    The BMD website now shows what appears to be all the same DNxHR codec options as the full-size models. I like it.
    One of my users discovered (the HARD way) that the unit won't Record if you try to format the other SD card. (But no warning or error indication) Fortunately, the live-streaming service was also archiving the video.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      DNxHD/DNxHR were added shortly after this video was shot.
      I hadn't run into the format/record issue. But I haven't ever had to format a card while recording either.

    Hi Doug,
    A very helpful and informative presentation. I have just taken delivery of my HyperDeck Mini today. I am please to report that Blackmagic have updated the list ProRes codec's and include the ones you mentioned were missing in your video plus others.

      Yeah, BMD released the first firmware that added DNxHD and DNxHR as well as additional ProRes variants about two weeks after I published this video. I've since updated the description, but it didn't feel like it was worth it to re-shoot the entire thing.

      Hi Doug,
      I entirely agree with you. I've just run into a major issue with mine. It is no longer seeing the SDI video input so I will need to get a replacement given I've only had it for a few hours.

    I saw that BMD is stating that the "top model" Sandisk sd-memory card with 300 mb/sec is necessary. I tried the slower Sandisk Extreme PRO 95 mb/sec, and testet 8 recordings all tests lasted about 3 minutes. All the recordings was done without any sign of error and with steady red lights both on recorder-bottom and card - no flashing. When accessing the files afterwords, only the first 4 files was readable, the last 4 files showed but with only black and for some green screen. The recording mode was H.264 high, 1080p50. I am not saying that anything necessarily is wrong with the recorder (since 300 mb/sec card is the ones you should use according to BMD), but still it is scary that no fail is indicated while recording - and that fact that the first four files worked fine, but the last ones did not... New SD-card is in order... (expensive...). I see that others have problems with failed recordings, but I don´t see which card they are using.

    Hey, thanks for the video. A great feature of these shuttledeck is the fact that you can use them as a videoplayer via ftp on the atem television studio pro hd (all-in-one), not rack and panel video mixer. The last one has only a videoplayer for stills, so a great disappointment. This deck should solve this, giving opportunities to play-out into macros, animated lower thirds and stuff. This a salesrep from bmd demonstrated me on ibc, but I do not find any further information or tutorial. Ftp was the key in all this. Thx.

    I'm surprised their list doesn't at least have all the cards that are recommended for the Video Assist 4K. In classic Blackmagic fashion, the first VA firmware was incompatible with most cards, and they blamed the cards, but then the first firmware update fixed it. I think it's fine to just test a random card and if it records fine for 30m, I wouldn't worry about it.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quentin Smith Indeed. It is very odd that similar products perform differently.
      I did find in additional testing that a few cards I had tried but initially got the yellow warning light on did work once I reformatted the card. Their list is definitely not exhaustive.

    When the Aja Ki Pro recorders first came out they would stop recording on a dropped frame. I argued with their product manager 'til I was blue in the face, insisting that that is a terrible problem for live event recording. A year later, they included an option to continue recording even if there are dropped frames. The question is, would the dirt-cheap, Hyperdeck be capable of such an option?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sure hope BMD will address this. It isn't just a problem with their lower-end models in the HyperDeck series... it happens on the top-end versions as well.

    Hi! Just ordered the BMD HyperDeck Studio Mini and i'm now looking for the best SD-card to buy. What do you guys recommend? Also, how much space is needed? Is 64GB enough or should i go for the 128GB. In other words, how much space does an hour of recording need? Regards

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd suggest 128GB at a very minimum. Even the lowest bitrate codec (ProRes LT) takes up over 1 GB per minute at 1080p60. Ideally though for better quality you'd record in ProRes or DNxHD, at closer to 1.5-2 GB per minute for 1080p60.
      The two cards I've had really good luck with (for 1080p) are from Lexar (amzn.to/2j21220) and SanDisk (amzn.to/2j3KCpR). For Ultra HD you need a faster card; something like amzn.to/2j2Yz7q, amzn.to/2kuMqbY, or amzn.to/2BL3qy6. (These cards are also the ones recommended by BMD.)

