I want to share with you an email I received the other day from a customer. HI roy, just thought that you would like to know that at last I have done my kitchen floor. I used 45cm x 45cm Stamford tiles, which were very heavy and awkward to handle from a wheelchair, and without your superspreader I would never had attempted it. I did two strips down the centre of the kitchen, from the door to the sink, and when that was dry, I worked from them and finished on the left, and then the right a few days later. The superspreader was fantastic and it was so easy to use, it made the whole job a pleasure apart from the weight of the tiles! The video on your website was an inspiration and I am so pleased with the result, all level as well! Not bad for a 72yr old woman amputee in a wheelchair. Sorry no photos will try to send you some from a friends phone. Thanks so much for taking the trouble of sending it all the way to England, hope you are well and happy, keep up the good work, thanks again, Shirley
Awwww the smile at the end. That lil old man was so cute!! I don't even need to tile a damn floor, just kinda ended up here but man he was so little and cute. Xxx
You guys have got it all wrong. This video was not to impress you but to show the weekend warrior how easy it is to achieve a professional result without having any tiling skills. This system along with the Superspreader really works and because I was explaining the process I have no desire to rush it. I’m sorry that you find it slow but I was talking to a different audience
Roy Southby I’m clamping my trowel onto a 2x4 beveled at 45degrees on both sides tomorrow. As for the rest of the system looks like a lot of work. But that board trick is A++
Hi Roy, with the amount of water needed to spread the glue it will shrink at the 'deep' spots and look like someone walked on the tiles in the morning. Clips are the way to go mate. Great video though, Audio is good with the quiet background.
I’ve never seen a large tiling job done so clean and efficiently as this!! That’s phenomenal work!! The right knowledge and the right tools make the job easier and done to perfection!
Correct but not always..New tecs leave the oldest behind and most of them don't want and don't need to improve the skills and follow..I am sure if you speak to him about the new distantions will laugh..using cross in this size distance is wrong also as someone above said..without back battering...any way, I put tiles more than 20 y and I always get the new infos, tec and " toys" cause it's needed nowadays..tile 1.80x90 or even more 2.4x120 that's on fashion now can't be installed with the old method.take care
Wow! That was literally the best demonstration of laying tile I've seen to date! It was neat, controlled, and easy to do with just one person and very professional. Your set up actually compensated for dips in the floor as well. Even if some of the mortar seeped out from under the straight edges, it would be automatically used by the adjoining tile! Cool! Also, as others have mentioned, you didn't put a single knee on the floor! I like the soap & water spray to form the caulk as well. Mr. Southby, great job!
You are the man, a master, clean work, uniform clean bright shoes, and an iron back, you could give some lessons to many of these tile masters an big mouth
Roy southby I really enjoyed this video every minute! the way you set up the tile shows me you have a great system to level the tile quiet well!! thanks for sharing with all of us who do this type of work!! a lot of people would rather die and take their secrets to the grave than share as well as you did! thank you sir! great job! may God give you a longer life so that you may continue to make more videos and continue to share with us! God bless you!!
My Dad still does Tile installation and he’s about your age maybe older. Respect for doing this type of labor at that age. I’m 27 and do Tile installation as well , been doing it for 10 years now. An honest days of work. Nothing easy about it especially if you do it for a living day in and day out.
This is the kinda guy that can do a hard Day's work ,then go out for a beer without having to wash his hands or change of clothes, so clean ! ,a clean worker is often a professional worker .great stuff old man ✌️😁
Great video. A few of the comments are unfair. Whether you are a DIY'er or professional the most important thing is the quality of the finish. Your method gets the job done in a clean and efficient manner. Floor laying has never been about speed, you only need to look at the quality of some commercial shop-fits to see the consequences of speed work. Thanks for posting this educational video
From this vid. It looks like the tiles are perfectly level in reference to the surrounding tiles and that is the biggest challenge on laying a floor. My thoughts are he did a fantastic job and his contraption seems to do the job well. Extremely impressed at how clean he works. It's so easy to be in a royal mess when doing a job this big.
