Lion's Back was closed in 2004, a few years before I moved to Moab after retireing, so this video has to be well over 18 years. I drove it in 2003 in a Jeep on a trip when living in TN. Really no where near as scary as it looks.
Jesus Christ. The brass balls that driver has. Stupidity always makes the most amazing videos. Thank god you didn't go flipping down like I've seen ones. Love this video.
If you want to see that, you should watch the old video of the K5 Blazer that loses control coming down (and survives). I'm sure it's on TH-cam somewhere.
That looks terrifying, even from the safety of my couch. From what I understand, they closed the Lion's Back to the public. Too many accidents/deaths. There's a milder, smaller version of it somewhere near by you can still go on thought.
@@tenmil1 Correct. That area is owned by the Nelson Family. They allowed folks for years until that Blazer footage. Closed right after that. It wasn't old man Nelson that closed it, it was his family. He liked it open, but the family's lawyers won of course.
@@tymesho I didn’t know any of the family names I just knew it was not on public lands. Thank you for filling me in, it sounds like you’ve been in the area for a while.
Tracks can be built for 4x4 use and 4x4s otherwise exist for the purpose of getting to otherwise inaccessible areas for a good reason, or at least doing so using a route that won't be damaged either physically or visually.
no there is a way up the back thats a few small versions of this, theres an almost flat bit inbetween the sections and the little ones are not near as steep.
@mhslacrosse69 - as far as I know it's closed now. The video was taken in 2006, and I still can't forget how scary it was. I've done it the first time in 2003 and it was even scarier .
Good question. It's on private property and this was done after the close - there isn't any rubber on the rock any more like when it was open. Maybe they poached it?
ahhh yes.....the view at the top is breathtaking. Especially when you're up there at night. To see the once sleepy town of Moab in the early 1990's from up there....and then to lay down your camping bag and sleep under the stars. That could be done then....not so sure about now. Unless the back way up is still accessible. Will have to do it again before somebody gets the bright idea of putting a Taco Bell at the top. ZUK
If you're the boss and telling whoever the driver is to drive that car for advertising purpose, you say: "dude, you gotta make it or else you're done!"
Oh my gosh!!! You actually got out of jeep??? I went up and down this before and I wouldn't dare to get out haha!!! Yes It was very scary for me, my heart kept pounding HARD!!!! Even my legs were shaky Haha!!! I haven't been back since 2005.....
@@jenniferarnold1837 Nice! Its on indian land and theres been talk of them opening it separate full time, maybe theres a chance! 👍 Super sketchy getting turned around at top!
There really haven't been that many crashes. And the ones that do usually are from the brakes failing after running it so many times. Or missing a gear and free wheeling. The first 20 feet were steep and turning around at the top was sketch, but the rest fairly mellow. The view and the risk it what makes it amazing. Stock vehicles did it.
Buddy and I did it one night drunker than a boatload of sailors on their first night in port. Yes, at night ! And if you think that was nuts, wait until you hear this... We did it in a 1963 Cadillac ! Word is if you look close, you can still see our turds scattered around in the rocks. We both lost 25 pounds that night !
BigBendBroncos Don't know if you've ever been to Moab but the traction is ridiculous. It's like driving on sandpaper, you notice he didn't so much as squeak a tire coming down. We drove my old junkheap Ramcharger from West Texas to Moab last year, wheeled for a week and had a blast. Wanted to go again this year but life keeps getting in the way.
Nice jeep looked like it creeped down it good they have pretty good hold back ik ours is a 95 jeep renegade and its been through about a little of all of different surfaces it still runs like new....cant beat a jeep :) IM A DIE HARD JEEP LOVER
It's my understanding Lions Back is officially closed. From the faintness of the tire tracks in the video, I can't help but wonder if they were in violation of it being closed. For those wondering, it was go up, turn around (with little room for this), then come down! As for how steep... it's slickrock... and even with gear reduction... sometimes tires failed to maintain grip which resulted in a horrific (and often dangerous) ride back down for some!
Slick rock is actually very grippy when dry. It makes a pretty ideal surface. It got its name from when it got wet. Most assuredly, the vast majority of failures were due to picking up too much speed or brake failure.
"Hey I got an idea!" "What is that?" "Let's drive a Jeep off a steep mountain and record it!" "Woah, what if you lose control, roll over and die?" "Who gives a shit, it'll be RIGHTEOUS!"
Best thing to do if you lose traction is to get on the gas so you can get a good launch off either side. Then gas it hard! while airborne then maybe you can land it! Haha. I would attempt after a good Rain and then it drys. Less loose sand on top of rock. I imagine that's what would be most likely to make you lose traction.
I think this is right, correct me if I'm wrong...somebody did a land deal recently and Lion's back is now restricted access. You won't be seeing any more of this more than likely. Too bad to loose it for wheeling, but then again some poor bastards in a Suburban came barreling down it, went over the edge and their memorial is at the bottom. Won the Darwin award.
It has been closed for a number of years. It has been private and there is a deal going on to build condos on the property. The video on youtube of a blazer barreling down it (the only one I have seen) is the one you are talking about. The couple involved walked away.

Thanks!!!! That was a long warm up.

Skip and Buffy arguing was the best part of the video.
I think Buffy made the best point. Skip was a of an ass. LoL
Did you ever see the vid where the chevy lost breaks & slipped a gear at the same time? pretty scarey with no one hurt bad.
That looks crazy--wouldn't wanna try that in the rain!
Low range, slow and steady. Piece of cake with a great view.
Was anyone else expecting to see him drive down full speed? 😂

It’s closed to public because it’s on private property. Always has been private property as far as I know.

Wait is it still open? I though it got closed down awhile back because people were wrecking?
I get that we know a vehicle will hold on this thing. It's still very ballsy to do this. My question is, who was the first to do this?
