  • In this video, I will take you to experience the Hutongs in Qianmen area in Beijing, China.
Qianmen Street is adjacent to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. This time my walking tour started in Dajiang Hutong, passed through the main street of Qianmen Street, and then arrived at Dashilan Hutong. There are many places to shop in Qianmen. What I like most is the snacks there. These are snacks from old Beijing. The whole street not only looks beautiful but also smells good because of the food.
The culture of Beijing's ancient capital is "Hutong culture." Beijing's Hutongs first originated in the Yuan Dynasty(AD1260), and there were more than 6,000 at most. There are generally courtyards on both sides of the Hutongs.
Hutongs all look similar from the outside, but their internal characteristics are different. They are not only the culture heritages of the city, but also the place where ordinary people in Beijing live. Beijingers have a special affection for hutongs.
Beijing Qianmen Dashilan Historical and Cultural District is located on the west side of Qianmen Street in Xicheng District, Beijing, bounded by South Xinhua Street in the west, Zhushikou West Street in the south, and Qianmen West Street in the north, covering an area of approximately 1.15 square kilometers. Dashilan was built in the 18th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (AD1420), and was called Langfang Si Tiao at the time. In the first year of Hongzhi in the Ming Dynasty (AD1488), a fence was set up at the entrance of the alley, so it was renamed "Dashilan"; it means big fence in Chinese. In the late Qing Dynasty, commerce developed here and a commercial district was formed.
The history of Dashilan can be traced back for more than 500 years. It retains the urban texture with the longest history in Beijing. It is also the area with the densest historical and cultural heritage of old Beijing. It is a mirror that reflects the historical development of Beijing.