Just wanted to give this tiling system a huge thumbs up. I bought it from Roy some time ago and ive used it to tile my kitchen and front/rear door areas so far. Im about to tackle my 6m x 6m lounge room and am extremely confident in doing so. So easy to use, i can take my time, its accurate and little or no mess. I cannot thank Roy enough, its really made my renovation that much simpler. I'd never tiled before using this and now i enjoy doing it, especially when i see the result!
Man, I had to see this video last year. I tiled over 800 sqft basements by myself. It has a hell job. I hate installing tiles. This looks like a very fast clean method. Thank you for this video. Subscribed. Best regards Mister Roy With love from Canada.
Old man Roy blows away every tile laying system I have seen on you tube. All you guys need to take a lesson from this guy. Any haters are just jealous that they didn't think of it first. You can simply back butter the tiles and set more firmly and even use a more sophisticated spacer leveling system if you like to add more durability. However, Old Roy has it down and is spot on!!! Good job Roy.
Jimmy, you obviously know nothing about tiling, because if you did you would not be endorsing this. I have been tiling for over 15 years and have never tiled like this, or seen anything like this. If one of the people on my crew did something like this they would be fired on the spot. Bad job Roy.
I think you say this only because Roy makes it look so easy. People look at this and say wow, I can do it myself at home and save thousands. I'm an engineer pal! Tile installers are a dime a dozen here in So Cal. We don't need special mud beds, floor prep and expensive analysis from guys that think they know everything and think that knowledge is worth thousands when in reality people can simply learn how to do things easily on social media. You say I've never done it myself??? I was a union journeyman mason, in civil engineering now a mechanical engineer in facilities management. You should be worried PAL!!!Put more out there Roy! Don't listen to the haters. I will be installing new Travertine flooring in my home using Roy's method. Don't need no high priced know it all tile guy!
Jimmy Niev if your such an engineer pal you would know what the industry standard is on foot Pounds per square inch! it’s called; “Coverage” and “mortar bed”. That tile is rated for ftppsi and using a v notch half inch trowel and no back butter = gravity will be the only thing holding that floor down. “Hollow” and uncoupled from the substrate. Tile mechanics aren’t a dime a dozen Maybe tile hacks in your state being that you’ve literally killed it with your bright liberal ass ideas! And the fact that you say no mud beds no floor prep tells me you are uneducated and NOT an engineer. You probably couldn’t engineer a dildo out of hotdog!
@@tilesetter929 You tile guys need to learn why trowels have notches - for even spread not for coverage. If you lay the cement perfectly flat you don't need notches at all. That is how people have done it before all those fancy new cement mixtures and adhesives. They just used sand and cement and they layed it perfectly. But during that time USA didn't even exist so keep your standarts for yourself.
NAPAKAGALING MO LOLO!!! (YOU'RE THE BEST GRANDPA!) Im a fan here in the Philippines... You have the best and easiest tutorial ive ever seen. Long live sir!!! I love you lolo!

Wow.... you have perfected your profession. I was really concerned about the tiling task ahead of me, until I watched the grand master Roy at work. A million thanks.
I have only ever heard of tile layers who could wear a white shirt and suit trousers to work without getting the clothes dirty. It may be that now I have watched one work, Roy. Well done.
The one thing I have to say about this is, finally, someone that knows the difference between "flat" and "level". You don't have to be level to lay large format tiles but you do have to be flat. you can have a 1/4" over 10' out of level, BUT if that area is flat, you are good to go.
This guy is a brilliant dude... would be great to work with him for a good season and pick up his craft....I have a feeling this is just the tip sliver of what this man has for talent
Great tip with the soap and the silicon. I didnt know that thanks Roy. And I just want to say Amazing work you, do a real pro. And I think the people that dislike this vid are insecure in their own work, yours is outstanding quality, you get my thumbs up.
These videos are for people who obviously don't have a trade in tiling and if you are a tiler and came here to give a thumbs down make your own video I thought this gentleman done a good job of explaining how someone with no experience can get some knowledge of how to do it for yourself and hopefully get a professional job with this technique after all if your are a qualified tiler you shouldn't need to come here to learn about tiling even some qualified people can't do it properly without stuffing it up Good video I can go away from here with a little bit more knowledge thank you.
