fyi, they are close bc they’ve lived and worked together for 10 years, but it is also a lot more normal in korean culture for boys to show more physical affection. It’s called “skinship”.. personally, I find it to be close to how girls in the west behave with each other, like all of these moments would be very normal in my close knit group of girl-friends 😇

I think it depends where in the west you are because it's not that usual where I am, I know it seems to be more likely in the US, but yeah you have a very good point!!!! 💜

I like that you're actually trying to get understand it. Tbh when I first watched Kdrama I'd find it weird that people there like cute things and being very affectionate and adorable with each other and feeding and complementing each other which is rare in the male population, now I'm completely used to it and it became less weird. Also that kind of comfortability comes with the fact that they lived together for roughly a decade, so they've been in each other space a lot that they got kind of used to it. for example Yoongi (from BTS) wasn't actually like that (he still hates being touched but I think he secretly enjoys it on the inside lol) but after spending that much time with people like Jimin and V and Jhope who are very touch and clingy even he got a little comfortable with it.

Same. It felt awkward when they did that at first. And the fact that I’m from America (not the good places in America) doesn’t help. The men around me aren’t close like this but they aren’t homophobic ofc they just didn’t do it as much as korean men. So it was just awkward watching it

    You look uncomfortable
It's normal in the Korean culture for male friends to be touchy and close more than the west culture....and they already more than close they lived together for 10 years or more so it's normal for them.
Just don't pressure yourself to watch the touchy videos and try to watch something more enjoyable for you and you will get used to their behavior and culture by time.

    MR. POOP
I’m not gonna judge you for feeling ‘uncomfortable’ at first or when cringing a bit when it comes to boys getting touchy. Ik western culture is a bit different (compare to Korean culture) when it comes to boys being ‘touchy’ and close with each other, and it can sort of be like a “culture shock”. Like you said, you don’t like when ppl touch you, you like your personal space, which is completely understandable. Thank you for trying and for continuing to try to learn and understand:))) Just know that these boys lived together for 10 years and being close and touchy between boys is normal for Korean culture. You might get used to it over time the more you watch videos, and I believe that you can!! :D

  • @tavatavane6743

For me learning about skinship was a culture shock as a Brit, I hate being touched like I flinch, my family isn’t big on physical affection, although I’m more affectionate towards others but I don’t like it being reciprocated.
But I got used to it after watching eons of content. It’s similar to how western girls friendships are close & touchy. It’s odd for those who aren’t used to it, especially western countries where people are conditioned to believe any touch between the same sex = gay.
Now I don’t blink an eye, and find it even more weird when guys are so uptight around each other with arms length handshakes/shoulder taps. Other cultures spread love through touch more.

I’m exactly like you when it comes to affection, especially physical affection. My friends love to kiss me on the cheek and cuddle, but it secretly makes me uncomfortable. It’s normal for people in the beginning to feel a bit uncomfortable watching how close BTS are, and I’ve been there, but the more I got into BTS, I really started feeling jealous of their friendship. I think one of the reasons why I’m so attracted to BTS and love watching them is because they have the type of bond (not just physical, but also how much they care about each other and love each other) that I wish I had with someone, anyone

You don’t have to make yourself uncomfortable to “prove” you weren’t judging them or anything. It’s just normal to react that way when you see stuff you aren’t used to. This is differences between western culture and asian. In asian culture, being touchy between the same gender isn't weird. It shows how close you are with friends. We asians don't even think they are gay at all for hugging and kissing cheeks cuz that's totally normal to us. But, I know many western people weirded out by it. Fyi, they are not gay. I mean I'm not sure what their sexuality really is cuz they never announce it but they do like girls. A LOT 😂 so yeah it's just the different culture thing. They might not seem that masculine but who cares about being masculine if they are the best gentleman. Masculine isn't equal gentleman right? I'm pretty sure us girls like a good man than a tough one. Toxic masculinity isn't a flex at all. I rather marry a gentle man who hugs friends than a tough man who think being tough is a good thing and don't know how to give love.

  • @tasha5768

I think the reason you don't feel comfortable with touch that way is just that society is different here...it's just not considered that normal for most of us but I really wish it was like I just think it's a better way to be. TBH my best friend from school was big on hugging and I took me year to get used to it. Sometimes I'm even uncomfortable with family hugging me which is strange but I do really really like my own space, we're all different and that should be accepted.

Agreeing with others that its good on you for trying to understand or get used to something that makes you uncomfortable. I've had to do some of that with some of their behaviors also but honestly, prodding at those parts of your personality that don't like to be explored is how we grow as people and become more well- rounded. It's also how we unlearn harmful thoughts or behaviors we didn't even know we had.
Most people have very uncomfortable, ugly, or embarrassed moments exactly like yours, they just don't get posted to youtube

RM is the same way he is less affectionate and touchy touchy! But he has his moments. Like another commenter said, if you watch Kdaramas it was something I had to get used to. Men doing cute things or liking cute things that you would think only guys like. I thinking has a lot of do with the culture than anything. But what I think is, if everyone says you should be understanding or be okay their culture and that theirs doesn’t mean what you think it means. Then they should be okay with it not being your thing also, it goes both ways. In my opinion it really isn’t a big deal, people have to realize that there are parts of BTS the some fans won’t like or understand. Just because you don’t doesn’t mean you don’t like them or their music, some fans think you have to like everything they do or say and if you don’t then you aren’t a fan at all. That’s the part that people call toxic fandom, and the part that I don’t like.

As a person who has lived in Korea, the concept of Korean men being touchy is quite exaggerated from the media and stuff, but it is true that teenage guys are a lot more touchy. But I never see guys who are older than 20ish being touchy with each other. But then again, BTS lived together for years since they were very young, so it probably just became really normla for them to be like that. But srsly, I've noticed that actual Korean men in Korea were very different from what the media showed. They're not as touchy as what ppl think based on kpop and kdrama, and another stereotype is that men in Korea take care of their skin a lot, but that is also pretty far from the actual reality cuz the majority do nothing but wash their faces with water.

These instances exist in a much larger ecosystem of interactions between what are essentially family members, so seeing these interactions with no context will just seem odd. Many of these 'touchy-feely' moments are simply a form of rough-housing, minus the aggression. Such compilations wouldn't make much sense to watch when you barely know the group - not sure what the point of watching such videos might be for you. If you're not getting much value out of the experience, whether enjoyment, education, or something else, perhaps consider reacting to other material. Perhaps BTS isn't your cup of tea and you should feel free to leave that be.