    Out of interest, what situations outside of displaying to multiple screen arrays would you want 2+ recorders? Is it just for redundancy?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Redundancy is a great reason. But recording isolated feeds from each individual camera as well. Or feeds from computers. Or using them for playback of pre-recorded segments (or tape delay). I also usually also record a copy of one of the multiview feeds along with intercom audio so the director can review his performance after the fact.

    Hi Doug, I just saw that they announced H.264 support for the Hyperdeck mini. Could I use to directly transcode SDI signal from a camera to a H.264 file directly into the SD cards? I wanna skip using a computer for the transcoding process to save time, if it can be done real time it would be amazing.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that should work just fine. Encoding and recording is done in real time, just like the other formats it supports, and it has three different levels of compression to choose from. The one restriction they mentioned was that it doesn't support playback of files not created by the unit itself.
      The firmware update is supposed to be out in the next few weeks.

  • @dvanomaly420
    @dvanomaly420 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just had a thought. The new WebPresenter when used with the display has resync and essentially turns the device into a 2 channel clean switch. I wonder if because of the resync the program out would stay active, and provide a work around for your complaint about loosing a feed? What about the feed from an aux out on an ATEM? Does it also stop? Or a decimator scaler should do the same thing since it has the no signal overlay right (granted only 3g)?
    One would think this problem could be solved on the software side by recording a blank frame every cycle until the feed comes back into sync. Have you brought it to their attention/submitted a feature request?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The loss of feed pretty much only occurs on isolated camera feeds. I've never seen that happen on a program or aux out. But since I typically run 6+ cameras, that would be another $3000 investment and two additional rack spaces just to alleviate a software issue that BMD could fix very easily. And we don't even know that the WebPresenter works that way.

    • @dvanomaly420
      @dvanomaly420 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      doubledeej Indeed. and I agree it is something they should fix. One may also be able to write a script / program that interfaces with the recorder's api. Monitor for the dropouts and restart the recording automatically when it comes back online. Assuming that information is available over the api. At the very least I'm sure the record status is, and could try to restart at an interval.

    • @djp_video

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That depends on your needs. If you need to record 12G or Raw, the 12G version is your only option. If you want the extra controls offered by having extra buttons, the 12G is the way to go. If media cost is an issue, the recommended models of SSDs are a bit cheaper than the recommended SD cards. But if space in your rack is of primary concern, get the Mini.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The HyperDeck products are really picky about file playback. Not only do you have to get the codec right, and have to have the recording format set to match the format of the files, there are other settings that have to be set correctly too. I've also noticed that if the video format on the HyperDeck's input doesn't match the format of the files on a card that the files won't be available for playback.
      The ProRes formats seem to be a bit more forgiving, but it's still tricky.

      It records whatever video source you connect. So if you connect the Program feed, that's what it will record. If you have multiple recorders and connect each of your cameras to a separate HyperDeck you can record each source individually.

    I don’t understand what the difference between uktrastudio and HyperDeck. It seems that one has a USB “webcam” type of output ?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Ultrastudio products are computer interfaces which let you capture into or play back video from your computer -- they don't have any record feature of their own. You can then use video capture software to record it, or use it like a webcam, or stream it using software like OBS. The HyperDecks are recorders that let you record video and/or play it back from SSDs or SD cards, depending on model, and don't act as interfaces for computers.

    • @robinmordasiewicz
      @robinmordasiewicz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doug Johnson Productions thanks for the clarification.
      So if I was primarily interested in a playback decide for animated graphics and alpha channel lower thirds etc would I pick a hyperdeck ?
      I have an Atem mini and want to inject motion graphics and broll but the Atem only does static image.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Graphics are usually done live on a computer, but most of the time for productions involving this level of equipment we'll just use an HDMI output on a computer instead of going through a video interface device like an Ultrastudio. Not many pieces of software for creating graphics support the Ultrastudio and the similar Decklink devices.
      If you were to use the Hyperdeck, all of your graphics would have to be pre-rendered and the files be long enough to cover any potential use -- so if a graphic needed to be up on-screen for 30 seconds, the clip would need to be at least 30 seconds in length. And you'd have to be very careful about the video format used to render the graphics to make sure the Hyperdeck could play it. It'd be a very awkward way to go.
      If you need alpha channel support, only a handful of the Ultrastudio and Decklink cards can do it, and even fewer pieces of software support it with those devices, as it requires the use of multiple synchronized outputs: one for the fill (graphics), and one for the key (alpha channel). The classic Ultrastudio 4K, 4K Mini, and 4K Extreme models, or DeckLink Duo or Quad, coupled with CasparCG software are the only combinations that come to mind. The Hyperdeck Studio Mini does support alpha keying if you use the ProRes 4:4:4:4 format.