I love this video, this is the most satisfying tiling video I've seen. I'm a messy tiler, this thing is brilliant. Saving a lot of waste on spilt bits....
You might think start up is slow, but he saved some time using the skis compared to floating the entire floor to prep it first. I'm no pro, but I worked in the tile biz to pay my way during my college years. This is a very clean and quality method. Consistently flat and level.
After watching this, I used your method while tiling my balcony this week. It saved a fair bit of time (not having to level the substrate perfectly) and I got a great result. The tiles are perfectly even - surprised myself. I had to make my own tool. Thanks! 😊
Personal opinion as a weekend warrior and diyer on a budget. This is hands down one of the best purchases I've made! We have large format rectified tile that we could not for the life of us lay without lippage, but we got this in the mail about a week ago and I cannot even begin to express how thrilled I am. They say that acceptable lippage is 1/32 or maybe about a credit card and I have to disagree - in my opinion there shouldn't be an "acceptable" lippage because it really is possible to avoid it. With this system (and a little pressure/wiggling) we've been able to achieve virtually no lippage. I have OCD (diagnosed) and we laid some tile 3 different times (and then yes, removed it) before stumbling on this video and I am so happy we did (my husband is probably far happier than I am that he doesn't have to remove any more tile or thinset from the tiles with muriatic acid). For all those asking/wondering about back buttering - we lifted about 10 tiles throughout day as we were laying the tile and we're getting at least 95% coverage. We'll have roughly 1800 sqft of tile done in about a week (we're not professionals and we're taking our time to ensure there's no lippage) and I am THRILLED with the outcome so far.
Clips and wedges is definitely not cheaper. This system was less than $50 I believe and clips and wedges for the sqft would far exceed that amount. Not to mention the time investment of clips and wedges vs this. To each their own, but I am please with how my tile turned out and the coverage we achieved.
@@megandawson5040 When you are on site with other trades around....with a deadline to meet.....this system is totally impractical. Once you get used to the clip/wedge system...back buttering as you go...you can cover an area quickly. On your own project it's fine....but with the industry under the litigation cloud you can't afford to mess about with gimmicks when you know if it goes wrong it's your wallet that's being emptied.... Good if it works.....but damn expensive if it doesn't....
As a professional tiler myself thats a very interesting and professional method! Self levelling compounds are what most tilers use on uneven floors now but this is a good old fashioned method probably a lot better than SLC.
@@LuisC89 Yeah big tile and especially porcelain are so easy to crack with the wrong subfloor its got to be perfect. Even if I lay a subfloor I will always screw the base floorboards down as well. A flat i tiled with Chinese folks down below they have a habit of drying all their wet clothes at the windows of every room in the flat and it turns out that over the year they were in it caused all the floorboards in the kitchen i tiled to warp and crack some of the tiles and all the floorboards were screwed down before i tiled it - you can never tell what disasters can happen! I should have put a subfloor in as well but i didnt want that nasty rise on the kitchen door entry point! 10 years and the tiles were perfect and then one year and a new set of idiot residents below and you have a disaster!
I watched many videos of installing tiles on the floor, what I have noticed was, no matter what method the tiller is using, somebody will still say "no that's not the right way to do it!" so for people commenting that this is wrong put your so called PERFECT WAY OF TILE INSTALLATION video here!!!! But I'm pretty sure someone will still say "No,that's not the right way to do it!"...
Hi Sheldz thank you for your comment. I have received many favorable comments but the tilers are the ones that condemn me. What I have done is invent a glue spreader and I’ve created a system to go with it to enable the handyman/woman to lay their own tiles with an absolute professional finish. My system works and I sell all over the world. I too am fed up with the idiots that want to knock it
Agree with you 100%. Can't stand people who just post negative comments. The guy is just trying to help FFS what is wrong with people? Just watched this video only problem is I've watched it after already laying my own floor tiles on an uneven floor lol. Managed to do it but after watching this I now know it could have been so much easier. Didn't even know those extendable spreaders existed but having seen this I know for future. Great video that I will refer back to for sure if I ever need to tile an uneven floor again
Thank you so very much Mate 👍😎🥰 May God Bless you !!! Long Live Roy with full of health happiness to you and your beloved family 🥰 Thank you for your precious time 😉😎👌
It's a bad idea because the tile is just laying on the bonding agent.. it's not keyed into the tile bonding it to the floor... pretty much building a house without nails. A nice floating tile floor.
