is a lovely place to take things a little slower, but still have lots to do. Personally, we really love Mahone Bay and the Annapolis Valley. Hope you find a nice spot to settle!
I think some good places for you to check out would be in an area we call the valley. I would highly recommend Wolfville, Port Williams and Canning. They’re all in an area where there’s lots of apple and corn farms and at least three great vineyards. Also close to the Bay of Fundy.

Hi Aneesa! Yes, NS is a great place to live. The best thing to do is to check out the immigration section on canada.ca to see which stream you qualify for and take it from there. The website is packed with information and it's very clear as to the steps you need to follow and what documentation you will need. Good luck!

As we say here in Nova Scotia "Welcome home". I'm sorry to see Lunenburg was nearly a ghost town when you were there. In the summer normally you can barely walk though the down town for it is quite packed with tourists. Hopefully it will soon be again.

Patricia, not to scare you off but just to let you know that job hunting there is vicious. But that being said, i wouldn’t let that discourage you from going.
Lunenberg is a great town with great food , its also the home of Blue Nose , the sailing ship on the Canadian dime , Peggy's cove is a tourist trap, but still beautiful , the entire coast of NS is dotted with lighthouses not swarmed with tourists , and don't forget to visit Shag Harbor, the home of Canada's version of the Roswell incident , and Oak island where a treasure lies and is awaiting it's discovery by the Lagina brothers
Love this! I live in Hawaii and once had a calendar with the most beautiful scenery with the words “Nova Scotia” beneath it. Ever since then I’ve always dreamt of visiting! Also, great video! What camera are you using to film this? ♥️
The province is definitely beautiful! And for a small one, it actually has a lot to offer in terms of scenery which has been part of the fun of looking around. We're using a Fujifilm XT-2 with the 18-55mm lens (saving up for a nice 10-24mm or a prime!).
FYI we have bugs in Canada. In parts of Ontario we have black fly season, mosquitoes, horse flies, Wasps etc. That’s why we have screens on our windows.
Nova Scotia is beautiful, that is if you appreciate the maritime scenery and culture. I'm a scotch american from Connecticut who lives in Colorado, so it felt like home. But I only visited during the summer. Canada in winter is another animal.

Hey guys. Which city in SA would you compare it to? Hubby and I moved from PTA to Oregon, USA 4 years ago but we’re hoping to make the move North soon. All our friends are in Vancouver (and we love it there) but we feel that maybe a smaller city is where we would like to be. Any good beer and coffee? Have you found other Saffas there? There are a few hundred here in Portland and we get together for braais which makes it feel a bit more like home ❤️
Hi! We come from PE and it feels pretty similar to that with a Halifax being a bit more vibey/artsy (like Cape Town). LOTS of craft breweries and we're still on the hunt for coffee as good as Masterton's ;) More Saffas here in the Maritimes that we expected actually, but definitely more of us in BC as it's a bit warmer.

Hey Preshen! Yes, COVID has caused a lot of delays. We applied through Express Entry SMC. Jobs were a little harder to find than usual due to COVID, but we are on our feet now!
Okay, I wouldn't go running to book a flight just yet, as there are many, many negatives to life in NS too. We moved from BC, to PEI, then to NS. If we had known beforehand just how awful it is here, we'd have stayed in BC. Housing is inexpensive, but most of it is very old, and very poorly maintained: you get what you pay for. Work? If you want to be permanently impoverished, you couldn't find a better location to achieve that aim. Halifax is like Vancouver: insanely expensive, with ballooning social issues. The wind is always cold, even on nice days. Having lived in northern BC, I would say that the climate is similar. Apart from housing, it is far more expensive in NS than in BC and the price of food here is scandalous. If you're not from NS, don't kid yourself; you'll always be on the outside looking in; it's a tight knit community of those who were born here. They don't think it's cool that outsiders are flooding their province, jacking up the house prices. When we moved into our home in NS, the locals weren't exactly giving us a standing ovation. Seriously, people were just as friendly, and communities were just as tight knit, back in BC. Look at a map. Most of NS is peninsular, and heavily wooded, so access to beaches is limited relative to BC. It's not a simpler life, it's a prehistoric life. Get used to simple things taking much longer to be accomplished, and not having the same kind of access to things that are commonplace elsewhere. NS does have one thing going for it: it isn't PEI. PEI is populated with the highest concentration of stuffy pretentious people I have ever encountered in my life. They also have social issues galore, and the winters are an utter, windswept, hell.
That's a very complex question! The best thing to do when you start thinking about moving here is to check out the immigration programs on Canada.ca to see what you're eligible for and then decide if you are willing to commit to the process - good luck!
That really depends on what you want to study, but from a lifestyle point of view, Nova Scotia is very relaxed and outdoorsy! Halifax offers a fair amount of "city life" but is nowhere near what you would get from Toronto, for example. So it really depends if you like being close to the outdoors or prefer the city.