    • @robinmordasiewicz
      @robinmordasiewicz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doug Johnson Productions thanks for the good explanation. It seems like I need to get a small windows computer and run CasparCG to insert my animated graphics. I will be using the Atem mini and using chroma or Luma keying.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind that the ATEM Mini only has HDMI inputs, and the dual-output capability of the UltraStudio products is only SDI. Plus, you'll be using two inputs (one for fill, one for key). Since the ATEM Mini only has four inputs, you'd be using half of them just for the graphics, and have to use some SDI-to-HDMI converters to get the signal into it. A Television Studio HD, or even the older Television Studio, might make more sense.

      The only type of signal it accepts is SDI. So you'd need a converter like one of these:

      Wiistar Composite to SDI converter: amzn.to/2qTDGgC (have not used this one, but this wouldn't be my first choice)
      aCompatible CVBS to SDI COnverter: amzn.to/2qTxTaT (another I have not used)

    Doug or to anyone who can answer this. I am looking in to live streaming / live multi cam production. Currently looking at what equipment I would need for a full set up have been looking at BM equipment. One thing I can;t work out in general is can I do this wirelessly to the cameras? Is it possible to use a terradeck and connect that to the ATEM inputs to show all cameras feeds wirelessly?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wireless HD video is tricky. And expensive. The cheapest wireless option I've seen worthy of possible consideration is the IDX CW-1 (HDMI) or IDX CW-3 (SDI). (I have a CW-3 but don't use it very often.) They're pretty finicky, and you can really only use one at a time. And if you're using BMD or Sony cameras, you won't be able to do 1080p60 or 1080p50, as these "affordable" wireless systems don't support 3G-SDI Level B.
      Stepping up from there you can go to the Ghost Eye products from Cinegears, but even then you can usually only run two at a time and again I was never able to get them to work at 1080p60. I also did not have a good experience with their technical support crew trying to get things to work. (They kept insisting over and over that their products would work with my camera, and had me send the product to them at my expense for a firmware upgrade, which still did not work. And getting them to accept the return was painful.)
      Both of the above products have trouble reconnecting whenever there are signal dropouts. In both cases if the signal is lost at the receiver reconnect times can be up to a minute, or reconnecting may require power cycling the receiver. In the end I've decided it generally isn't worth the hassle in this segment of the market. If you need reliability you've got to step up market considerably.
      Above that level you get to the Teradek Bolt products. I personally haven't used them, but I have been on movie sets where they were used and they worked well enough. They claim you can get up to 11 systems to run simultaneously, but, again, I haven't tested that. I also can't tell if they'd work with Sony or BMD cameras at 1080p60; the information on their website is incomplete.
      I know that's not the answer you were hoping for, but that's about as good as I can do for you. Wireless isn't an area where I have much expertise.

    How are you getting audio to the deck if no audio is connected to it?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The audio comes in over SDI from the switcher. The microphone is connected directly to the main camera.

      doubledeej I'm trying to use XLR connection. Can I use the analong to SDI box you recommend in another post?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have an analog video source, yes you can use it to provide audio. That box does require line-level audio, so if you're coming from a microphone you'd either need a pre-amplifier or a mixer to bring the signal up to line level. But from there you'd just plug the audio into the box's audio inputs.