Fantastic job Roy. No disrespect, but it's great to see an older gentleman who'd put a lot of younger ones to shame, myself included (not so young though) Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise sir, and I hope you are keeping well.
I gotta say this is a very smart technique. There are a few important things you left out but I will leave it at that don’t wanna get trolled. Very good work sir.
Hi to all thanks tor all your comments, some great and some bad. To all the bad ones I’d like to explain some facts. This video is intended for all the people that would dearly love to lay their own tiles but would not have a clue how to go about it. The system that I have created is foolproof and so easy to use. The Superspreader that I’ve created is also foolproof so even a child can use it with great success. With my system it is not necessary to use a self leveling compound which is expensive and requires a fair bit of skill. The weekend warrior is not interested in speed , just a professional finish and that is what will be achieved. The Superspreader is for sale online at my website diytilingtools.com
mwlnyc hi I bought them trom an aluminium supply store but most builders hardware stores have them 2 when I first invented the Superspreader I was able to cut the v notch by hand , it worked perfectly. But when I started to manufacture using laser technology I made some square notches which required skill to break down the notches and on the other hand the v notches accepted the adhesive more readily so I stayed with the v’s. The important thing is the adhesive is spread perfectly no matter who is spreading it
I see w problems the bond between the floor and the thinset and the bond between the tile and the thinset, I like to flat trowel the floor then run my notch to make sure it gets good bond with the concrete, I also back butter 100% of the tile before I set it to make sure I get good bond as well. Good idea but not sure if the bond would last with expansion ? But definitely would get you flat on an uneven floor.
Roy, I hope you don't let the idiot naysayers get to you. You've really come up with something great here and there is no way in high hell that a tile setter using traditional methods could install huge rectified tiles over an unprepared surface like this without lippage at anything like the speed you're showing here. Good work Roy! 👏👍
@@jeremyruss2407 I observed tile installers here in Quebec in one of the biggest mall.never saw one back buttering a single tile.so how they did it ?.one guy spreads the cement with a notched trowel and the other laying tiles just like Roy did.if they had to back butter tiles it would take them years to finish out giant mall that has corridors a few kilometers.it will be an insane job.so far I do not see Brocken tiles and our mall gets insanely big tragic and it is been 3 ,4 years already.besaically they were doing Roy's technic but a few guys doing it fast and efficient .I did by myself 800 square feet basement and started back buttering only when the floor was uneven or with some problems but where the floor was flat did exactly like Roy.so far my tiles look perfect.if I saw Roy's s method and instruments I would do it exactly like in his video.in Bulgaria some tilers do not back butter but they soak the tiles in a bucket of water for hours and then lay them down just like Roy did.they did my apartment in this way and I lived there for 20 years and no tile popped or had any defect .

Dunno how I got here but hey nearly 6 million views - Roy's an interweb legend. Good job Roy.
You might think start up is slow, but he saved some time using the skis compared to floating the entire floor to prep it first. I'm no pro, but I worked in the tile biz to pay my way during my college years. This is a very clean and quality method. Consistently flat and level.
J Browning thanks for your comment
After watching this, I used your method while tiling my balcony this week. It saved a fair bit of time (not having to level the substrate perfectly) and I got a great result. The tiles are perfectly even - surprised myself. I had to make my own tool. Thanks! 😊
RedRupert64 I’m glad you had a go. Pity you didn’t buy from me but I’m pleased just the same
RedRupert64
should make few degrees drop off house for rain water diversion.
Marti LPG: Thanks. Yes I did that - I allowed a 3% fall, which may sound a lot, but I'd rather too much than too little 😊
Wow the simplicity achieved is astonishing. He made that look so easy.