A large part of the old inhabitants of Nova Scotia are refugees from the American Revolution called United Empire Loyalists. They included a large number of African Americans and they have been there since the late 1700s.
No Canadian Road trip is complete without Tim Hortons! I don’t think I’ve ever driven anywhere outside the city without stopping at a Tim Hortons, it’s kind of like an unwritten Canadian law, “thou shall not go on any road trip without stopping at Tim Hortons!”....without my ice cap and Timbits, I can’t drive!

High taxes, big welfare province, extremely poor education, subpar healthcare, mediocre restaurants, crummy weather, not business friendly, weak workforce talent, depressed economy, and the list goes on. Stay away from Nova Scotia except for an outdoor adventure getaway which is still passed by the more charming state of Maine which is next door.
Not sure where you live, but I’ve lived in NS for 51 years and I’ve never been on welfare, I’ve owned my own business, I’ve otherwise been employed by wonderful companies who care about their employees, I was educated in the public school system as were my 3 siblings and together we have 5 Bachelor degrees, 2 master’s degree and a Ph.D on the way. I’m not sure how you judge “workforce talent” or depressed economy but that doesn’t describe HRM.
@@catherinebiermann295 I currently live in New York. The education for my kids in Nova Scotia was severely lacking, they weren’t being challenged at all. The work force is not highly driven, and finding employees with rich technical backgrounds are slim to none. Even if you did have the workforce, the local GDP isn’t that strong for sales. There are countless better options then Halifax for someone looking to advance themselves.

make sure to take the time to visit PEI and New Brunswick's Bay of Fundy shoreline , it's very different then on the NS side

Hey guys. Which city in SA would you compare it to? Hubby and I moved from PTA to Oregon, USA 4 years ago but we’re hoping to make the move North soon. All our friends are in Vancouver (and we love it there) but we feel that maybe a smaller city is where we would like to be. Any good beer and coffee? Have you found other Saffas there? There are a few hundred here in Portland and we get together for braais which makes it feel a bit more like home ❤️
Hi! We come from PE and it feels pretty similar to that with a Halifax being a bit more vibey/artsy (like Cape Town). LOTS of craft breweries and we're still on the hunt for coffee as good as Masterton's ;)
More Saffas here in the Maritimes that we expected actually, but definitely more of us in BC as it's a bit warmer.

Hey Preshen! Yes, COVID has caused a lot of delays. We applied through Express Entry SMC. Jobs were a little harder to find than usual due to COVID, but we are on our feet now!

Okay, I wouldn't go running to book a flight just yet, as there are many, many negatives to life in NS too. We moved from BC, to PEI, then to NS. If we had known beforehand just how awful it is here, we'd have stayed in BC. Housing is inexpensive, but most of it is very old, and very poorly maintained: you get what you pay for. Work? If you want to be permanently impoverished, you couldn't find a better location to achieve that aim. Halifax is like Vancouver: insanely expensive, with ballooning social issues. The wind is always cold, even on nice days. Having lived in northern BC, I would say that the climate is similar. Apart from housing, it is far more expensive in NS than in BC and the price of food here is scandalous. If you're not from NS, don't kid yourself; you'll always be on the outside looking in; it's a tight knit community of those who were born here. They don't think it's cool that outsiders are flooding their province, jacking up the house prices. When we moved into our home in NS, the locals weren't exactly giving us a standing ovation. Seriously, people were just as friendly, and communities were just as tight knit, back in BC. Look at a map. Most of NS is peninsular, and heavily wooded, so access to beaches is limited relative to BC. It's not a simpler life, it's a prehistoric life. Get used to simple things taking much longer to be accomplished, and not having the same kind of access to things that are commonplace elsewhere. NS does have one thing going for it: it isn't PEI. PEI is populated with the highest concentration of stuffy pretentious people I have ever encountered in my life. They also have social issues galore, and the winters are an utter, windswept, hell.

That really depends on what you want to study, but from a lifestyle point of view, Nova Scotia is very relaxed and outdoorsy! Halifax offers a fair amount of "city life" but is nowhere near what you would get from Toronto, for example. So it really depends if you like being close to the outdoors or prefer the city.

Not at all! In fact, it gets about 100 more days of sunshine than London. In our experience, it's actually sunny most of the time.

High taxes, big welfare province, extremely poor education, subpar healthcare, mediocre restaurants, crummy weather, not business friendly, weak workforce talent, depressed economy, and the list goes on. Stay away from Nova Scotia except for an outdoor adventure getaway which is still passed by the more charming state of Maine which is next door.
Not sure where you live, but I’ve lived in NS for 51 years and I’ve never been on welfare, I’ve owned my own business, I’ve otherwise been employed by wonderful companies who care about their employees, I was educated in the public school system as were my 3 siblings and together we have 5 Bachelor degrees, 2 master’s degree and a Ph.D on the way. I’m not sure how you judge “workforce talent” or depressed economy but that doesn’t describe HRM.
@@catherinebiermann295 I currently live in New York. The education for my kids in Nova Scotia was severely lacking, they weren’t being challenged at all. The work force is not highly driven, and finding employees with rich technical backgrounds are slim to none. Even if you did have the workforce, the local GDP isn’t that strong for sales. There are countless better options then Halifax for someone looking to advance themselves.