    Does the Power Ethernet POE+ Works with the Mac Ethernet slot for power ? Is the thernet Cable a special one?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      PoE and PoE+ deliver power to devices from Ethernet switches, but both devices must be designed to support the technology. So your switch has to support PoE, and your devices have to be plugged into a PoE port on that switch. The connected device also has to support PoE, which is not very common today. There are also limits on how much power can be delivered -- approximately 15W for PoE, and 25W for PoE+. Supported switches also have a limit on the total combined amount of power that can be delivered to all connected devices.
      No computers that I am aware of support it, either as a powered device or a power sourcing device. Most computers' power requirements are higher than PoE can provide, and rarely computers would be connected directly to piece of PoE gear. PoE is most commonly used to remotely power network devices like VoIP phones, Wireless Access Points, security or web cameras, etc. so AC power doesn't have to be run to those devices' location. Blackmagic Design chose to add PoE+ to their Teranex Mini devices, as well as the HyperDeck Studio Mini. Support for PoE in AV equipment is usually quite rare.
      It uses standard Ethernet cabling; any standard Ethernet cable should work fine.

    Why don't you just use OBS?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cost and reliability. When you look at the costs, having a computer (laptop) powerful enough to run OBS, plus a capture device, it's usually more money than a dedicated encoder.
      In terms of reliability, most of the time when I've heard of people having trouble with live streaming, it's due to issues with a software encoder -- not being able to capture the video correctly, or audio and video going out of sync, or dropping the stream right in the middle.
      In my years of experience, dedicated hardware is almost always better than a similar software solution.

    Is there anywhere you can see record times from 64GB cards?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't seen a chart, but maybe this will help...
      I record most everything in ProRes (normal, not the LT, Proxy or another variant). An hour of 1080p60 footage takes up about 120 GB. 4K would be twice that, 1080i or 1080p30 roughly half.
      I haven't experimented with the other formats enough to have any kind of feel for their sizes.

    1. how is the time code working? Free Run \ External ?
    2. if you connect two or more devices via reference, can they also record in sync with the same time code, frame accurate ?
    for Muti camera editing..

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It always records the timecode that is embedded in the SDI video signal. So if the cameras connected are synchronized you'll be able to do frame-accurate synchronization in editing. It does not generate its own timecode, or have a dedicated timecode input.

    • @EyalShilon
      @EyalShilon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there is no time code on the SDI signal, is it possible to sync all of them using reference, and the clips will all start as 00:00:00:00 but will be synchronized to each other?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reference signal is just used for synchronizing playback with a master sync signal. It isn't used while recording at all.

    Big issue: if you want to use the Mini Studio with an Broadcast Panel are all functions working OK: except the Recording Button. If you press Record the Screen turns to Black for up to 3 seconds. This time no picture on screen. In a Livestream production is this a disaster! BM know this problem and up to now no solution. This is using the Crowd for Field Test. Very unhappy & not to recoment to buy up an update of the software like in a lot of other products.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The blackout is only a problem if you are running your signal through the recorder instead of running the output of your switcher in parallel to the recorder and encoder. (Placing something in the signal path like that isn't recommended.)
      To clarify, though, it isn't the process of starting recording that takes a while, it's switching from playback mode to recording mode. If you're already in recording mode pressing the Record button does indeed start recording immediately with no delay.

    • @247tenerifetv
      @247tenerifetv 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks a lot for the answer - so far what you say its what happened except: we are coming in with the Cam Signal - out signal to the Studio 4K means not parallel! -we bought the Hyperdeck Mini for Livestream instant replay and here it not works like you confirm. There is nothing written on the BM Website
      as well not in the Manual. As well the delay is only when we are using the Broadcast panel. Using the Rec Button at the Mini directly starts without an delay! This in our Point of view a clearly programming problem by BM!
      In a normal "Hyperdeck" its working instantly as well from the Broadcast Panel so why not in the "Mini"? For us now: we have send the Mini back to the Company, we have to install during the next year another Live Studio but sure not a Blackmagic, to much updates. We, as an production Company want to work on production not on updates and solution where the BM Company not has done his work.

    • @djp_video

      The HDMI output does pass through an SDI source when it isn't in playback mode, but I haven't tested it to see how much of a lag there is on the pass-through, and I can't easily do that test now as my recorders are permanently mounted in my equipment rack with the HDMI outputs inaccessible. But if it's like the other HyperDeck products there will be little if any lag.