Next time....try clips and wedges.....much cheaper with same result and without any worry of weak spots under tiles.....
Good if it works.....but damn expensive if it doesn't....
like for the wistle
man I was trying to watch food videos and this popped up cant believe I watched the whole thing.. great job in dress shoes and super clean
What a pleasure watching a professional at work. Well done Sir!
The young dude did a good job, and no mess
Those are one hell of shiny clean pair of shoes for a tile laying worker... commended..
He takes pride in himself, and his work. I would hire him in a heartbeat if I could.
This man shoes clean asf... i love this
As a professional tiler myself thats a very interesting and professional method!
Self levelling compounds are what most tilers use on uneven floors now but this is a good old fashioned method probably a lot better than SLC.
I agree.. Specially for big tiles like this one
You are a saint for imparting us with such valuable information. Salute!!!
Glad to see new creative ways of dealing with the everpresent menace of uneven floors!
Qué tío!!! Es un máquina.
No se mancha ni los zapatos.
Es un gentelman de la albañilería.

What precision! I prefer to use older tradesmen overall. Experience is the best teacher.
Fantastic method Roy. I never thought of doing it this way, but that makes absolute sense the way you explain it!
I love this man. Strong. Skilled. Smart. Sweet
Thank you so very much Mate 👍😎🥰 May God Bless you !!! Long Live Roy with full of health happiness to you and your beloved family 🥰
Thank you for your precious time 😉😎👌
Oh Bite Me Matt!
Nice idea, but the tile floor will have lippage..Better is to set on leveling spacers tile system, much faster and less back pain..
Cleanest shoes I've ever seen a tile guy wear
Very good. We had a guy use a very similar technique on a floor and it's still Good eighteen years later.
Absolutely incredible to watch!
Whether or not tilers think this is a good idea, it's good to see someone thinking outside the box.👏👏👏👏👏👌
I like his ideas, slow but sure. Zero trial and error.
It's a bad idea because the tile is just laying on the bonding agent.. it's not keyed into the tile bonding it to the floor... pretty much building a house without nails.
A nice floating tile floor.
@@eriktarasyuk1552 then maybe not the best idea.
This guy is a legend.
Very nice work
This guy is Genius. This video help solve my problems.
What’s your problem?
Fantastic job Roy. No disrespect, but it's great to see an older gentleman who'd put a lot of younger ones to shame, myself included (not so young though) Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise sir, and I hope you are keeping well.
quackchung thanks for that I really appreciate it
Video from 2014 with 7 million views and you reply to comments, I doff my cap sir!
I think so.. be respect each other.
First i want to say I love your system, OMG... something simple but really effective. One 1 time GREAT JOB & thnx for sharing.
*Well done master you are a professional in your field.👍*
man this guy ill watch him work all day
uncle ni dah tua amat dah.. tp otai bisa yg amat.. hahaha great job bossku.. fantastic ideals. so pretty cool..regard from MALAYSIA.
What a brilliant edia, good job sir God bless
good on you sir you done a brilliant job and im stealing your tip about the detergent for the silicone .
Very good ,smart and clean skilled guy
I gotta say this is a very smart technique. There are a few important things you left out but I will leave it at that don’t wanna get trolled. Very good work sir.
you make it look so easy dude, Power to you..
Hi Roy, two quick questions - 1) where do you get that long straight edge channel? 2) why only v-shaped and not square notch?
mwlnyc hi I bought them trom an aluminium supply store but most builders hardware stores have them
2 when I first invented the Superspreader I was able to cut the v notch by hand , it worked perfectly.
Una gran ayuda para pisos a desnivel
Una golpeadita y niveladores es otro level 100 metro al dia
Buen aporte Maestro !!
Have no idea what this guy was doing i was just mesmerised by his whistling voice
By far the best method and illustration I've seen. Thank you sir!
Hello my uncle, I am from Algeria and have seen the way you work, very wonderful, I also do such works, but I am not a professional, and here in Algeria there is no novelty means to work well. Here's how to work in a tiring way. That's how you work here is different from how you work. I hope to learn from you new things
